'House of the Dragon' review: HBO's 'Game of Thrones' prequel ... (CNN)

HBO has followed the majesty of "Game of Thrones" with what might be called "games of throne" in "House of the Dragon," a series whose epic visual grandeur ...

"House of the Dragon" premieres Aug. In a way, that mantra mirrored the massive bet, and huge rewards, made and reaped by the show itself. Engineering a decade-long time jump halfway through the season, the story gradually becomes more compelling over the six episodes previewed, boasting moments as brutal and bloody as anything "Thrones" produced. Yet while HBO has clearly cracked open the piggy bank to ensure the look is as sumptuous as one would anticipate -- and composer Ramin Djawadi's lightly modified score goes a long way in rekindling the mood -- such series are built on characters. With his wife again pregnant, his teenage daughter Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), an accomplished dragon rider, realizes that her fate hinges on whether a son is born, as does her uncle's as another potential successor. That ratchets up the pressure to sink or swim -- or rather, soar or sputter -- strictly on its own terms.

As he and the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower (Ifans), trade glowering barbs across a royal conference table, I felt a stirring of the old dark magic. The first episode is especially disappointing—a lavish hour of CGI spectacle that smacks of money even as bets are hedged. As the ill-mannered Daemon Targaryen, brother to Viserys, he has a rock star’s swagger, truly awful blonde hair, and kicks life into the first episode whenever he appears. Viewers’ expectations are met—especially on the hyper-violence front—but the hour is pretty inert. I remember how ruthless—in the early going—David Benioff and Dan Weiss’s game-changing fantasy saga could feel, how startlingly dangerous, how impolite.

Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, the showrunners of the “Game of Thrones” prequel, discuss its fealty to the original and the new politics of brothel ...

It was such a generational event — people had a lot of expectation for where that series was going to end and what it was going to be. As this show progresses, the only bit of fantasy are the dragons and prophecy — and the dragons are kind of domesticated, they’ve got saddles. If you can’t crack that then you’re in trouble, because what you want people to do is say, “Oh, cool, they can do dragons,” and then move on. For example, there’s a big brothel scene in the premiere, which is synonymous with “Thrones,” but that show also received plenty of criticism for its handling and overuse of sex and nudity. SAPOCHNIK I would argue that we are standing on the shoulders of the previous show, which got people to see dragons as being part of this world. CONDAL I mean, that scene is right out of the book. SAPOCHNIK The problem in doing a brothel scene like they used to in “Game of Thrones” is what we would do is hire adult entertainment actors. Of all the stories that were kind of bandied around, it’s the closest one to the original show in tone. Much had to be the same because it’s still “Game of Thrones,” it’s still the same universe. Martin, the literary mastermind of the “Thrones” universe. We specifically set out to start the show as “Game of Thrones” and not to try and deviate. A director of many of the most spectacular “Thrones” installments, he is a showrunner on “Dragon” and directed several episodes, including Sunday’s series premiere.

Inspired by the exhibits one might see exploring the relics and traditions of real-life regimes such as ancient Rome or ancient Egypt, the HOTD exhibit features props, costumes, and specially-designed displays to highlight the history of Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors. “The Comic-con announcements and live panel spiked a wave of materials leading-up to the streaming premiere weekend.” In addition, among the promo partners, there’s a month-long pop-up experience for the series at the Natural History Museum of LA from Aug. The app’s TikTok viral mascot made an appearance at the HOTD Comic-Con activation, where he reminded attendees to complete their lessons with life-size push notifications and signs with dragon commands in High Valyrian. As the first episode of House of the Dragons finished, I asked myself whether it was as captivating as Game of Thrones' first. Even after six episodes of the show, House of the Dragon's scope is still mysterious. But the shining star of House of the Dragon's opening episodes is surely Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra. In contrast, House of the Dragon is all about the internecine conflict generated by different Targaryens all laying claim to the same Iron Throne. Much of Game of Thrones centered on the combative houses of Westeros vying to become the dominant clan. Only time, and the subsequent seasons it brings, will tell if House of the Dragon can scale that wall.

The world of George R.R. Martin returns this month to HBO, but this time, the battle on House of the Dragons is set long before Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon is set 172 years before the main Game of Thrones series, so we could also see Westeros descend into disarray and see other Houses rise in power and affluence as Targaryens begin to battle within, towards the planned end of the show. Martin has already stated that the series intends on making small changes to what we know about those events, but since he is heavily involved in the making of the show, the series has his stamp of approval. Of course, we know that eventually, Daenerys was able to bring dragons back to the realm, but the series is set at the time when dragons were a regular fixture for the Targaryens and those they ruled.

It’s important to have an experience like that in any line of work, but I would go out on a limb and say that I’m passionate about acting now in a way I never was when I started out.
