Oleksandr Usyk bests Anthony Joshua by split decision to retain ... (ESPN)

Oleksandr Usyk retained his three heavyweight titles with a split decision victory over Anthony Joshua in their rematch on Saturday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

in June 2019 -- ESPN's Upset of the Year -- Joshua reclaimed the unified championship with a decision victory in the rematch six months later. Joshua, a 32-year-old from England, was attempting to become a three-time heavyweight champion. But before he could truly capitalize, Usyk turned the tables and responded with his best round of the fight. "This is already history," said Usyk, who like Joshua captured gold at the 2012 Olympics. Joshua threw 67 punches in the ninth and connected on 28, double his fight high. And that was the difference tonight. The 10th round was one of the best I've seen to turn a fight around. to all military members defending the country." "I want to thank everyone who prayed for me," said Usyk, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion. Fury claimed he was retired following an April victory over Dillian Whyte, only to announce a comeback earlier this month. After talks with Derek Chisora stalled, Fury reversed course and insisted again that he was retired. And if I'm not fighting Tyson Fury, I'm not fighting at all."

The Ukrainian retained his world heavyweight titles with an impressive display in which he saw off a spirited challenge to win 115-113 and 116-112 on two ...

In the end his victory was beyond question, something Joshua, in the most unique of fashion, also had to accept. Usyk responded with a couple of clubbing lefts in the fourth that forced Joshua back while also bewitching him with his characteristically slick and clever movement. He also dominated the final two rounds and, having largely impressed throughout the contest, it came as no shock when he was declared the winner, the only surprise being that it was via a split decision, with two of the judges delivering scores of 115-113 and 116-112 in his favour while the other deemed Joshua to be the winner via a score of 115-113. A dubious call but also one that spoke to the gutsy display Joshua delivered here and ultimately it would be a shame if that was overshadowed by his flashes of petulance after the fight. The seventh and eight round were largely even and then came the ninth as Joshua exploded into life, fully using his superior size and power to rock the man in front of him. But it was at that very moment Usyk showed his class, smashing Joshua back in the 10th with a with a big left hook and continuing to unload from there. And so, ultimately, attention turned to the Abdullah Sports City Arena, an impressive venue but unfitting for a contest of this magnitude given it only has capacity for 10,000 spectators. For Usyk, meanwhile, a 20th straight win across two divisions firmly establishes himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and puts him in prime position for a mouthwatering unification battle with Tyson Fury should the 35-year-old step out of his latest period of retirement. As was the case then, both fighters were asked in the buildup about how they could justify taking part in an event that, quite clearly, was part of the kingdom’s sportswashing strategy. Having appeared to exchange angry words with Usyk he then took to the microphone and, in front of a crowd of about 10,000 gathered at this venue, delivered a curious monologue. It was never going to work and he paid the price. This was meant to be Joshua’s night of redemption, when he regained the WBA, WBO and IBF titles Usyk had taken from him when the pair met in Tottenham 11 months ago.

He finally drove Usyk into the ropes and Joshua kept up the pressure, hammering at the Ukrainian with heavy hooks. He closed the fight like a champion, not letting up in the 12th round. In the eighth round, Joshua slammed a heartening left hook into the body. Joshua though got on the front foot, sending his right hook to the body and leaning on when the Ukrainian stepped in close. Usyk came back at him, probing at Joshua with a combination of punches. The challenger now, Joshua continued to press Usyk, much more willing to engage than in their first fight. Usyk looked to dissuade him, landing a countering left as Joshua came in. He was fighting to become a three-time heavyweight champion and knew his legacy depended on victory tonight. Joshua triggered an immediate rematch, determined to restore his place as a top-tier heavyweight. Formerly an undisputed champion down at cruiserweight, Usyk proved himself one of the best fighters pound-for-pound in the world today. Oleksandr Usyk Retains His Heavyweight Belts Via Split Decision (Sports Illustrated)

The Ukrainian boxer defeated Anthony Joshua to retain his three heavyweight titles.

Although Joshua still suffered the defeat in Saturday's bout, he fared better than he did in the initial fight mainly due to guidance from his new trainer, Robert Garcia. Usyk’s win and return to the boxing ring comes after he joined the front lines for Ukraine’s military when the country was invaded by Russia. Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) entered the fight with the better odds (-188) to win against Joshua (+170), according to

Oleksandr Usyk wasted no time in calling out who he hopes will be his next opponent after retaining his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight vs. Anthony Joshua.

"Because if AJ gets beat again off Usyk, then there's only gonna be one man to redeem this great fighting nation of the United Kingdom, and he goes by the name of Tyson Fury. "If it's half a (billion), then I won't say no, will I? The fighter recently vacated his Ring heavyweight title, suggesting he may indeed be calling it a career with a record of 32-0-1 with 23 knockouts. The man whom Usyk targeted, of course, is Tyson Fury, who has claimed to be retired after knocking out Dillian Whyte in the sixth round in an April 23 bout. Turning to Joshua, he said: “You’ve had to step up to carry the sport in our country. “It was one of the worst heavyweight title fights I have ever seen,” he said. Fury is also a ravenous boxing historian and knows an Usyk battle will give him the opportunity to unify the heavyweight championship. The road to becoming the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since 2000 is clear once again. Oleksandr Usyk has the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts.

Astonishingly Usyk rallied to answer that challenge from the 10th round on to the end of the bout. Usyk was boxing to represent Ukraine during the Russian invasion of his country. The mercurial man from Morecambe has frequently floated his own retirement but the early signs are that he won't demur from a sensational fight with Usyk. "That is what I'm dreaming of every day," the Ukrainian said gleefully. When Manny Pacquiao was knocked out cold in his last fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, he didn't fight the Mexican again. So far in his career he hasn't followed the typical path of progression in boxing. To that end he has to rebuild. Usually it's better to drop down a few levels, seek out the type of contests that they will be well assured of winning but which will give them rounds and experience to put the lessons they've learned into practice, to hone their skills and continue to develop their style. At one moment a member of his team held him back, at another he grabbed two world title belts and lobbed them out the ropes. If he was satisfied with all he had accomplished, he would never need to fight again. Joshua also maintained his own forward momentum and showed his grit to wade on through the counters that often caught him clean. His behaviour after the fight did him no credit and the following day
