5 talking points from Liverpool 2-1 Ajax (This Is Anfield)

Liverpool were vastly improved on last week's dismal defeat to Napoli and claimed a late victory thanks to Joel Matip's header to secure a 2-1 Anfield win ...

[Joel Matip](https://www.thisisanfield.com/liverpool-fc/joel-matip/) was very good, on and off the ball. That’s how it has been for a few years now, but not this week. It made it all the more reassuring when in stoppage time Ajax resorted to whacking it long in search of a late chance; they hadn’t won a header all night and were not going to win one of those ones either. [Diogo Jota](https://www.thisisanfield.com/liverpool-fc/diogo-jota/)‘s return from injury was also a return to some form – he struggled badly at the end of last season from a technical perspective, but his running and energy was a welcome addition to the team after some horrid, flat showings in the front line recently. [Newcastle](https://www.thisisanfield.com/liverpool-fc/newcastle/) game off one, but it was hardly because of great delivery or movement, rather we just managed to keep the ball alive for Carvalho to thump in. Perhaps more than all those individuals down the centre of the side was the fact that we had a bit of bravery about our game: a willingness to press high, even up into the six-yard box again, and a desire to try and play our way through with quick link-ups and more players attacking the box. [Thiago](https://www.thisisanfield.com/liverpool-fc/thiago/) was as glorious and necessary as you’d expect, with his patented body swerves and excellent passing in the centre all on show in the first few minutes. [Jurgen Klopp](https://www.thisisanfield.com/liverpool-fc/jurgen-klopp/) wanted a response, but not as much as every fan did, we can assure him of that – it was embarrassing in Naples and totally unacceptable from the players. He’s a class above more often than not; the only problem is that he was a class above against his own team too, with few able to match his incision on the ball. Meanwhile, around that discussion of improvement, changes to the team and who even deserved to play, was the wider-looming fact of a royal death and the postponements and planning which were going on around that. Yet it all made for a circus of sorts around the build-up to the game, with most of football – not just Liverpool fans – fuming at more absurd decision-making by the FA, the [Joel Matip](https://www.thisisanfield.com/liverpool-fc/joel-matip/)‘s header to secure a 2-1 Anfield win over Ajax.

Liverpool vs Ajax: Matip plays Anfield hero in 89th minute (NBC Sports)

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool was in danger of starting the UEFA Champions League group stage in very poor fashion when Joel Matip (and GDS) stepped forward.

And after generating close to $220 million in player sales, Ajax seem to have done some brilliant business in the transfer window. Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez will perhaps be the next star to leave Ajax and Liverpool would love to have the midfield solidity he brings. Liverpool faced Ajax in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stage and won both games 1-0. The only other time they’ve played each other in European competition was in this competition in 1966, as Johann Cruyff inspired a 5-1 win in Amsterdam in the first leg, as a 2-2 draw at Anfield in the second leg led to a 7-3 aggregate win for Ajax over Liverpool. Liverpool have won just two of their seven games in all competitions to start the season and with Mohamed Salah also scoring just twice so far, plus Darwin Nunez taking time to settle, there is concern that Liverpool may get stuck in this rut. Ajax will look to take full advantage of Liverpool’s current malaise as Dusan Tadic continues to captain the side and create problems galore with his clever flicks and passes. The reigning Dutch champions have made a habit of causing upsets in the Champions League and going on deep runs in the competition in recent seasons. Everybody’s hoping it just goes in the right direction and you get the setback and you could see the impact of that. Add in their brilliant display of forward running and high-pressing against Rangers and this is exactly the type of team Liverpool don’t want to face right now. So halftime 1-1 and it was clear we had to go back to how we started because it was intense for Ajax, too.” The pressing before their goal was much better than after their goal and we only talk about a yard or two in these moments. They say a lot to put us down, but we know the last game was unacceptable and this was a step in the right direction.”

Ajax, on the other hand, beat SC Heerenveen 5-0 in its previous match and has also started its UCL campaign on a winning note, against Rangers. Liverpool and Ajax last locked horns two years ago, in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. The Dutch champion has shown no dip in form (in the league) since its manager Erik Ten Hag left for Manchester United before the start of this season.

Unlikely hero saves Reds as late drama strikes twice for PL giants ... (Fox Sports)

It was pleasure and pain in the Champions League on Tuesday (AEST) for Liverpool and Tottenham who had mixed fortunes in the closing minutes of their second ...

Sporting top the group with six points, while Eintracht Frankfurt joined Spurs on three points thanks to a 1-0 win in Marseille, with Jesper Lindstrom scoring in the first half. But Paulinho headed in from the resulting 90th-minute corner, and Brazilian Arthur Gomes came off the bench to make it 2-0 with a superb solo strike in injury time. Andrich curled the opener into the bottom corner from the edge of the area on 84 minutes, before Diaby tucked in the second at the end of a brutal counter-attack three minutes later. Meanwhile Antonio Conte’s Spurs slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Sporting in Portugal in Group D, with the home side scoring both goals late on at the Jose Alvalade stadium. The Spanish side were left reeling after Leverkusen struck twice in the last six minutes to claim only their second win of the season and leapfrog Atletico into second in Group B. The Germany attacker scored Bayern’s second in the 54th minute, chipping a ball over Catalan keeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, just three minutes after Bayern’s Hernandez headed in a corner from Joshua Kimmich to open the scoring. Bayern’s France defender Lucas Hernandez headed in a corner to open the scoring, but it was Sane who put the game beyond doubt for the home side. A record-equalling defeat in the Champions League for Liverpool compounded an already poor start to the Premier League season. Two second-half goals in three minutes, including a superb chip from Leroy Sane, helped Bayern Munich defeat Barcelona 2-0 on Robert Lewandowski’s return to Bavaria in the Champions League on Tuesday. Victory takes Liverpool level on three points with Ajax and Napoli, who travel to Rangers in the other game in Group A on Wednesday. But with Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota restored to the starting line-up after injuries, Liverpool were a far closer reflection of the side that came to within two games of a historic quadruple last season. Tottenham looked set to claim an away point at Sporting Lisbon, but conceded twice in extra time to slump to a 2-0 defeat at the death.

Six things seen in Liverpool vs Ajax as underrated Diogo Jota trait ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool left it late, but they managed to beat Ajax in the Champions League with a late winner from Joël Matip. This is what we spotted.

He was just unable to force it into the net. He arguably fluffed his lines when Salah shuffled the ball into his path, failing to beat the goalkeeper from close range. It is bordering on irresponsible to be so reliant on him, but the fact of the matter is that he remains crucial to any success this season. It is hard to get too excited about his return, amid the constant fear he could be out again at any moment. Even when coming on at 4-1 down against Napoli, he showed what he brings to the team. And though he has rightly earned a reputation as a marksman, the key thing he brought to the table here was link-up. Taking it well, he won the smallest pocket of space against But Alexander-Arnold got sucked in, leaving acres of room for the winger to utilise. It was then a simple ball to Liverpool dominated for large periods — and not just in terms of possession, but in terms of the balance of chances. The forward gave a firm reminder that he intends to push for a starting berth. But no striker can really match up to the Brazilian at his peak in this department, and the former Wolves man is undoubtedly underrated.
