But Piastri had already signed for McLaren by then, inking a contract on July 4. "I felt McLaren was a great opportunity. 'Breakdown in trust' led to Alpine exit - Piastri (BBC Sport)

McLaren won a dispute over Piastri with Alpine on Friday, after F1's contract recognition board (CRB) ruled they had a valid contract with the 21-year-old.

Seidl said: "The reason why I wanted to get Oscar on board is because he has shown in his junior career that he is a very talented driver with a lot of potential. McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl added: "Alpine was informed well in advance before the announcement they made regarding Oscar driving for them next year. "It is complex for any rookie to join Formula 1. "Once we were in private, I told Otmar what our position was and what he had been told multiple times before that. Piastri said: "That was a bizarre and frankly upsetting episode. I think he has the right level of self-confidence as well. "He is young, fresh, full of energy. "But after spending the year out, my hopes were firmly set on an Alpine seat. "McLaren was a great opportunity. Piastri, Szafnauer said, smiled and thanked him. "The lack of clarity around my future, and ultimately a breakdown in trust, I felt the very attractive offer of McLaren and the positive dealings with them thus far were all reasons why I felt McLaren was where I was best off for the future."

“There’s only a couple of days left, today and tomorrow. Alpine defence collapses as Szafnauer returns fire on Piastri (Fox Sports)

McLaren has sensationally claimed that Alpine knew of Oscar Piastri's planned switch in advance as the French team's defence begins to unravel.

“I said at the time that even if there is a loophole that goes against us, we performed on the contract that we thought we had — above and beyond,” he said. I can tell you now it was myself [and] the simulator technician — who happened to be in the same room, but if you’ve ever seen a sim, it’s a pretty big room, and there were three of us in that room. “Once we were in private I told Otmar what our position was and what he had been told multiple times before that. and I never will, but what I can tell you is to reiterate what I said before,” he said. “That was a bizarre and frankly upsetting episode,” he said. “[On 4 July] there were some rumours,” he said.

McLaren's new Australian signing has spoken out after he was falsely announced as a driver for Alpine.

“I can’t not take an opportunity because the previous driver in that seat was Daniel. His achievements in the sport – his race wins and podiums – but also his personality he brings to the sport. “I wish him all the best for whatever his future holds. “As a fellow Australian, it’s unfortunate that of all people on the grid, it’s Daniel who I will be replacing,” he said. “I have immense respect for Daniel. “It was done publicly in front of some members of the team who were oblivious to the situation [regarding his contract talks with McLaren] and I didn’t want to cause a scene in front of them,” Piastri said.
