“The digital economy in Southeast Asia is only getting started, fueled by a huge untapped but fast-growing digital consumer market. Google.org, its philanthropic arm, is committing a $1 million grant to conservation nonprofit Mandai Nature, which will work with other organisations in Southeast Asia on developing an online tool to map areas that host rich biodiversity, and hold the key to carbon reduction. (…) Here is a place where technology can succeed and exist in everyday life,” Scott Beaumont, president, Google Asia-Pacific, spoke at the Google for Singapore event on the same day.

There is also a collaboration between Google Cloud and the Smart Nation and Digital Government Group to develop AI solutions for Singaporeans. That is why we are making investments in critical infrastructure.” Google has confirmed the completion of its third data centre in Singapore, bringing its total investment in the country to US$850 million.
Google opens its third Singapore data center and boosts representation among women leaders in its Asia-Pacific region.
We hope that the solutions created with the Singapore government will then be used as best practices to be leveraged in other fields. A: If we had an issue with a data center in Singapore, we would find a way of routing that traffic through other data centers within the network. A: Singapore’s strength is in collaboration, particularly in the field of AI. Similarly, if there’s an issue with the data center in Taiwan, we would do the same. The cables will connect Singapore to the rest of the world and then move that distribution to the rest of Asia too. In the short term, we’re really pleased with the results on both sides -- what is catalyzed within India, but also the knowledge and the partnerships that it has helped us develop. Q: Google’s subsea cable projects, called Echo and Apricot, are expected to be launched in the next year or two. A: Without these very strong pipes linking the US with Asia, Asia with Europe and so on, many islands will not have access to the internet. A: Broadly, when it comes to things like antitrust, we are going to see regulation in the technology space. As it marks its 15th anniversary in Singapore Tuesday, the company said it’s deepening collaboration with the country, ranging from training 50,000 parents and children in online safety to an artificial-intelligence partnership with the government. “Asia, overall, sees technology as a way to leapfrog, catch up or accelerate,” Scott Beaumont, president of Google Asia Pacific, said in an interview in Singapore. We’ll work with the KCC (Korea Communications Commission) to help them understand that.

It is the first technology firm to partner the Singapore Government for such efforts. "We are excited about what's next for our partnership. A second centre came online in 2015. All three data centres are located in Jurong West. Mr Wong said there is a need for guard rails to manage the downsides of technology, including increased exposure to fake news, misinformation, online falsehoods and online harms. The tech giant is also deepening its commitment to Singapore after spending 15 years here, with the launch of a slew of initiatives from a programme to train 50,000 parents and children on online safety to a partnership to broaden the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in finance, sustainability and healthcare.

Speech by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong at Google for Singapore on 23 August 2022.
A big thank you to each and every Googler, all 3,000 of you here in Singapore, and I certainly look forward to growing and deepening this partnership together for many more years to come. And I am glad that Google has been a strong partner of Singapore in all of these aspects. All in all, we welcome Google as our partner in development and we thank you for your many contributions over the last 15 years in Singapore. In this regard, I am very glad that Google is on board with us on all of these areas. In the process of this journey, we realise that for every challenge and vulnerability we face, there are also new opportunities. We will enhance our role as a hub for trade, and for people and talent flows. So when we look ahead at our next bound of development, when we see challenges and uncertainties around us, we do not have to feel intimidated or overwhelmed. Because of our inherent vulnerabilities, we are constantly reminded that the world does not owe us a living – that we have ultimately to count on our wits and ingenuity to survive and thrive. We have also had to reach out to seniors, and other different groups in the community, to embrace and learn how to use technology. Because we are an improbable nation – we are a country that was never meant to be. In particular, Google has been a steadfast partner because, over the course of the last two and a half years of tackling the Covid-19 pandemic together, we have had to make significant adjustments to our lifestyles. And when you start using the internet, to do it well, you need a good search engine.
