Liverpool may need Jürgen Klopp U-turn and Sofyan Amrabat ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool have one major problem compared to Man City this season. Jürgen Klopp may need to pursue a dual fix on the pitch and in the transfer market.

Let’s hope this enables them to start dominating a vital defensive area of the pitch to the standard they were at last term. Yet if the tactical change was made with the intention of regaining control of zone five then the evidence suggests it failed. Perhaps, and in only two of the other 29 zones monitored by Opta have the Reds’ figures worsened by a wider margin. They’ve seen a drop of four per cent on the right but a mildly concerning eight per cent on the left. As much as Amrabat is a fine player, the Reds’ style of play markedly differs from that in which he has so richly enhanced his reputation. He has recently been quoted as saying he likes Atlético Madrid's style of play (there’s no accounting for taste) but his defensive action map in the above tweet illustrates that he thrives in a zone in which the Reds have lost a degree of control. Liverpool play in a far more front-foot style, and are hit in transition rather than deploying the low block that underdogs Morocco had to employ. They split the pitch into even smaller segments than your average coaching manual, so we’ll begin with a look at the section of this key defensive zone which is the width of the six-yard box. The field is theoretically divided into 18 zones, and 14 is the one which is deemed to be of significant value from an attacking perspective. What’s a regista, what’s he doing in the half space and is he going to generate any expected assists from there? While the Reds do not control that area of the pitch this term as well as they did last season, goal scoring hasn’t generally been an issue for them. Tactical and statistical analysis of football can get all-too easily bogged down in terms and jargon which a newcomer to the sport might struggle to understand these days.
