Priti Patel has written to Boris Johnson telling him she will be resigning as Home Secretary after Liz Truss takes office as prime minister.

In her letter to Mr Johnson, Ms Patel argued that it was “vital” to press on with the policy, signalling that she would continue to champion the scheme from the backbenches. “It is my choice to continue my public service to the country and the Witham constituency from the backbenches, once Liz formally assumes office and a new home secretary is appointed.” While Ms Patel pledged her support for the new leader, she said it was “vital” that she continued to support the policies she had pursued to tackle illegal immigration –

The departure of Priti Patel from the Home Office as home secretary is a good thing in itself.

In the case of the Rwanda policy, the Tories seem determined to deliver something that is not desirable, practical, productive and is almost certainly illegal. Even in its own terms and despite all the rhetoric, Tory immigration policy is not working. Perhaps the litmus test on that will be in the appointment of her home secretary and the failed policy of Rwandan deportations. In recent memory it helped blow up the careers not just of Priti Patel, but also Amber Rudd and to a large extent David Cameron, as the Brexit debate became infernally entwined with immigration and control of our borders. Yet the cost of the Rwanda policy is astronomical, especially in light of the tiny numbers of people that have been removed initially with great fanfare. She added that she was “determined to see the Rwanda policy through to full implementation as well as exploring other countries where we can work on similar partnerships”.

She says that her ‘achievements’ have been delivered “despite the relentless efforts of our political opponents, and left-wing activists, lawyers and campaigners who have sought to block these measures.” The language of the letter is also a stark reminder of Patel and the Tories’ attitudes towards migrants. Instead, it’s because the rights of migrants are important – and Patel and her government have done everything they can get away with to take them away. She goes on to celebrate the much criticised Rwanda deportation scheme – branding it a “world-first” and stressing that she wants to see the new government of Liz Truss maintaining it. The letter itself is a damning description of her time in the Home Office, and the Tories’ hard-right policies on migration. The Rwanda policy has been described by migration and human rights experts as “cruel” and “inhumane”.
