“You have the best team in the world and you put in the best striker on the market, no matter what it costs, you just do it. In the past few seasons, this has traditionally been a clash of the league’s top two teams. I know City will not like it, nobody will like it, you’ve asked the question, but you know the answer. The problem v City is if you close him down with too many players it opens space for other world-class players." Nobody can compete with City in that. Reigning champions City have started the season well and are unbeaten so far.

When West Ham come to Anfield on Wednesday, the performance and end result will be a good barometer of whether the Reds have truly returned. Either Anfield's atmosphere is a myth, or it plays a major part — perhaps with refereeing decisions (though clearly not this one, which was clear-cut) or in other ways. Guardiola on the disallowed goal: "The referee came to the coaches and said play on, play on. Against the best team in the world it is incredibly hard, but we deserved the three points with an incredible performance. Haaland had scored in each of his last 10 games in all competitions. [Report: Liverpool 1-0 Man City](/soccer/match?gameId=637924) LIVERPOOL, England -- Liverpool beat Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday, a result that was more notable, perhaps, for who scored than who didn't.
Pep Guardiola said he was targeted by coins thrown from the stands during Manchester City's 1-0 defeat at Liverpool.
After the goal was scored it was the real Anfield; that's normal." "It is the clearest foul I ever saw in front of the linesman, and he [referee] is not bothered. "I lost it and I apologise -- in the end, probably deserved, but you cannot have this situation." They try it again next year. [Mohamed Salah](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/173896/Mohamed-Salah)'s 76th-minute goal -- his ninth in 16 games against City -- was enough to win the game for the home side, who saw manager Jurgen Klopp sent off for berating an assistant referee. "Next they will do it better," he said.
Was Gary Neville or Jamie Carragher right in dispute over Manchester City system? Carra says Liverpools defence was key to stopping Kevin De Bruyne; ...
They had a man short on that side, which, I think, left De Bruyne slightly isolated in that channel. "They only had De Bruyne and Cancelo on that [right] side. "De Bruyne had no player outside on that final line. Carragher: They didn't play with a back five with the ball, they didn't!! [But] the space for De Bruyne is always created when Cancelo [is slightly behind him and wide] and another player [is out wide, in front of Cancelo]. "Haaland doesn't score and the other one was the disallowed goal - a brilliant pass.
Manchester City's team bus has taken some damage on the short journey back from Liverpool to the Etihad.
On the pitch, a Mo Salah goal was enough to reinvigorate Liverpool's campaign in the Premier League after a stuttering start as they inflicted City's first defeat of the season in all competitions. And at the end of another day where neither side could claim the moral high ground, City's bus was pelted again as it made its way down Anfield Road with subsequent inspection showing a crack in the windscreen. Jurgen Klopp insisted he had not seen any coins thrown, while [Guardiola sarcastically said](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/what-pep-guardiola-said-anfield-25277980) that the fans showed less accuracy than when the City bus was attacked in 2018.
Manchester City will not face sanctions for fans chanting during Sunday's defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, sources have told ESPN.
If Guardiola was attacked by individuals throwing coins, it will be a matter for Liverpool and Merseyside Police to address. ESPN has also been told that City's claims of coin-throwing at Guardiola and of their team bus being attacked by objects after the game are likely to be outside of FA jurisdiction. [allegations of Liverpool fans throwing coins](/soccer/manchester-city-engman_city/story/4772552/man-city-pep-guardiola-targeted-by-liverpool-coin-throwing-they-missed-me) at City boss Pep Guardiola and of away team bus being attacked by objects after the game are also likely to be outside of FA jurisdiction.
Manchester City are awaiting further information from Merseyside Police before deciding on a potential investigation into chants from their supporters ...
Their coach had been damaged by Liverpool fans throwing bottles ahead of their Champions League defeat at the stadium in 2018. "We know the impact such behaviour has on the families, survivors and all those associated with such disasters. The concourse in the away section was also vandalised with graffiti of a similar nature. City have said they identified the offenders and handed down "significant bans". However, City have yet to call out the behaviour of their supporters publicly with a statement and the ECHO understands Etihad staff have now indicated they are awaiting the findings from both the police and their own security officers in attendance at Anfield before choosing their next steps. Those slurs have long been associated with being in reference to Hillsborough and Heysel and staff at Anfield were also forced to deal with graffiti and vandalism on the concourses of the away end at full time that made similar remarks.
The FA will open a wide-ranging investigation into events that marred Liverpool's win over Manchester City at Anfield.
We have also been made aware of an allegation that a Manchester City team coach was damaged. Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are working with both clubs to identify and bring to justice anyone found responsible for committing offensive and disorderly behaviour.” It has jurisdiction to take action only over discriminatory chanting and its investigation will consider whether that was the case on Sunday. City are expected to complain to the FA after their team bus was attacked as it departed Anfield. A City supporters’ bus was also attacked by Liverpool fans in 2014. It is also looking into allegations of coin-throwing and offensive chanting during
LONDON (AP) — As the Manchester City team bus made its way out of Anfield, there came a parting shot.
The governing body will review the incident before deciding whether to offer him a ban and/or a fine. Raheem Sterling’s transfer to City in 2015 pointed to a shift in the balance of power from one of European soccer's traditional giants to its newly-enriched rival, which was bought by the Abu Dhabi royal family in 2008. A person with knowledge of the bus incident said City will make an official complaint to the English Football Association. It has limited jurisdiction over isolated incidents of objects being thrown from the crowd from individuals. The coin-throwing and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match comments will also be included in the complaint, the person said. City manager Pep Guardiola had already successfully avoided coins being hurled in his direction during the match.
John Aldridge discusses Liverpool's win over Manchester City and the unsavoury chants at Anfield in part one of his weekly column.
[Manchester City supporters soured the occasion once again with their disgusting chants in relation to Hillsborough and Heysel](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-awaiting-further-information-25283383). Would those City fans do the same with Liverpool fans around? I feel for the families of those connected to Hillsborough, who have to listen to those horrendous chants. I will be sharing any videos I see because there is no place for these people in football and they need to be banned. We have a lot of fans who sit by the away end and when this sort of thing happens in future, because it no doubt will, people should get their phone out and film the fans singing it, put it on the internet and shame them. I actually thought the referee did some really good things in the game by trying to let it flow, but it wasn't all perfect. Images have also emerged of graffiti inside the concourse area with references to Heysel and Hillsborough. If you are to beat Man City, you all have to got be at least an eight out of ten and that’s what we were. You go back to European games like Barcelona, Club Brugge, Dortmund and St-Etienne - it's the best 12th man in football by a mile. One of the decisions that was missed was Bernardo Silva's foul on Mohamed Salah; I was in the gantry 200 yards away and even I saw it. Other teams can look at us with envy, and I think Man City are one of those. With the team City have got, they don’t even need an atmosphere at times because they are a great side.
Liverpool invited Manchester City to Anfield with a veteran in James Milner out of position at right-back. Somehow, that's the second consecutive season ...
By dropping a little deeper and giving them an invitation to play, he can try and force everyone to act a little more like Manchester City, which in turn can open up the spaces for his rapid forwards to exploit. But by giving up a few more half-chances, Klopp can radically cut the number of big opportunities ceded, while also creating significantly more scope to utilise counter-attacks. Man-for-man, the Liverpool defence proved they are up to the challenge of facing increased pressure. That might mean easing off on the high line: while stepping everyone up allows Liverpool to pursue a relentless high pressure, it also invites teams to simply stick a long ball over the top. Manchester City left Klopp with little choice: their attacking pressure forced Liverpool to sit in, and the numbers they pushed up gave a gilt-edged invitation to make rapid offensive transitions. As such, he effectively set Klopp up to roll back the years, allowing Liverpool to produce a vintage counter-attacking performance. If nothing else, the confidence in the squad is bound to be boosted. Guardiola is no stranger to tweaking his approach to suit the tactical demands of a given game, sometimes to a fault. But ultimately, for all of the things that Liverpool did right, there is also a sense that Manchester City made things relatively easy. But he will never preside over a strategy that places greater focus on off-the-ball work than on what to do in possession.
