Mr Johnson is said to believe it would be 'in the national interest' for him to run again.

The Tory MP, who described himself as someone who had strongly supported the former prime minister in the past, told Sky News: “I just think it’s too soon. So a mandate from people in the last general election, a mandate from party members and somebody actually who can get this party going again, get us winning elections again. “Good luck to Boris. He is currently on holiday in the Caribbean with his wife Carrie. Polling of Tory members released on Wednesday found that nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) want Mr Johnson to take over. The former Prime Minister is said to be “taking soundings” on whether to run again, according to The Times.

As Tories prepare to elect next leader, here are the MPs who have not ruled out running.

[firing politely worded shots](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/04/kwasi-kwarteng-fiscal-plan-date-thrown-into-confusion) at Truss from the sidelines at the Conservative conference, the idea of him becoming prime minister would have seemed ludicrous – and to some colleagues it still does. To Shapps’ advantage, he is seen as a steady ministerial hand, a decent media communicator and an ideological pragmatist. [chose Liz Truss](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/05/liz-truss-wins-tory-leadership-race-to-become-britains-next-pm) to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, the party’s MPs – and, in some way, the members again – will [select a successor](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/20/liz-truss-to-quit-as-prime-minister) to Truss in an accelerated week-long contest. But Braverman’s brief stint as home secretary is likely to have burnished her credentials with the Tory right. Are enough MPs on her ideological wavelength and willing to take another punt on someone with robust rightwing views? She could be awful. She could be brilliant. However, it remains to be seen if he wants to stand, and if he does, he may be seen as too niche a choice to even be a unity candidate. He came a fairly distant fourth in the 2019 Tory leadership contest and did not even stand in the summer, but he has a long ministerial pedigree, serving on the frontbench for a decade, including stints as chancellor, home secretary and health secretary. Her prospects, however, seem relatively slim. Here are some of the contenders who could stand. She dropped out of the race after failing to win the support of enough MPs and endorsed Truss, with her supporters moving the same way in a big boost for Truss’ campaign. Braverman has made all the right noises when it comes to pleasing the right of the Conservative party, while alienating centrists in the process. Only this week she bashed the “Guardian-reading, tofu-eating wokerati,” and a hardline stance on migration was seen as helping to put the brakes on a coveted U.K. She pointedly opposes gender-neutral toilets in public buildings, and, as trade secretary, has argued that the U.K. There’s nothing to stop a return to Downing Street for a former prime minister, but a comeback could be limited by the new rules. MPs and activists loyal to Johnson swiftly accused Sunak of putting his ambitions before the country. In what would be an astonishing twist in the long-running Tory psychodrama, a host of U.K. Treasury could allow him to offer a steady hand on the tiller. Though in the end Badenoch came a distant fourth in voting among MPs, she has won admirers from the party’s right wing for railing against so-called ‘woke’ culture. Former Cabinet minister and chief cheerleader Nadine Dorries has been gunning for his return, while fellow Tory MP Paul Bristow told Sky News Thursday the message from his constituents was clear: “Bring back Boris.” Sunak remains controversial with Tory members, however. The colorful Brexiteer needs little introduction.
