As the Conservative party bosses have already laid down that the next British Prime Minister will be chosen within a week, there are reports that the general rules governing the selection of the new leader of the party may be changed to keep out ordinary party members from voting. She was not a member of the short-lived Liz Truss cabinet and is said to be much more right-wing than the former PM. Speculation is that the party leadership will set the bar high, meaning candidates have to get the support of for example 100 party members before they can contest. Many in Britain believe it is time for general elections, instead of the musical chair that has been on since Boris Johnson was forced out of office.

In the last 12 years, three ‘once in a century’ events have occurred, from the global financial crisis to the pandemic and the Ukraine war. There is a genuine question about the UK’s direction of travel. Truss brought in a new Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, who reversed two-thirds of the earlier measures and announced there’d be further spending cuts and/or tax increases to balance the books. Earlier, Truss claimed tax cuts could be paid for from the £30 billion headroom Sunak had left himself in the spring — but because of the Ukraine crisis, that had turned into a shortfall. [Truss](/topic/truss)introduced a ‘mini-budget’ — in the short term, to protect households and businesses from higher wholesale gas costs, a cap on retail prices was established, essentially subsidising them. She campaigned on a libertarian philosophy of cutting taxes, claiming that would stimulate growth, even obviating the need to cut government spending alongside.

The problems for Mr Sunak in the leadership race contrasted with his swift rise through the Conservative Party, which began in 2015 when he was elected to parliament having previously worked for Goldman Sachs and hedge fund TCI. For his supporters in the party, Sunak’s previous leadership campaign message of the need for economic prudence to address Britain’s rampant inflation and criticism of Ms Truss’ “fairy tale” plans have shown he is right man for the job.

Britain's Prime Minister Liz Truss's resignation after 44 catastrophic days in office has triggered a new race for the leadership of the Conservative party.

To speed up the process, if there is a members’ vote, it will likely be carried out online. But there may be heavy pressure on the runner-up from the MPs’ balloting to drop out of the race, senior party figures said. By Tuesday evening, there were further unprecedented scenes in parliament over a vote on a resumption of fracking to which Truss had given the green light despite widespread opposition among Conservative MPs and the public at large. Another potential candidate is Penny Mordaunt who was knocked out of the last leadership race. Whittaker said, “I am f**king furious and I don’t give a f**k anymore.” Later, the same night, the two were said to have ‘Un-resigned’. I recognise, though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party,” she said.

With Liz Truss out, contenders face a Monday deadline to get the backing of at least 100 Conservative Party lawmakers.

If there is more than one, the hopefuls will be whittled down before the final two are put forward to the 170,000 members of the Conservative Party. Many at the time speculated it could be a ” the Financial Times In 2019, Johnson helped his party to a whopping great win in the general election. But her “PM4PM” supporters are seeking to change that, pointing out that she polls better with the all-important Conservative Party members than Sunak. They point out that during the last contest his candidacy received the most support from his colleagues and say that many of his economic ideas turned out to be prescient. It’s possible that, given the high bar, only one candidate will be put forward by Monday at 2 p.m., which is when the nominations close. His time in office was marked by scandal after scandal and voters and his own colleagues were upset by his refusal to accept accountability. It is not certain if anyone else could galvanize the population to the same extent — or if Johnson himself even still can. The Telegraph, the Sun and the Daily Express all put on Johnson for their front page, while the left-leaning Mirror just called for a general election “now” in enormous print. Or might someone else emerge as the leading hopeful to become the next Conservative Party leader? Or Penny Mordaunt, who is not widely known but polls well with the Conservative Party members?
