Lakers News: L.A. Trading Youth For Patrick Beverley (Sports Illustrated)

Well, it finally happened: your Los Angeles Lakers have traded an overpaid, underperforming player who has proved to be an awkward fit alongside their ...

After his lone season with the Timberwolves, the 34-year-old out of the University of Arkansas was dealt to the Jazz as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Rudy Gobert to Minnesota. A career 37.8% shooter from long range on volume, and a committed defender (more on that in a minute), the self-proclaimed "Mr. Johnson emerged as a surprisingly-important midseason addition to the Lakers last year. [tweets](https://twitter.com/jovanbuha/status/1562652801192185856), this will open up the Lakers' salary space next summer, with L.A. His ability to frenetically defend both forward spots endeared himself to a very old Lakers team desperate for energy on that end of the floor. Should Pelinka not find a deal he loves in time, Beverley at present is a better fit for this Lakers roster than Westbrook, and would make more sense as a starter should the latter player remain on the team into the beginning of the season. Adding a competent, experienced point guard in Beverley addresses a huge need for the Lakers, and frees up team president Rob Pelinka to look beyond positional need in any future hypothetical Brodie trade. The Lakers went 33-49 during Westbrook's first (and quite possibly last) season with his hometown team in 2021-22. Earlier this week, Charania [hinted](https://www.si.com/nba/lakers/news/lakers-targeting-patrick-beverley-and-bojan-bogdanovic-in-utah-trade-talks-ee21) that the Lakers would be interested in trying to add Beverley or another valuable Jazz vet, Bojan Bogdanovic. [Shams Charania and Tony Jones of The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3536939/2022/08/24/jazz-lakers-patrick-beverley-trade/) also reported that a trade is imminent. Lakers set to trade for former Clippers point guard Patrick Beverley (The Guardian)

Beverley is known for his intensity and defense, two areas the Lakers struggled with last season as they missed the playoffs. The hard-working 26-year-old was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise disappointing 2021-22 season for the Lakers. Now he will have a chance to prove himself in Utah. What does Lakers' trade for Patrick Beverley mean for future of ... (Sporting News)

After securing a commitment from LeBron James through at least next season, the trade was made with the big picture in mind.

Other potential free agents of note include a host of former Lakers in Josh Hart (player option) Kyle Kuzma (player option), Larry Nance Jr. Could the Lakers buy low on TJ McConnell, who missed 55 games last season and is set to make $8.1 million in the 2022-23 campaign? LA's acquisition of Beverley has caused many to speculate whether or not this is a move made with the idea that Westbrook's days as a Laker are numbered. While Beverley adds an edge to a Lakers team that missed the postseason in 2022, the trade could be much more than what meets the eye. For Rob Pelinka and the Lakers front office, there's a two-year clock to rebuild the franchise back into contender status, as James' potential to move on will continue to loom as a threat. With a month remaining until training camp for the 2022-23 season, the Lakers are looking to make the most of what remains of the offseason.

Patrick Beverley trade grades: Lakers get 'B' as they toughen up ... (CBSSports.com)

The Los Angeles Lakers have finalized a trade that sends Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Patrick Beverley, ...

The Lakers were hesitant to move Horton-Tucker in the past, but in Beverley they got a player who is better equipped to contribute to a team under a lot of pressure to make a playoff run. The Lakers were high on Horton-Tucker for quite some time, and now the Jazz will hope that he continues to improve. Horton-Tucker could prove to be the better player in the long-run, but the Lakers are in win-now mode, and that's why the move was made. Stanley Johnson is a serviceable role player, but it remains to be seen just how big of a role he'll have in Utah. He averaged 10 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 25.2 minutes per game for the Lakers last season -- numbers that could possibly improve in an expanded role on a rebuilding Jazz team. It will be interesting to see how well Westbrook and Beverley are able to coexist in the locker room, as the two have had He's not the type of player that needs to have a lot of plays ran for him to be effective, which is good because the Lakers already have a couple of those. [Russell Westbrook](/nba/players/1622555/russell-westbrook/) is no secret and now that Beverley is in town they have someone who can take his place in the starting lineup. Danny Ainge started a tear down with the Gobert trade and there was no reason to keep Beverley around as they join the race to the bottom and expected No. But with the Jazz embarking on a rebuild -- star guard [Donovan Mitchell](/nba/players/2842760/donovan-mitchell/) may be traded at some point this offseason as well -- Beverley was a prime candidate to be rerouted to another team. A veteran and one of the toughest perimeter defenders in the league, Beverley makes much more sense on this Lakers roster. With both of those players now seemingly staying in Brooklyn, it will be interesting to see if the proverbial dam breaks and more moves follow this Beverley trade.

Los Angeles Lakers acquire guard Patrick Beverley from Utah Jazz (USA TODAY)

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired guard Patrick Beverley from the Utah Jazz for Talen-Horton Tucker and Stanley Johnson.

Beverley is on a one-year, $13 million contract, and after next season, the Lakers will have just four players signed for the 2023-24 season (James, Davis, Damian Jones, Max Christie), giving the franchise an opportunity to rebuild the roster next summer. The Lakers get a defensive-minded guard who fits into first-year coach Darvin Ham’s plan to improve on that side of the court. NBA trade grades - Where the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz ... (ESPN)

Was it smart for the Los Angeles Lakers to trade for defensive firecracker Patrick Beverley? Kevin Pelton weighs in.

Depending on what happens with Utah's roster between now and the trade deadline, Horton-Tucker could have far more ability to operate with the ball in his hands. On one level, this trade makes a lot of sense for the Jazz. Horton-Tucker could be more of a long-term fit with the Jazz. One of their precious first-round picks wasn't realistic, but the Lakers actually have several second-round picks available. Alas, there's still a bigger question about the Lakers' roster, and dealing for Beverley seems to make it all the more likely Westbrook begins the season elsewhere given their very public and very long-running feud. That gives the Lakers the ability to create $30 million-plus in cap space next summer if they either let Westbrook's contract play out or deal him for other players entering the final seasons of their contracts. Assuming the Lakers fill the open roster spot with a player making the veteran minimum, they'll increase their team salary by about $2 million and their luxury-tax bill by $7 million. That's the kind of investment necessary to give their stars a credible supporting cast, particularly in the wake of LeBron's decision to commit to the Lakers beyond this season Still, Beverley is undoubtedly a positive defender and a better perimeter one than any Lakers player last season. Let's take a look at how Beverley fits with the Lakers and what the Jazz are getting out of this swap, which does not include any draft picks. More than anything, though, the Lakers' season was doomed because of a roster problem: they simply didn't have enough players who were capable at both ends of the court, forcing former coach Frank Vogel to choose between prioritizing offense and defense in filling out lineups. He was dealt twice last summer before landing in Minnesota and will now have been part of Utah's roster for an extended period without ever actually representing the Jazz.

Beverley (6’1”, 180) averaged 9.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 58 games (54 starts) for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season. A seven-year NBA veteran, Johnson began the 2021-22 season with the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League before signing three separate 10-day contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers. Former LA Clippers guard Patrick Beverley is heading to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson.

Had the Clippers opted to extend him for similar annual value to what he received from Minnesota, Beverley would likely still be with the Clippers. That said, the team headed a different direction, and will now have to face their former point guard when they play the Lakers. Despite some of his comments over the years that would indicate otherwise, the veteran guard has a close relationship with Lakers star LeBron James.
