Brighton's Graham Potter to Become Next Chelsea Manager, per ... (Sports Illustrated)

The coach is set to replace Thomas Tuchel at the helm at Stamford Bridge after leading Brighton to its best Premier League finish last season.

After arriving at Chelsea in January 2021 following the tenure of Frank Lampard, the German manager led the club to a Champions League title and Club World Cup trophy, but he fell out of favor under the club’s new American ownership. Last season, Potter’s name rose to the surface as a premier coaching candidate after leading the club to ninth on 51 points, its highest-ever finish in the Premier League and just five points shy of qualifying for European competition. Potter has led Brighton to its current fourth-place standing in the Premier League after four wins from its first six games, including a season-opening win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Brighton have sent a farewell message to Graham Potter after the head coach made the move to Chelsea.

With Potter seen as the ideal candidate for a long-term push, the Blues triggered the release clause in his contract to bring him to the club. Brighton chairman Bloom sent a farewell message in an official statement that reads: "I am very disappointed that Graham will be leaving us. Potter spent just over three seasons in charge at Brighton, going on to make them a formidable side that also played an attractive style of play.

Brighton & Hove Albion look set to become the next Premier League club in the market for a new head coach as Graham Potter closes in on the top job at Chelsea.

Once that is confirmed, the Seagulls will have to begin the search for the Englishman’s successor and the bookmakers are already taking bets on who that might be. Potter has been in charge of the Seagulls for three seasons, led them to a ninth place finish in the 2021/22 campaign and currently has the side sitting fourth in the Premier League table. Graham Potter to Chelsea: Why Blues wanted to bring Brighton boss ... (Sky Sports)

Graham Potter has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea after finalising a move from Brighton; Potter led the Seagulls to ninth in the Premier League ...

Now, he just has to hope he is afforded the time to do it. "It was about being open to new things, stripping away the barriers which sometimes exist in a team, all the hierarchies, and developing players as people," Potter told Sky Sports. "There are so many different dynamics to the team you need to look at. "Tactically he is amazing, the coaching staff are really good, they always try to help us in every aspect. One of his other sporting projects, the LA Dodgers baseball team, has had the same manager in place since 2015, and it is not unusual for new owners to want their own man at the helm. The topic of motivation also presents his biggest question mark, as it does of all managers without an elite-level club on their CV. The versatility of his squad has been almost unmatched across the division. Look at the path Leandro Trossard has trodden since he joined in the same summer as Potter. But it rings just as true to how Boehly wants to run one of the world's biggest clubs. The obvious product of his philosophy has been their brand of passing football, but his work on the south coast has run far beyond the tactics board. That comes in comparison to Tuchel's Chelsea who, even in his brightest moments, always struggled to nail down a clear identity. What Potter has been building at Brighton has been much longer in the making.

Brighton 'hugely disappointed' at Graham Potter move to Chelsea ... (Teamtalk.com)

Brighton chiefs Tony Bloom and David Weir have expressed their frustration at seeing Graham Potter leave for Chelsea, but vowed to "move on quickly".

The worry for Brighton is a drop-off from where they were under Potter. Manager Potter has moved to Stamford Bridge on a five-year contract following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel there. Although, Brighton’s reputation in recent years means they surely won’t make a hasty appointment. It remains unclear how far they will drop – if at all – but there will have to be a transitional period for the new manager. It is therefore going to be a baptism of fire for the new coach. As for Brighton, Potter leaves the Seagulls fourth in the Premier League table and in the midst of an impressive rise.
