We look ahead to UFC 280 with some predictions for the fights including Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev and Petr Yan vs Sean O'Malley.

I believe he’s destined for the top and will grind his way to the biggest victory of his UFC career on Saturday night. The 33-year-old is a veteran of the 125lb landscape heading into the 16th fight of her lengthy UFC career – but Chookagian has only challenged for UFC gold on one occasion previously. He’ll need to be careful on the mat though with O’Malley an accomplished jiu-jitsu brown belt despite rarely relying on his grappling over the course of his UFC career to date. Yan’s boxing might well be the most polished attribute of his skillset but he remains one of the most well-rounded fighters in the promotion and could look to utilise takedowns in order to negate O’Malley’s physical advantage. A black belt under the tutelage of his coach and former UFC champion Matt Serra, Sterling is an opportunist who uses his athleticism to take advantage of chaotic scrambles for position. However, I believe experience could be the key to success at UFC 280 with Oliveira by far the more battle-tested of the two men having fought against the best of the best for a number of years now. Also a talented grappler – albeit Division III, not the same calibre as Dillashaw – Sterling has found his success in the UFC thanks to an uncanny ability to find a way to his opponent’s back. [TJ Dillashaw](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/tj-dillashaw) is the perfect opponent to test him given the credentials of his challenger on Saturday night. To state the obvious, this fight will be won and lost in the battle for supremacy on the ground; if Makhachev is as good as those in his corner have relentlessly claimed, he should be able to control Oliveira from top position and inflict some serious damage on a man who cuts notoriously easily. His ability to control the contest on the ground will be tested to its limits against Oliveira however, with the 33-year-old Brazilian the most prolific submission artist in UFC history with 16 finishes to his name. Of the two, I actually think it’s possible Rosa has a wrestling advantage as well and can earn top control time. Plus, Lansberg has been TKO’d a couple times in the UFC and I don’t think it’s impossible Rosa could hurt her at some point as well. Dillashaw can be found at +150 or better on other books in the industry, which is not a bad line in my opinion. Rosa, on the other side, has proven to be one of the highest volume strikers in the entire division. Dillashaw on the other side might charge at him like a maniac and try to knock him out. Sterling is a very effective submission grappler and specializes in the back-take specifically. Sterling will carry a four-inch reach advantage, and I didn’t like some of the things I saw in Dillashaw’s last win against Cory Sandhagen. Oliveira will very likely be dependent on a finish, and I don’t think targeting his inside-the-distance line at +195 is a terrible idea. Oliveira is the one of the two who’s been dropped a bunch recently, in part because he’s overly aggressive and leaves defensive openings. On paper, Oliveira has the submission grappling pedigree to survive a wrestling attack. He’s simply putting everything together and is a joy to watch. He’s extremely aggressive on the feet, and a dangerous finisher.

Omargadzhiev has youth on his side and shown to be better at getting the fight to the ground than his opponent in their Octagon careers thus far. Zane Simon: The thing with Krylov is that most of the time he has to have a significant wrestling advantage to win fights. Standing, Krylov can be violent and surprising, but usually just in short bursts on his way inside, and often with a lot of mess and a lack of defense. We’ve seen a small sample size, but I think Fiorot poses as much as a threat as some of the women who were able to outlast and outpoint Chookagian. Zane Simon: If I had to guess here, my bet would be that Dariush starts this fight with a really good blitzing round of offense, both men find success in the scramble come round 2, and Gamrot really makes his gas tank count in round 3 to close out the fight. She’s got the size and strength to trouble Chookagian, but her ability to finish fights has still been dictated much more by volume and persistence than it has one-shot power, and few fighters trade in volume and persistence like Chookagian does. The method I’m testing with these picks is all about win percentage, though, and due to Oliveira’s wobbles earlier on in his career (which I think are more of a benefit than a detriment to who he is as a fighter) it will be Makhachev who gets the pick here. I think injuries and matchmaking may have conspired to close the window on Dariush’s chances of achieving more than he has to date. Beneil Dariush, though more tested in the UFC, has four losses and a draw on his record. As dangerous and technical a grappler as Oliveira is, his willingness to give up position means that confident takedown artists who can survive in his guard, tend to get all the time they want there. For all the Khabib comparisons and talk about smeshing people, Makhachev is actually far more patient and more methodical in his approach than his teammate, especially on the ground. Anton Tabuena: I think this is one of the most intriguing title fights in a long time, with two insane win streaks, and two of the most technical and well rounded fighters right now.

After serving a two-year suspension following a positive test for recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), he returned in July 2021 for a fight with Cory Sandhagen at the UFC Apex — with limited fans in attendance. Dillashaw isn’t quite sure what to expect when he makes the walk to the cage on Saturday against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.

There may be a temptation to bet on Sterling to submit Dillashaw at +500, but the former champion has never been submitted in his MMA career. He'll likely make it to the final bell but will have to watch as Sterling has his hand raised in victory. Sterling isn’t a refined striker by any means, but his purpose for striking is to ensure his opponent's hands are always moving and remain open for the takedown. Dillashaw may be a better striker, but Sterling perhaps has the most underrated grappling in the UFC. Dillashaw has won the title on two occasions: a stunning upset against Renan Barao in 2015 and a stoppage of rival Cody Garbrandt in 2017. Aljamain Sterling may be one of the most disrespected champions on the roster.

Yan has the patience to avoid recklessness and the power to make O'Malley wither. And provided he can hurt Yan enough early to try and activate the former champion's desperate want to avoid a three-fight losing skid, O'Malley just might be able to line him up with the type of explosion which could end the fight. On the ground Makhachev might be able to maul the Brazilian, but he has to be careful for every second to not get caught in a submission. Yan Expect Sterling and Dillashaw to play for points before Sterling eventually gets the takedown and takes over. Yan vs. Perhaps Makhachev presents the answer in the form of a strategic takedown game and stifling top control. Oliveira Oliveira vs. Sterling vs. Dillashaw is back after a year away because of injury and also not too far away from a two-year drug suspension that cost him the title. Elsewhere on the card, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling looks to continue his incredible run when he takes on former champ TJ Dillashaw in the co-main event.

I projected this lightweight fight to end inside the distance 76% of the time (-311 implied) compared to a divisional average of 51%. I would want +179 (35.8% implied) or better to back “Do Bronx” at a 2% edge compared to my projection. 90% of Oliveira’s career fights, including 17 of his past 18 and 10 of the 11 wins on his current streak, have ended inside the distance. I would bet Rosa here, up to about -369 (78.7% implied) at a 2% edge compared to my number. 1 contender to face the winner of Makhachev and Oliveira. He hasn’t fought anyone near this level of competition and may struggle to make the proper adjustments. Chookagian has all the tools to keep this fight competitive and potentially win it. He should have a clear grappling advantage against Muradov, and I expect him to have success landing takedowns. Oezdemir has gotten wobbled more easily in recent fights, so I suspect Krylov may find a chance to finish on the feet against a fighter who is incredibly difficult to take down.
