Alexia Putellas Becomes First Spanish-Born Player To Win Ballon D ... (Forbes)

FC Barcelona's Alexia Putellas has become the first woman in history to win the coveted Ballon D'Or award on two occasions. Having won the award last year, ...

Last year, Putellas was the overwhelming winner of the prize, accumulating more than double the points of Jenni Hermoso in second place. It was not awarded in 2020 due to the postponement of top level soccer throughout Europe due to the Covid pandemic. The subsequent operation and rehabilitation means Putellas will be out of the game for up to a year meaning she will miss the majority of the current season. In June she became the first woman from her country to make 100 international appearances. The award comes in spite of Putellas being injured since July and unlikely to play again for the coming months. Nonetheless, Putellas finished as the competition's top scorer with eleven goals in ten appearances, a remarkable achievement for a midfielder, scoring in the quarter-final, semi-final and final.

Putellas earned the nickname La Reina – the queen. Across the world, too, represented by her second consecutive Ballon d’Or. “I was able to fulfil the dream of any Barca fan.” Putellas finished as the competition’s top goalscorer with 11 and took home the player of the tournament award, followed by the Uefa player of the year in August. “The most special moment was without doubt playing the two games at Camp Nou,” said Putellas.

Beth Mead unlucky not to dethrone Alexia Putellas and win Ballon d'Or (The Guardian)

Putellas may be the better player, but Mead's individual heroics deserved recognition.

The Ballon d’Or is not an award for the best player but the player deemed to have performed best over the previous season. In my mind, Mead edged Putellas for the various individual player of the year awards based on last season but Putellas is, broadly, the better player. Some have questioned the quality of the Spanish league in criticism of Putellas’s win over Mead potentially being based on a lack domestic success, but that is unfair. She beat England’s and Arsenal’s Beth Mead to the award she won by a landslide last year, but it is believed the voting was much tighter. Is she the best player on the planet? “I think we have to talk about it, but also that today is not the day.
