Pep Guardiola sanctioned the summer sale of Gabriel Jesus from Man City to Arsenal. After a very bright start, Liverpool could stand to benefit in two ways.

Jesus may not always have been massive on output, but he was always a useful cog in the system. Firmino played 45 minutes of the Copa América 2021 final, which ended in defeat to Lionel Messi’s Argentina. But since then, he has been out of the international picture. It is clear that Manchester City have lost a very good player; Guardiola was under-utilising him before, but he was still good for solid numbers of goal contributions every season. Talk of a title challenge against Liverpool and Manchester City is surely premature, but Arsenal have started the season extremely well. Jesus was a useful squad player at Manchester City, but it is fair to say that the manager never got the best out of him. Sure enough, out of the shadows at Manchester City, he has already emerged as a central figure at Arsenal. His quality has been apparent from the very start, with a goal two minutes into his pre-season debut.
