All versions of the ARM Surface Pro 9 will have sub-6 5G support. Meanwhile, the cheapest model with the SQ 3 ARM chip is $1,300 with the same storage and RAM. Microsoft hasn’t announced official details of the SQ 3, but reports claim it’s an overclocked Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, which is a 5nm system-on-a-chip (SoC) with eight high-power CPU cores. This is the first time since 2020’s Surface Pro X that Microsoft has offered an ARM chip in its Surface line, but it’s not giving the device a separate branding this time — they’re all just different versions of the Surface Pro 9. It’s $180 for the keyboard and $280 for the keyboard and stylus combo. While the Surface Pro 9 has the usual spec-bumped Intel processor, a sharp PixelSense display, and Thunderbolt 4 ports, there’s also an option to swap the Intel part for a new SQ 3 custom ARM chip.

Considering the high brightness range and the 3:2 aspect ratio, I love using my Surface Pro 8 for work, and I think the Surface Pro 9 will work just as well. On the other hand, be prepared to feel big performance differences with the Surface Pro 9 with 5G if you used the last generation Surface Pro X. The display across both the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 9 is identical, so you’re not missing out on any display technology by going for one model or the other. First, the Surface Pro 8 has last-generation CPUs, while the Intel Surface Pro 9 has the latest Intel CPUs and benefits from newer chip technology. Of course, the older Intel chips in the Surface Pro 8 are also fine. I expect performance similar to that of a ThinkPad X13 on the 5G version of the Surface Pro 9 since the Microsoft SQ3 is based on the Snapdragon 8cX Gen 3.

So, that’s the reason that the Surface Pro 9 doesn’t have a microSD card slot. With it, you can plug your microSD card into the adapter, then plug the adapter into one of the Surface Pro 9’s USB-C ports. There’s one big reason that the Surface Pro 9 doesn’t have a microSD card slot. Of course, this isn’t ideal, but if you must use a microSD card slot, it will have to do. DisplayLink is thankfully supported on Arm devices, so this should work great if you want to use multiple displays with the 5G model. However, USB 4 is not supported by the Microsoft SQ3 processor inside the Surface Pro 9 with 5G, so that’s not an option either. An option some laptops have gone for is using USB 4, which is the same as Thunderbolt 3, and fairly close to Thunderbolt 4. But that begs the question, is Thunderbolt 4 supported on the Surface Pro 9? The answer is yes, but it depends on the model you get. Thunderbolt expands on the capabilities of USB Type-C by supporting up to 40Gbps of bandwidth, but it also includes power delivery and PCIe signaling.

But while the Surface Pro chassis was left relatively unchanged between the Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 7 Plus, this isn’t the same as the Surface Pro 8. When the original Surface Laptop was introduced, it was the first Surface to come in aluminum, which is easier to make in colors than magnesium was. The reason I was given was because Microsoft wanted bolder colors for the Surface Pro tablets, rather than the more subtle colors that it’s shifted to in the Surface Laptop lineup. According to Microsoft, introducing the Surface Pro in pretty colors like this was always the plan ever since it decided to move to aluminum. It’s the same size and thickness, but the ports have been moved. There are Intel and Arm options now, packing 12th-gen U-series chips on the Intel side and the new Microsoft SQ3 on the Qualcomm side.

The unit gets its performance from either a 12th Gen Intel Core processor built on the EVO platform with Thunderbolt 4, or the Microsoft SQ3 powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon with 5G capability. It provides the user with a journal, canvas on which to create, a notepad, an editing bay, as well as a cinema screen.

The setup on the Surface Pro 9 is actually fairly limited, featuring two USB Type-C ports and a Surface Connect port. The wins for the Surface Pro 9 continue in the webcam department. The Surface Laptop 5 is still using a 720p camera for calls, while the Pro 9 has a 1080p front-facing camera (even though previous models actually had a 5MP sensor). Both the Surface Pro 9 and the Laptop 5 max out with 1TB of storage and 32GB of RAM, but the Surface Pro 9 with 5G is more limited, with a maximum 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. An advantage for the Surface Laptop 5 is that the lowest storage tier is 256GB, double what you get with the Pro 9 in the base model. In this regard, the Surface Pro 9 is much more impressive, with its 13-inch display coming in at a very sharp 2880 x 1920 resolution. The Surface Pro 9 is a very thin device, so cooling can be more difficult and you might face thermal throttling more so than with the Surface Laptop 5. The flip side to this performance story is battery life, and Microsoft promises significantly better battery life on the Surface Pro 9 with 5G compared to Wi-Fi model (19 hours vs 15.5 hours). Microsoft has merged the Surface Pro X into the Pro 9 family, which means it now comes with an optional Arm-based processor, the Microsoft SQ3.
