For any actor, the road to stardom is made up of not 'massy' films, but movies where he is a relatable person. From Shah Rukh Khan to Rajinikanth, ...

The Tamil remake of Venkatesh’s Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule, the film is directed by Mithran Jawahar, who has also directed Thiruchitrambalam. You can sum up the film in one line: a middle-class guy blackmails his wealthy girlfriend’s brother to give him money, with which he becomes a rich businessman so that he can provide a good life for his lover. Though his debut film Thulluvadho Ilami and Kadhal Kondein continue to have a cult following, Thiruda Thirudi took Dhanush to the masses. The best example of this phenomenon is [Dhanush](https://indianexpress.com/about/dhanush/)’s filmography. Despite several inconsistencies and politically incorrect elements, the film earned him a huge fanbase of youngsters, who could relate to this middle-class dude. Dhanush’s films seldom operate at the macro level.

Check out what moviegoers have to say about Dhanush's musical comedy Thiruchitrambalam after having caught the first day, the first show.

Derived from Mark Greaney's 2009 novel of the same name, the project stars Ryan Gosling as the CIA mercenary Court Gentry and Chris Evans. Thiruchitrambalam follows the life of a delivery driver, who lives with his strict policeman father and sassy grandfather. For the unversed, the film enjoys three female leads including Nithya Menen, Raashii Khanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar. The other one wrote on the micro-blogging site, "this should have been sequel to VIP…blockbuster #Thiruchitrambalam booking another show immediately." The fans got to see the versatile actor in the theatres after a very long gap and so were more thrilled for this musical comedy. Today, as the project reached cinema halls, they were seen lined up outside the ticket counters to witness this Mithran Jawahar's directorial.

Thiruchitrambalam Review (Movie Crow)

Thiruchitrambalam Review Ashwin Ram Thiruchitrambalam is directed by Mithran R Jawahar, with an ensemble cast of Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Raa.

Nithya Menen covers up for him, she is loud, bold and extremely likeable in the film, she has owned the next-door-girl character and ruled the film. How the relationship between Dhanush and Nithya Menen evolves is shown in a dull manner, the weakest segment of the flick. The drama between D and his dad is good, the way their relationship reforms is fine too. Although the drama is neat in some places, it fails to satisfy in the most important area which is the second half. Prakash Raj is his dad and things are not fine between them, after a dark incident in the past. The other two strong supporting characters are Nithya Menen who plays D’s best friend and Bharathiraja who is D’s grandad.

His work is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Ilayaraja, and the songs and background score elevate the mood of the movie on so many occasions. Thankfully, the simplistic writing and the regular use of highly enjoyable humour – courtesy Bharathiraja’s inimitable wit and one-liners - never lets a single moment get boring. As Thiru navigates through life trying to find love and purpose, he goes on a journey of self-realisation as he mends his bond with his father. Their friendship since childhood is the best example of why the friendship between a boy and girl is the best. The best part of the film is Dhanush and his bond with Nithya. It's a little slow in different parts but is enjoyable. Watching Bharatiraja's dance, getting emotional on various scenes and always having Thiru's back is something every youngster wants who has grandparents. While Thiru is struggling to cope up with the tragedies of his life, good things start happening to him, bringing light into his life. She doesn't have much to do in the plot. Even Raashii Khanna doesn't have a lot to offer. Thiruchitrambalam movie review: Dhanush, Nithya Menen shoulder endearing story about love, loss, repentance, understanding.

However, at the end of this promise, the film is over, and we never get to see if he is actually doing better. The film is also rather clever in not thrusting 'family values' into conflict with the romantic relationship. On the contrary, he goes out of his way to present every one of them as flawed individuals in their own right. To the film's credit, it is handled exceptionally well. In the 130-odd minutes of runtime, Thiruchitrambalam does pack a lot of emotions, and most of them land quite well. She fights with love — the scene where she reprimands Pazham's father for hitting him is all sorts of charming. The moment is heartbreaking, but the 'analysis' after it is done with humour. He chips in with inane yet necessary wisdom from time to time — in life, being a burden on someone is as joyful as bearing someone else's, he says at one point. His melancholy is understated, his anger is familiar, and his quest for love is almost silly. To the film’s credit, it is handled exceptionally well. The eponymous hero, Thiruchitrambalam, fondly known as Pazham (Dhanush), is a food delivery executive at a company called Doink. For over two hours of runtime, he looks for love elsewhere until the inevitable hits him.

'Thiruchitrambalam' movie review: Dhanush and Nithya Menon are ... (The Hindu)

Mithran R Jawahar puts a delightful spin on the Velai Illa Pattadhari template. Yet, this is a film that has a charming innocence at its core.

The “rom-com” is just a layer and never at the forefront. This is a very basic human emotion and sometimes in movies, the basics are just about fine. But even the “fight” is still within the framework of the screenplay. There is so much sadness in her eyes yet there is so much hope. I, in fact, felt nervous for an old wound that comes back in the form of a fight sequence. In fact, it is hard to say if Thiruchitrambalam is a rom-com or a slice of life drama on domestic life. Sure, there are bumps in the tone especially for a portion in the second half. That is what the film is about: suppressed emotions. This is a film that has a charming innocence at its core. Yet, it is also a slice of life drama about letting go, powered by a terrific Bharathiraja and Prakash Raj. Yet, the film is not as painfully sad as you might think. There is something sombre and lifeless about the rose-tinted frames of Mithran J Jawahar’s Thiruchitrambalam that screams sorrow and grief.

Thiruchitrambalam movie review: The Dhanush-Nithya Menen film is a heartening rom-com that serves as a much-needed break from all the pan-Indian noise.

It is also a gentle reminder that you don’t need a lot of guns to blow the audiences’ minds. When filmmakers are widening the focus to get all of India to the theatres, director Mithran Jawahar’s Thiruchitramabalam treats you to an extreme close-up of everyday people and their everyday problems. She is a bundle of joy and shows how a good performance can elevate a simple script. Instead, he admits that he is a burden, but a good one. [Dhanush](https://indianexpress.com/about/dhanush/) plays Thiruchitramabalam (Pazham for short), a food delivery guy for a service portal called Doink – if it sounds funny, it is meant to be. When filmmakers are slowly forgetting the art of telling romantic love stories, this serves as a recent reminder that the stakes in a film need not always be larger-than-life, it can be as simple as a guy trying to overcome his trauma and grief to find the love of his life.

Thiruchitrambalam review: A wholesome, enjoyable romcom with ... (The News Minute)

What a relief to see such a simple, well-told story in Tamil cinema after so long! Nourishing and no fuss, just like a pazham.

People do go to airports and traverse continents, but they don’t get on an international flight at the drop of a hat with an instant visa in their passport. In his early years, Dhanush built his career on films that appealed to young men without class privilege; films that spoke of their aspirations to climb the social ladder and also win the ultimate ‘prize’ – a fair-skinned, upper class girl. The representation of rich youth, though, is quite stereotypical – they’re shown to be drinking in the theatre and bullying Thiru in a scene that’s designed to evoke pity. Also, I was hoping for the film to steer clear of some old-fashioned cliches about man-woman relationships that would have made it stand out in the romcom genre. Though I could see that the role was written by a man in the extra chirpiness that Shobana is forced to carry, Nithya’s natural ease on screen makes her adorable rather than annoying. It’s a small detail that shows the attention paid to structuring the characters. It’s also a good idea to make Shobana Telugu instead of Tamil; it makes the casting choice work better. Prakash Raj has played the angry Appa in so many films that it’s a marvel the man is still able to bring variations to the role. How I wish we got to see more of Bharathiraja, the actor, in our movies! In contrast to where Thiru lives are the swanky apartment buildings where he delivers food. So, does ‘pazham’ become a ‘puli’ (tiger) in the end? His name – Thiruchitrambalam – is a mouthful but his nickname Pazham (fruit) is no better.

With a solid Dhanush and Nithya Menen at the centre of things, it is impressive that the makers mostly resist easy temptation to sink into melodrama, ...

The other important relationship in the film is that of Pazham and his grandfather (a loveable Bharathiraja also named Thiruchitrambalam). Instead, you get the warm scene of Shobana reassuring Pazham of his value, and even in this scene, she quickly moves on and says she was just joking about his worth. Shobana is a proxy-mother, a proxy-sister, in the liberties she takes with Pazham, and in the platonic chemistry, she radiates when with him. Oh, and I didn’t really care for the film suggesting that riding a Bullet, as opposed to a Scooty, somehow makes one manlier. All this interest in the old—and in how they belong to a family—reminded me of Dhanush’s directorial, Power Paandi. And in any case, I didn’t think that Shobana seemed into Pazham, or that the film established any real emotional reason for why she might feel even a sliver of romance towards him. In the case of Pazham and his traumatic past, he already has a sister-mother-shaped void in his life, and she fits into these roles perfectly. The ‘mass’ in Thiruchitrambalam is in becoming a better person, the heroism is in beating up… There, he speaks about the struggles of the middle-class; here, he speaks about the struggles of a single man. A scene that comes to mind is of Shobana storming into the room of Pazham’s cop-father (Prakash Raj) and rebuking him for his misbehaviour. Watch her bite back with ‘poda’ and ‘podi’, in a way that’s sure to remind us of those we love. In fact, this film too, in a sense, channels the best of VIP.

And in a matter of three weeks, Nithya Menen has put up two first rate performances that couldn’t be more divergent—a wordless mastery in 19(1)(a) and the garrulous but contemplative Shobana here, someone who is cried over by her mother but uncared for by most. The central conflict in the first half is between Thiruchitrambalam aka Pazham (Dhanush) and his father Neelakandan (Prakash Raj). Dhanush in a space of less than a year has given us two of the most infectious, joyful and jaunty song acting pieces, Atrangi Re’s Little Little and another in Megham Karukkatha in Thiruchitrambalam. In Mithran’s latest film, Thiruchitrambalam, (also written by him) it is a contest to determine who is more disapproving of the other—the father or the son. They are all—some in subplots—about winning the love and approval of the father. Or the follow up Aadukalam in which the father figure ends up becoming the antagonist and Velraj’s Velailla Pattadhari where the father paints a disappointed, lonesome picture.

Thiruchitrambalam is a testament to the power of classic storytelling. Shobana is a tricky character to play — she could have easily slipped into a caricature of a ‘bubbly’ female character, but that does happen in Thiruchitrambalam — not on Menen’s watch. But retelling the same story (of a classic romantic-comedy) with warm simplicity and brilliant actors is always comforting. Don’t be surprised if you miss her in the scenes she is not a part of — that’s how impactful her portrayal is. The best aspect of Thiruchitrambalam is, perhaps, its simplicity and commitment to the world it is based on.
