Japan bids farewell to slain leader as anger grows over cost of funeral and the ruling party's ties to a fringe church.
“Polls suggest few believe Kishida has handled the Church issue competently and this is part of the reason he has plunged in the polls. By a 2-1 margin the public opposes the state funeral and much of this opposition can be attributed to Abe’s toxic legacies and limited achievements,” said Jeffrey Kingston, professor of history and Asian studies at Temple University in Japan. [resignation for health reasons in 2020](/economy/2020/8/28/japans-abe-leaves-office-with-legacy-of-longevity-security), Abe was also mired in scandals in which he was alleged to have misused political funds and engaged in cronyism. The event began at 2pm local time (05:00 GMT) with Japan’s Self Defense Forces firing 19 shots in honour of the influential politician as his wife, Akie Abe, carried his ashes into Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan hall.

Without Mr Abe's leadership, there would not have been any Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), also known as the TPP11 trade pact. Then there were accusations that he destroyed the foundations of democracy. He recounted how he spent three hours at a yakitori (chicken skewers) restaurant in Ginza, trying to persuade Mr Abe to become prime minister again for the second time in 2012. Former PM Eisaku Sato, Japan's second-longest serving post-war premier and the only one to have won a Nobel Peace Prize, was not accorded the honour. The protest, which drew thousands, had a carnival-like atmosphere. Local governments were not requested to fly the national flag at half-mast. The Crown Prince and his wife were among the mourners who offered flowers during the service. The mood was sombre in the arena. Mr Kishida, who served as Mr Abe's foreign minister, said in an emotional tribute: "Mr Abe, you were someone who needed to live a long life. Both men entered politics for the first time in 1993. [Mr Abe draped with black ribbon hung over a bank of green, white and yellow flowers. Even now, when I'm alone, I can't help but reminisce those days," he said.
