And as the director Gautham Menon wanted a realistic story, they kept everything minimal and didn’t show Simbu in a heroic image. What is the storyline of his latest release VTK or Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu?VTK is a gangster's story, and the audience can expect much reality from it. But, they accept a movie if its content is good and touches the heart of the mass. What did Simbu say about the boycott trend?Simbu said that the audiences have all the right and power to boycott a film if they don’t like it. And in his third movie, the actor-director combo hasn’t opted for another love story as they wanted to give something else to the audience. [Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu](/topic/vendhu-thanindhathu-kaadu), [Silambarasan TR](/topic/silambarasan-tr)said he and his director [Gautham Menon](/topic/gautham-menon)have tried to break the movie pattern they used to do to impress the audience.

'Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu' movie review: Simbu and Gautham ... (The Hindu)

Simbu is as invisible as Gautham Menon in 'Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu' and this is a welcome departure for them. Yet, something feels incomplete.

Not exactly that but we at least get to hear the woman say, “This is wrong” and not fall for his charms. Which is why I am not exactly sure what to make of the last 10 minutes that teases for a second installment. But my favourite shot is when Muthu goes to a textile shop where he meets Pallavi (Siddhi Idnani, in a badly-acted and bad-written romance) for the first time. The filmmaker has also taken a few criticisms of his previous films — with regard to normalising stalking — for the better. This is Simbu’s best acting in ages for the simple reason that we, thankfully, don’t see Simbu in the film. Aatrin payanam.” The choice that Muthu has made is “aatrin payanam”. We get this terrific line from Muthu’s friend Saravanan (Appukutty): “They are like big machines and we are just like screws on them, not knowing anything about the machine.” Come to think of it, the “machine analogy” gets fully-realised in the interval block when Muthu is forced to take a pistol to defend. At least that is how VTK opens, with Muthu (Silambarasan) being the ember in a dying fire who gets thrown out of it, as if to imply that he is a survivor. And the next 40-odd minutes is dedicated to the everydayness of Muthu’s life; the people he meets, the stories he listens to. Therefore, there is no urgency to rush over the story, no urgency for immediate pay-offs. And Gautham Menon anyway isn’t interested in telling the story of a gangster; he seems content with the journey itself. He seems interested in capturing the life of Muthu in real time.

Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is one of the masterpieces he has made till date, made by Gautham Menon Vasudev.

Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is one of the masterpieces he has made till date. It is proved that he is one of the most bankable actors in the Tamil film industry. He doesn’t take risks with any other genres and is a pro when it comes to making films in both these genres. Gautham Menon has explored the unseen side of mafia, the lives and danger involved in it and how people are exploited. That everything and anything even means if he has to cross paths with the underworld don and mafia. He’s got to deal with a lot of things and to survive he has to take up anything and everything that comes his way.

Silambarasan TR's much-awaited gangster saga Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu has hit screens today.

Her role is said to be crucial for the film. Though Gautham Menon, who is predominantly known for his romantic films, has experimented with action in films like Vettaiyadu Vilayadu and Yennai Arindhaal, Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu will mark a tectonic shift in his style of filmmaking. The film follows his journey.

VTK is as much the coming-of-age story of a helpless Muthu (Silambarasan) from Naduvakurichi as it is about an outsider entering and then making it in ...

Without the usual flourishes and choreography, it is as though these lovers are simply speaking to each other in poetry, only for it to “sound” like a song that is playing to the viewer. STR gets us to feel the body-ache Muthu feels when we see him limping from place to place in his village. Jeyamohan’s writing is deftly complemented by Gautham Menon’s filmmaking style, especially when the outsider gaze contributes to a feeling of isolation and discomfort in a punishing terrain early on and then in a strange new city. Their paths keep converging and in the beginning, we sense that it is Sreedharan who got the raw end of the deal. In the arid thorn bushes that Muthu calls home, a job is the safest escape route. But the fusion of these two narrative threads is so harmonious that there’s no dissonance between the internal journey of a man destined to a life of crime and the external journey that traverses landscapes, morality, language, and time.

The formulaic twist of using the wife/girlfriend as bait is quite disappointing (how it unfolds reminded me of Kaakha Kaakha), and I wish Siddhi had more to do in the film than play the love interest. Just how far Gautham has moved away from his previous filmography is evident in where the hero and heroine (Siddhi Idnani, playing Paavai) meet – in a small clothes shop where a shy Muthu needs to buy underwear. It’s a risk because the audience may complain that they didn’t understand a line here or there, but it makes the film sound a lot more authentic. Muthu’s back is covered with thorns as he jumps through the flames and over the fence to save his life – it’s a metaphor for what’s to come. When his mother (Radikaa looks miscast) makes him remove his shirt to make a point about their suffering to his uncle, you can see the loss of dignity in his face – and he conveys it without needing to break into tears. He’s shown to be fearless in his village, but it’s more the fight of a cornered animal than the flamboyance of a hero.

And yet, we are expected to fill up a lot of such meaning and detail in our head, with the film not quite showing great desire in wading into them. And much like in that series where the wand is said to choose the owner, here too, someone says that the gun picks its master. The high point that the first half of VTK moves towards too, is somewhat similar. How has it affected him, and how has he affected it? I also enjoyed that Madhushree’s ‘Mallipoo’ is sung not from the perspective of the dozens of dancing men, but the lonely woman we don’t see in the video call. The allegory, of course, is of people—like Muthu—whose lives hurt and hurt without respite. And when Paavai eventually wears wedding clothes, that’s when you know she’s in real trouble in the GVM universe. Sophistication is a luxury for the impoverished Muthu (Simbu maintains a rather distinct, lopsided walk throughout the film). Someone else says that the gun controls the man and not the other way round. This scorched setting of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Part 1: The Kindling, while the title flashes, serves as a prelude for what is to follow during the remainder of the film as Muthu negotiates with the life-equivalent of fires and thorns. [played by a thoroughly invested Simbu](https://www.cinemaexpress.com/tamil/interviews/2022/sep/14/silambarasan-tr-gvm-brings-out-the-real-actor-in-me-34668.html)—is unusual too in the GVM world. At several points in the film, the strange power of this gun is alluded to, almost like it were the Elder Wand in Harry Potter.
