That's why some people would prefer to be rid of me." Among their findings were a lack of beds and no access to fresh air or exercise. "I'm determined to do whatever it takes," she went on. A spokesperson for the Home Office welcomed the report, and said officials "continue to work hard to resolve the current pressures at Manston as an urgent priority". She claimed "on my watch" the use of 30 new hotels had been agreed since 6 September and she had "worked hard to find alternative accommodation to relieve the pressure at Manston". Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said decision-making at the Home Office had "collapsed" on Ms Braverman's watch and asked how "anyone is supposed to have confidence" in her.
Ministers have deliberately neglected those seeking sanctuary. We need a fairer, more humane asylum system, says Refugee Council chief executive Enver ...
The new prime minister and immigration minister have a simple choice. The asylum system therefore is deliberately neglected and made worse in the hope that it will act as a deterrent. It is only this year that a decent IT system has been developed and is now being put in place. An asylum system that is built around those values would treat people with dignity and decency and not warehouse them in “wretched” conditions. But it takes at least a year from recruitment to training for a caseworker to be up to speed to do the job well. But there isn’t a deterrent effect and instead, regardless of the best efforts of hard-working government officials, we are left with a dysfunctional system that is far from fit for purpose. After inspecting reception arrangements in Dover late last year, Charlie Taylor, the chief inspector of prisons, [stated that](https://www.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmiprisons/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2021/12/Kent-detention-facilities-web-2021.pdf) “contingency planning should ensure there is an effective response to fluctuating numbers and rapid mobilisation of resources whenever necessary”. The number of people waiting for an initial decision on their asylum claim has been rising year on year since 2010 to more than We warned, and ministers were told, that it would happen again unless there was a rapid overhaul. Yet towards the end of last year officials told ministers to expect as many as [60,000 arrivals](https://news.sky.com/story/nearly-60-000-people-set-to-cross-english-channel-in-2022-as-home-office-agrees-234-000-spend-on-charter-boat-12557219) in 2022. So how can it be that people who fled persecution in Iran and Afghanistan or bloodshed in Syria are being detained for over a week, sleeping on floors and catching diseases such as scabies and diphtheria?

That, to me, is an unacceptable option,” she said in response to a question in Parliament. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is being challenged over his decision to appoint Braverman as Home Secretary since he gave her the job last week, but has stood by her. The site is only designed to hold 1,000 people, who are meant to stay for just 48 hours before being moved on, but there are currently around 4,000 migrants there. These are men, women and children fleeing war, persecution and conflict,” it said. It is only Opposition members who pretend otherwise,” she said. “Some 40,000 people have arrived on the south coast this year alone.

A similar plan is also on the cards in Denmark. What I have refused to do is to prematurely release thousands of people into local communities without having anywhere for them to stay," the minister added, insisting she had never ignored legal advice. The UK receives fewer asylum-seekers than many European nations, including France and Germany. He told MPs there had been cases of diphtheria and that “it’s a really dangerous situation”. But he claimed his boss's words reflected the scale of the challenge. Many of them facilitated by criminal gangs, some of them actual members of criminal gangs.

“No Home Secretary who was serious about public safety or national security would use highly inflammatory language on the day after a dangerous petrol bomb attack on a Dover initial processing centre,” she said. “Let’s stop pretending they are all refugees in distress, the whole country knows that is not true,” Braverman told parliament. Conditions at the site at Manston in Kent were last week described by Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration David Neal as “pretty wretched”.
Britain's interior minister is facing criticism for describing migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats as an “invasion.”
Britain’s government has announced a controversial plan to send people who arrive in small boats on a one-way journey to Rwanda — a plan it says will deter people from crossing the Channel and break the business model of smuggling gangs. But there has been a sharp increase in the number of people trying to cross the channel in dinghies and other small craft as alternative routes, such as stowing away on trucks, have become more difficult. Dozens have died, including 27 people in November 2021 when a packed smuggling boat capsized. Some families are sleeping in tents, and there have been cases of diphtheria and scabies. now need to look at some more radical options to ensure that our laws are appropriate, that economic migrants are returned swiftly and that we deter people from coming to the U.K.,” he told BBC Radio. Jenrick separately vowed “more radical” policies to counter illegal migration.

Nigel Farage, former leader of the Brexit Party and UKIP, said in a Twitter video Ms Braverman was right to use the word "invasion" and she had "the guts to say many of these people are just not refugees". He told the BBC's Newshour programme Ms Braverman's insistence that she had not blocked the use of hotels to ease overcrowding at Manston was "disingenuous" and the problem was made "right at the top of the Home Office". The home secretary told MPs on Monday that taxpayers face "a bill of £6.8m a day for hotel accommodation" for migrants. Charities criticised the use of the word "invasion", with the Refugee Council saying the language was "appalling, wrong and dangerous". Rishi Sunak has said the UK is a "compassionate" country, after the home secretary was criticised for saying southern England was facing an "invasion" of illegal migrants. But Mr Sunak's official spokesman said: "The home secretary was seeking to express the sheer scale of the challenge that faces the country, with people, including a significant proportion of economic migrants, seeking to make this journey."
Almost 40000 persons have crossed the English Channel in small boats this year, according to the BBC.

She had admitted to having mistakenly sent a sensitive official document from her personal email ID to a fellow MP. Capacity of Home Office systems 'not sufficient' to deal with asylum claims, warns Tory MP.
A Home Office source said Ms Braverman and her team were “working flat out” to bring down the backlog of asylum cases. “The home secretary and her ministers need to get this sorted out, and quickly. Most wanted to reach the UK because of ties with family or friends there, he said. It’s time the government ditched the rhetoric and adopted a kinder, more compassionate approach to age disputes.” “The children we have worked with have been placed in accommodation with adults they do not know, which is a scary situation for any minor to be left in,” she said. “Four local authorities have obtained injunctions to prevent the Home Office using hotels in their areas. It’s less than half the previous peak and France has double and Germany treble the numbers we do.” There shouldn’t be more than 1,200 people there and they shouldn’t be there for more than 48 hours.” I am told there is documentation inside the Home Office which would prove that.” And Mr Sunak’s official spokesperson declined to say whether the PM regarded it as appropriate. It was essentially humane and well organised until five weeks ago, then she arrived and it hit the buffers. Sir Roger welcomed measures to ease overcrowding, but added: “Thousands more need to be moved out.

Cleaning had started to take place in parts of the site, the sources added. A source close to the home secretary said she had been clear that “the information was not market sensitive as all the data was already in the public domain”. But she is allowed to use it in parliament?” “He is one of a lot of people who are becoming angry about immigration, and the numbers coming to the UK. “I do not accept or trust this home secretary’s word,” Gale said. Unlawful disclosure “is a serious offence in its own right”, she added.
The Conservative MP for Fareham is making headlines yet again over her comments about illegal migrants.
After being called to the Bar in 2005, with a focus on public law and judicial review, she served on the Attorney General’s Panel of Treasury Counsel between 2010 and 2015. She then studied Law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, then undertaking a Masters in Law at the Pantheon-Sorbonne University in Paris, before qualifying as a New York Attorney. Born in Harrow in 1980 and brought up in Wembley, Braverman is the daughter of nurse Uma and housing association worker Christie Fernandes, a couple of Indian origin who emigrated to Britain in the ’60s from Mauritius and Kenya, respectively.

Multiple officials have accused Braverman of making unlawful decisions when she decided to keep migrants at Manston. She spoke about the attack at an asylum processing centre in Dover, which ended up exposing the awful conditions migrants are subjected to in another centre – Manston – after many were transferred there. She barely mentioned the security breach for which she was forced to resign under Truss.

Data to the year ended March 2022 show a considerable year-on-year increase in asylum claims generally and in small boat arrivals for the quarterly period. A total of 75,764 visas were issued in the last year under the Hong Kong scheme for British nationals. In June, a total of 122,213 people were awaiting an initial decision on their asylum applications. The UK received eight asylum applicants for every 10,000 people across the country in 2020/21, the figures show. The number of asylum claims in 2021 was below 60,000 – well below the peaks of more than 80,000 of the early 2000s when there were conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and the former Yugoslavia. But if instead she is referring to the number of people coming, we can compare the figures to other countries and see that the numbers coming in to the UK are relatively manageable.”

By demonising asylum seekers and forcing them into overcrowded facilities, she has curated an optic of chaos.
“We’re not asking for something impossible,” said the Iraqi refugee Bahir, “we’re just asking for human rights.” A home secretary who sees a displacement crisis as an “invasion” is a policymaker living in a fiction.
