A cause of much controversy already, this Olivia Wilde-directed thriller starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles has finally premiered.
Considering the depth of detail in the visual world-building, we're given frustratingly little information on what, well, the Victory project is about or wants to achieve. Layered over this, the music feels all over the place too, with a score made up of breathy female voices and thudding thriller tones contrasting, to whiplash effect, with era-specific popular songs. Unsurprisingly, his finest moment is when he gets up for a song-and-dance number; there's no denying his charm on stage, but on the screen, matinée idol he is not. Immersing itself in this era of Rat Pack allure with its festering misogynistic underbelly, the story explodes the enduring fantasy of the nuclear family and lays bare the dangers of romanticising the past. That's not to mention that the dystopian suburban setting feels wholly unoriginal too, considering The Stepford Wives exists, though that story was aided by a healthy helping of satire. He was then replaced by Harry Styles, who stars alongside Florence Pugh as Alice and Jack, a couple lucky enough to participate in the Victory project with its unbridled glamour, uncompromising comfort and traditional family roles.

Wilde can’t figure out how to get the story out of this eddy; she stalls and repeats until it’s time to just go ahead and reveal what’s happening because the movie has to end at some point. What remains consistent and undaunted throughout, though, is Pugh, a commanding and centered actor who makes the most of the hash she’s served. Of course, there is an ominous hum underlying all this sozzled good-living, the sense that nothing this perfectly secure and uniformly agreeable could be real. This is a planned community built by a shadowy corporation, one that has a vaguely messianic mission to advance humanity . Now that the film has debuted, maybe we can just focus on the movie itself, which is neither triumph nor disaster. Let us, if we can, put aside all the various mini-controversies that surrounded the lead up to the Venice premiere of Don’t Worry Darling.

The 1950s societal optimism espoused by their CEO, Frank (Pine) — equal parts corporate visionary and motivational life coach — anchors every aspect of daily life in the tight-knit desert utopia. Florence Pugh and Harry Styles play a couple who find trouble in paradise in a thriller that's nowhere near as interesting as its production history.
These are diverting but also depressing questions, and this is a review of a movie, not of a publicity campaign. [isolated, master-planned community](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2022-08-29/dont-worry-darling-palm-springs-olivia-wilde-fall-arts-preview), and also by the bright-colored surfaces of Katie Byron’s Atomic Age production design. Does that make Pugh the living embodiment of her heroine, a much-abused woman quietly but determinedly eyeing the exits? [“Booksmart,”](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-booksmart-review-20190523-story.html) with its furious pacing and whip-smart comedy, may be surprised by the peculiar leadenness of this sophomore slump. Wilde’s most arresting visual flourish is to reference the kaleidoscopic dance spectacles of Busby Berkeley, as Alice is repeatedly struck by black-and-white visions of 1930s-style showgirls dancing in circular formations. If you follow celebrity gossip and movie-biz headlines, you’ve probably read a thing or two about that history, particularly the At a certain point — around the time Alice’s eyes fall on a secret folder labeled “SECURITY RISK” (because “PLOT TWIST INCOMING” would’ve been too obvious) — what’s meant to be creepily insinuating in “Don’t Worry Darling” turns laughably blunt. Directed by Olivia Wilde and written by Katie Silberman (from a story credited to Silberman, Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke), it’s a handsomely assembled, increasingly transparent thriller that stomps when it should creep and drags when it should accelerate. It helps that Alice has a husband, Jack (Harry Styles), who’s more or less the anti-Ralph, and not just because he thinks nothing of sweeping the dinner plates aside and treating his wife as a tabletop amuse-bouche. And “Don’t Worry Darling,” for all its sinister undercurrents and feints at subversion, turns out to be a disappointingly heavy thud of a movie. Who exactly is Frank (a silky-smooth Chris Pine), the combination corporate boss, town mayor and cult leader who exerts such a hold on Alice and Jack and the other couples living in this sunbaked utopia? Watching her go about her daily routine — cooking every meal, cleaning the house from top to bottom and venturing into town for the occasional grocery run — you might be reminded of Alice Kramden.

Supposedly something has happened to Margaret’s son, the sort of thing that would generally galvanize everyone in a small, close-knit neighborhood, but no one will talk about it. But even if Don’t Worry Darling could be much better than it is, I’ve seen plenty of pictures made with much greater ineptitude, by fat-ego directors who are not very nice in real life—and who may even, perhaps, have slept with their lead actresses, causing discomfort or friction on the set. [Florence Pugh](https://time.com/collection/time100-next-2021/5937673/florence-pugh/) and [Harry Styles](https://time.com/4769079/harry-styles-tour-sold-out/)—and playing out of competition at the 79th Venice Film Festival—has already been decreed a disaster by many who have seen only the trailer. And there’s at least the germ of an intelligent idea at the heart of Don’t Worry Darling. The biggest problem with Don’t Worry Darling is that it ends in the wrong place: This could have been a reasonably effective dystopian chiller, but it takes a sharp swerve into feminist triumph that feels patched-on and facile. They take care of the children, if they have them, and greet their husbands cheerfully at the end of the day. Every morning, the men kiss their wives goodbye and hop in into their jaunty tailfin cars, zooming off through the desert in unison to “work,” whatever that might be: they’re part of a shadowy experiment called the Victory Project, spearheaded by a charismatic Ken-doll work and lifestyle guru named Frank ( But before long, Alice notices there’s something a little odd about the place. There’s no need for them to work outside the home, nor do they have the desire to. Many of the naysayers-in-advance are those who have heard the gossip—and who hasn’t?—that Pugh became so frustrated with Wilde on the set, particularly in light of her romance with Styles, that she ostensibly had to direct herself. Don’t Worry Darling, no matter where you stand on the matter of Olivia Wilde’s personal life—or, for that matter, what you make of her ambitions—deserves to be judged on its own merits, and it does have a few.

(The sense of growing unease is aided by John Powell’s excellent score, which sounds like it’s built from the chants and wails of women.) Arianne Phillips’s period costuming—a mix of custom-designed and vintage pieces—is a feast for fans of 1950s fashion; just be prepared for those gorgeous gowns and suits to get soiled as the story progresses. It wears its reference points on its sleeve (Wilde has already named the The Matrix and The Truman Show as important inspirations), but in a Hollywood landscape marred by spin-offs and remakes, Don’t Worry Darling feels like a balm. The pair have no children, so her days are spent shopping with her friends, “gardening” (which really means drinking on sun loungers in the backyard with her best friend Bunny, played by Wilde), and preparing dinner for when Jack returns home.

The end product is a smorgasbord of high octane thrillers, similar to “Gone Girl” (2014), which landed a single nom for its leading actress Rosamund Pike. Gossip-hungry fans, however, seem to have been having fun; compared to some of the nastier stories that come out of Hollywood, the Don’t Worry Darling gossip is comparatively lighthearted. This claim was disputed by LaBeouf, who insisted that he had quit the movie of his own accord. Of course, Pugh’s careful timing only fueled the flames of gossip. Pine does seem to react to something - perhaps his phone lit up with a notification, or maybe the sunglasses on his lap shifted. To many viewers, the viral clip appeared to show Styles spitting on Pine’s lap, while others dismissed the claim as ridiculous. The clip shows Styles pursing his lips, before taking his seat beside Pine - Pine quickly glances down at his lap, seemingly in disbelief.

Olivia Wilde's film 'Don't Worry Darling' has too much drama to track. Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine? Does Florence Pugh hate the director?

Dude seems to be on a different plane of existence the entire festival — at times But it does seem a bit weird to judge the film before it's even reached the public. For instance, Pugh might've turned away from Wilde at the Venice Film Festival as the audience gave the movie a standing ovation. He shared a video in which Wilde appears to ask him to come back to the production.
Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine,” Pine's rep told 'People' of the co-stars' rumored interaction at Monday's premiere.
Additional video shows Styles smiling and speaking to Pine shortly before the screening starts—not behavior typical of two people who shared a spiteful (spit-full?) interaction. Many noted that in the video, Pine appears to glance at and pick up a pair of sunglasses in his lap, which could be why he looks in that direction after Styles sits. Speculation shifted to the dynamic between Pine and Styles when video of the latter’s entrance into Venice’s Sala Grande Theatre led some to believe that the musician spat on Pine before taking a seat next to him.
