Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton: Jacob Ramsey's first half goal gives ... (Eurosport.com)

Aston Villa claimed a much-needed 1-0 victory over Southampton on a night when the Premier League had its first opportunity to pay tribute to the Queen.

– Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton. 41’ – GOAL! The midfielder was dangerous throughout and will hope to kick on from here and hit the heights that saw him stand-out for much of last term. The 21-year-old netted his first goal of the season and produced one of his best performances too. The Brazilian has failed to deliver so far this term but looked more like his dynamic and inventive self, and that can only be good news for Villans moving forward. The Saints are one place better off in 12th but only on goals scored.

Steven Gerrard's team register hard-fought win as Premier League resumes.

Villa’s performance was workmanlike and far from fluid, in reality doing little to ease long-term fears of the team’s direction in the league under Gerrard. Ahead of kick-off at Villa Park, there was a minute's silence followed by the national anthem in a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. Fourth from the bottom at kickoff, Villa had won just one of their previous 10 league games and did little to suggest they would improve that record for the majority of the first half.

U18s hit Aston Villa for six in nine-goal thriller | West Ham United F.C. (West Ham United F.C.)

Orford secured his brace minutes into the second half, and goals from Billy Bates, Gideon Kodua and Blaise Uwandji put the result beyond all doubt. Despite the ...

You could see what the goal meant for him and also what it meant to his teammates, especially in the changing room after the match. “We talked things through at half time and we made a couple of small tweaks and I thought that we were really good in the second half. “He has worked his socks off, and credit to the physios, the doctors and the sports scientist staff that have worked with him every day. West Ham secured their sixth - and the ninth goal of the match in added time - and it was arguably the best of the lot. If we want to achieve things this year, if we want to get to finals, if we want to stay at the top of the league, we have lots of work to do defensively. Asher Falase’s cross was fantastic, and Orford flicked the ball towards the bottom left corner with his head, but Wright was down well to make a smart save. Orford’s deep corner was knocked down by Casey and Bates cleverly poked the ball into the corner, sparking jubilant scenes as the hosts took a 4-2 lead. Ben Broggio raced onto the ball, dribbled around Mason Terry, and passed the ball into the back of the net. The Hammers were robbed of possession on the edge of the 18-yard box and that proved to be costly. The Aston Villa No9 made no mistake, smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Casey met the ball superbly with his head, leaving James Wright with no chance in the Villa net. So we are disappointed with the way we defended as a team, but to score six goals, with two or three of them being such good goals, it has turned into a good morning for us.”
