Slashfilm.com almost called Laal Singh Chaddha better than Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump in adaptation of Winston Groom's 1986 book of the same name. The review by the portal read: "Laal Singh Chaddha might still be as fitfully mawkish as "Gump" in its tendency toward brazen sentimentality, but is a film more deliberately rooted in philosophies of gentleness. Knowing the major plot points and overall arc of “Forrest Gump” does not dull this version’s impact in the slightest, as screenwriter Atul Kulkarni builds out a rich world for Laal that feels wholly independent from Forrest’s.” IndieWire called Laal Singh Chaddha a “faithful adaptation” and said it leans into specific cultural influences, deep history, and lovely visuals. Brought tears to my eyes by the end of it and I was really, really happy to watch the show. The film starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya, will release in theatres on Thursday.

Laal Singh Chaddha is an official Hindi adaptation of Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks. Indie Wire’s Proma Khosla in her review, wrote, “Instead of a box of chocolates or the obvious Indian equivalent, the film takes things a step further, adding strong depth and resonance to what could otherwise have been an unremarkable adaptation.” She added, “Laal Singh Chaddha measures its emotional beats tactically, deploying poignant punches sporadically throughout.” Fred Topel of United Press International is also impressed with the adaptation as he mentioned in his review, “Laal Singh Chaddha is faithful to Forrest Gump from the floating feather to the plot structure.

Ahead of its release, Laal Singh Chaddha is facing considerable backlash online, with much of the criticism being levelled at Aamir Khan himself.

Here is a brief snapshot of the social media backlash the movie and Aamir Khan himself are facing online- There is no provision under CRPC to demolish the house of an accused person as is being done in UP Finally, there are those online who are simply content to see the apparent success of the campaign to boycott the movie and 'cancel' Aamir Khan. The official Hindi remake of Hollywood film Forrest Grump, the movie will release in theatres on August 11. The movie itself aside, a number of comments online have focussed on Aamir Khan himself, promoting a ban on Khan and his movies based on his beliefs, perceived or otherwise, and his past actions. Aamir Khan's new movie Laal Singh Chaddha is already facing a wave of backlash ahead of its release with reports of Haridwar seers appealing to people to not watch the movie on account of Khan's perceived 'Hindu phobia'. Online, the movie is already facing a social media movement that is hellbent on boycotting the movie and even Bollywood itself.

Laal Singh Chaddha review – a 'Hindi Forrest Gump', no more, no less (The Guardian)

Director Advait Chandan is too literal in his adaptation of the 90s classic but finds a warmth and political honesty the original lacks.

Few could blame Khan for playing safe in the face of renewed personal attacks and weaponised hashtags. Making the amputee pal a reformed fundamentalist (Manav Vij) is interesting, although the hands-across-the-temple-aisle editorial feels watered down compared with Khan’s puckish religious satire PK. Laal Singh Chaddha is far from the worst Hindification of a Hollywood property: it consolidates the basic competency that Chandan demonstrated in Secret Superstar without achieving the genuine magic that the earlier film conjured from well-worn material. Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan’s “Hanks-ish likability” is tested to the limit by his new project with his Secret Superstar director Advait Chandan: a Hindi remake of Forrest Gump, late 20th-century Hollywood’s pre-eminent Rorschach blot.

Laal Singh Chaddha: A 'Phipty-Phipty' Approach to Crucial – and ... (The Wire)

Aamir Khan sometimes falls into his familiar clichés, but when he gets to the grip of the character, he shines.

Towards the end in fact, when the country recedes in the background, Laal looks like a disconnected ghost, unwittingly complementing the persona of his long-distance runner. The new name is a masterstroke – appropriately Indian and charming (I won’t reveal it here, for you must find out yourself) – but makes little sense in the world of hard business. The writing regains its purpose and momentum through a long Kargil War stretch featuring a twist missing in the original. It’s fittingly from a film that, challenging the status quo, perhaps wouldn’t even have been conceived today: “Thoda khao, thoda phenko.” There’s a pensive Khan (Dhobi Ghat), an eye-dilating Khan (3 Idiots), a stunned-eye Khan (PK), and so on. The movie takes a sharp turn from here due to two broad reasons: a) Khan enters the film for the first time in its chronological sweep, and b) it starts taking a “phipty-phipty” approach. Worse, the age difference between the actor and his character swings from two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half decades – it’s not just sloppy but embarrassing. It’s preceded by a charming comedic bit, where Laal teaches Shahrukh Khan (playing himself) his signature, iconic pose – a hat-doff to the Tom Hanks movie where Forrest inspired Elvis Presley. These choices are sharp, recognising the original and embracing the local. Then there’s Khan. An impressive actor with a versatile filmography, he sometimes gets ‘stuck’ in a mode that lasts the entire movie. In 1983, Laal proposes marriage to his friend, Rupa, who gets distracted by the sounds of crackers – celebrating the country’s World Cup win – leaving him alone with his question. By making a Sikh man the centre of their film, they intend to tell the story of a marginalised India, a wounded India. It devotes 40-odd minutes, around one-fourth of the total runtime, on the boy, shunning any hurry to bring in the superstar. The Aamir Khan-starrer chooses, to borrow a phrase from actor Johnny Walker, a “phipty-phipty” approach.

So we're not really testing to see that a person can act or not, but really how suitable the person is for the part. It took a decade for Khan to get the movie rights. And it's a film that stayed with me."

The Devil's Advocate: Laal Singh Chaddha might unwittingly further ... (Firstpost)

On paper, nothing really feels inspired or out-of-the-box in Laal Singh Chaddha, foremost of which is the role of a halfwit being embodied by a Sardar.

On the contrary, Punjabis have inherited trauma, a politically charged environment and the constant defacement of a culture that is on the inside, possibly the warm and grounded. But leave it to Bollywood’s tokenism and all Punjabis are ever good for is intoxicated outbursts, a kink for breaking the law and the lack of a particular vein that prevents them from taking life seriously. Ranbir Kapoor’s Rocket Singh is an empathetic portrayal of a middle-class sardar trying to survive. On paper, nothing sounds inspired about Laal Singh Chadha. The film is an official remake of a divisive classic that really shouldn’t have been remade considering the original continues to divide audiences and the critics alike. But of all the details that some ambitious pen put to paper, the least has been the sight of a low IQ halfwit being embodied by a sardar. The industry’s last decade has been led by popular, franchise films that infantilise sardars and Punjabis in ways that seem to echo Bollywood’s imagination.

Let us not even go into the implausibility of how a trained Indian Army soldier cannot differentiate between his own brothers in the Army and the enemies.

Sure, there are the usual Bollywood mouthpieces singing praises for the movie, but since the movie releases just ahead of a long weekend, it may even pick up the pace and get some commercial success. After the opening, it seems the movie has taken liberties with the storyline to peddle Aamir Khan’s usual anti-Hindu propaganda that he is known for. The good terrorist is shown doing Namaz, (Lt Dan was an atheist and he later made peace with God, that was one of the best sub narratives in Forrest Gump) and our Laal Singh declares that Puja Path is useless, they only spread ‘malaria’. And thus, Gary Sinise’s legendary, historic character from Forrest Gump becomes an Islamist terrorist, a ‘good’ person apparently because that is what Aamir Khan and Atul Kulkarni the writer wants Indians to swallow. India Today’s review of the movie has called out Aamir Khan’s bad acting performance. Aamir Khan’s comeback film Laal Singh Chaddha has been given a thumbs down by several critics.

After a spate of box office duds coming from Bollywood, a lot is riding on the fate of Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan.

While Bollywood’s performance has been dismal, four successive super-hits from the South—Pushpa: The Rise Part-1, RRR, KGF: Chapter 2 and Vikram (to a much smaller extent in Hindi as Vikram: Hitlist)—have grossed more than Rs 3,000 crore worldwide, including nearly Rs 800 crore in Hindi net collections. On the other hand, Raksha Bandhan is estimated to open with Rs 9 crore on day one and may end up reporting lifetime collection of Rs 80-90 crore. We maintain that Hindi Box Office is slated to decline 22 per cent (vs pre COVID levels) in Q2FY23, as content has been below par so far and we are already the end of first half of the quarter, with no film reporting a positive surprise,” he said. His only hit during this period has been Sooryavanshi (Nov 5, 2021), which was made on a production budget of about Rs 160 crore and earned a net lifetime collection of Rs 196 crore in India and Rs 295 crore gross worldwide collections, according to Bollywood Hungama. Elara Capital’s vice president Karan Taurani says expects Laal Singh to have a stronger opening with Rs 16 crore, and a lifetime collection of Rs 150-160 crore. Seven of the top 10 grossers in this span were from the South, pegs Ormax Media data. Trade analyst Komal Nahta says they are both costly, big-banner and well-mounted films, which are coming when Bollywood is reeling under the pressure of losses. Raksha Bandhan, on the other hand, saw advance booking of 35,000 tickets sold for Day 1 at the box office with a total collection of approx. The film is produced by Zee Studios and director Aanand L. Rai at an approximate budget of over Rs 70 crore. In terms of all India sales, the film, which is an official remake of the hit Hollywood film Forrest Gump, has sold approximately 57,000 tickets for the opening day. For last few weeks, the film was facing social media backlash and boycott calls because of old statements of Aamir Khan, who has also produced the film along with Viacom18 studios. Over the next eight days, there are four holidays owing to Raksha Bandhan, a long weekend including Independence Day, followed by Janmashtami and Parsi New Year which may be partial holidays.

The one thing working for the two films is positive critical reception, which both have received. The advance bookings of Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan are way below expectations... Trade analysts say the figures should improve over the weekend but 60-70 percent occupancy looks unlikely, which means the films will struggle to post huge opening weekend numbers. Now, sources say that the opening day first shows have seen remarkably low attendance for both films. This release day (August 11) was thought by many to help revive the Hindi film industry with two big releases in Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. The signature brilliance of Aamir Khan seems to be missing in the dialogue-led scenes, but he puts his strengths to test with the scenes where there are no dialogues. Lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya seems to be a little lost in the film. The film’s director Advait Chandan, who has been a long-time collaborator of Aamir in different capacities, has done justice to Kulkarni’s script. The script has been penned by actor Atul Kulkarni, who has worked with Aamir in ‘Rang De Basanti’, and is his dear friend. Much like its original, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ tells the story of a simple man and how he sails through life with his goodwill and values. His success ratio only adds to his massive credibility as the superstar who rarely fails, barring of course in few exceptions such ‘Mela’ and ‘Thugs of Hindostan’.

This Indian adaptation of “Forrest Gump” doubles down on its Pollyanna hero, substituting different historical touchstones.

(Laal is Sikh but only barely grasps these violent events.) The famous box of chocolates is reimagined, sweetly so: life is now like a golgappa (a crisp fried treat). On the train, Laal narrates his life experiences to a receptive bunch of listeners. The bus stop bench of Forrest Gump is replaced here with a train compartment - rail voyages are known to fuel many a timeless story in this diverse country. This lovely sequence - a wonderfully localised twist that is bound to bring an unadulterated smile to every lip - stands in for the Elvis Presley encounter that Forrest Gump has with the future King of Rock & Roll in his mom's boarding house. The film, adapted from Eric Roth's original 1990s screenplay, indigenizes the plot in interesting ways and finds points of departure that, more often not, strike a chord. India is in the midst of a level of social and political turmoil that it has rarely encountered since it gained independence. Since Laal Singh Chaddha is an official remake, the storyline is known. It is the changes, minor and not-so-minor, that keep one's interest alive. Laal shakes off his leg braces as a boy when chased by a trio of bullies on their bicycles. At the personal level, too, he is undaunted by the challenges that life throws at him. That is exactly what the conservative-minded Forrest Gump had attempted to do (with a great degree of success) in the US of A in the decades following the disastrous Vietnam War and the fallout of the Watergate scandal. But given its overall intent, Laal Singh Chaddha does serve a significant purpose: it celebrates humanity in the face of hate and discord. Reworking a 1994 Hollywood drama centred on the Vietnam War into an Indian story that pans out over several decades later wouldn't have been a cakewalk.

Laal Singh Chaddha movie review: Aamir Khan's Forrest Gump ... (CNBCTV18)

Starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Mona Singh, Laal Singh Chaddha is an old-world, large-hearted film that preaches goodness and kindness above ...

But the film is meandering, exhausting. But considering that it took Khan 14 years to put together the film and bring it to screen, he could have spared some time to make it more relevant to today’s milieu and cultural conversation. Singh — who has previously worked with both Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in their 2009 film 3 Idiots — is subliminal as Laal’s mother who instills in him strong self-esteem, self-reliance, and an unshakable will to do good, be good. Ek Omkar plays in the background as he meticulously ties the turban around his head. Starring Aamir Khan as Laal, it is the official Hindi remake of Robert Zemeckis’s 1994 Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, which starred Tom Hanks in the titular role and bagged him an Academy Award for best actor. In fact, his histrionics are so exaggerated — add to it a constant stupefied expression plastered on his face — he comes across as deranged.

The business of Laal Singh Chaddha might drop on Friday, and the fate of the film will depend on how well it trends on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Independence Day). With this start, a big total is ruled out and now it’s all about reaching a face-saving number in the longer run. In the morning, it seemed as if Laal Singh Chaddha would end around the 10-crore mark, but the biz did pick up towards evening shows in the multiplexes. The Advait Chandan directed Laal Singh Chaddha with Aamir Khan in lead has opened much below the expectations.

Laal Singh Chaddha collected Rs. 10.75 cr nett on its first day, which is a fifth of his last big ticket release Thugs Of Hindostan. The numbers in East Punjab have been excellent but the film has not performed optimally, elsewhere. It was an extremely poor day at the box office for the two big Bollywood films that released in theatres yesterday, namely Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan. Both films were expected to draw audience to theatres on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan, but failed miserably. Both films ran at an average occupancy of 25 percent throughout the day and this is despite coming on the same day, which should ideally result in higher occupancies.

Laal Singh Chaddha is better than Forrest Gump - here's why ... (Firstpost)

Without touching the inviolable essence of innocence in Forrest Gump, Laal Singh Chaddha outdistances the original, not because Aamir Khan runs faster than ...

It is interesting to see how the original has been adapted to the Indian milieu. The making of ‘Tur Kalleyan’ from its music to the video was long and overtaxing at times. And Laal names the lingerie business after Rupa. Yes, the Rupa brand of underclothes is owned by Laal Singh Chaddha. So is Shah Rukh Khan’s signature step with his hands stretched out. Atul Kulkarni’s screenplay takes us through stretches of Indian history encountering milestones ranging from the 1974 Sikh Riots to Sushmita Sen being crowned Miss Universe. It is a clever engrossing adaptation and one that leaves the original behind. He believes if God has given you more money than you need, then you must pass it on to the needy. It just gets to you pretty much from the start when we meet the over-protected little Laal struggling with a leg disorder that doctors say, could leave him crippled. Except what his mother (played by Mona Singh who is no patch on Sally Field in the original) has taught him: to ingratiate himself to everyone he meets. Soon, the entire compartment is hooked to Laal’s narration. And I don’t mean just the panoramic sweep of Nature’s bounty that cinematographer Satyajit Pande brings to every frame. The makers of Forrest Gump should be more than happy with what writer Atul Kulkarni, director Advait Chandan and Aamir Khan have done to the original. But it is Rupa, played by the ethereal Kareena Kapoor Khan, for whom Laal’s pure-as-gold heart beats. But here is a remake, a re-creation if you will, that actually surpasses the original.

Laal Singh Chaddha becomes Aamir Khan's lowest opener in 13 ... (OpIndia)

Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha has tanked at the box office with its opening day collection being abysmal. | OpIndia News.

YouTuber and film enthusiast Dewansh Singh Rajput published a video review of the film on his YouTube channel in which he made some worrisome allegations against the film. According to Bollywood pundits, an Aamir Khan movie should have ideally had an opening of Rs 30 crores. Earlier, when PR agencies were doing on overdrive trying to show an uptick in advance booking, Taran Adarsh had tweeted sounding a warning that people should not believe the hype that has been created. The movie is said to be doing better in Delhi and Punjab but has failed miserably in the rest of the country. The movie’s opening and just how badly it did is evidenced by the fact that the opening was worse than the Kabir Khan directorial, 83, and the Farhad Samji film, Bachchhan Paandey. On the other hand, the movie did not even come close to opening days for movies that have been mega hits this year. It is reported to be the lowest opening that an Aamir Khan movie has seen in the past 13 years.

Both the films also faced a section of social media’s boycott calls, which both Aamir and Akshay have addressed. Laal Singh Chaddha, according to BOI, is performing similarly to December’s large-scale sports drama 83, which made around Rs 14 crore, but underperformed at the box office because of a new wave of the pandemic. Raksha Bandhan was one of the many Akshay Kumar projects that were completed over the pandemic with breakneck speed. Box Office India says that Laal Singh Chaddha made Rs 10.75 crore on its opening day, which was described in the report as ‘shocking’. Bollywood Hungama said this will be the lowest opening for Aamir Khan in the past 13 years. It was a poor opening day at the box office for Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, the epic remake of Hollywood hit Forrest Gump that released on Thursday amid calls for a boycott. The final box office numbers are awaited.

'Laal Singh Chaddha' review: The triumph of the emotional fool: ... (The New Indian Express)

Aamir Khan is a man of emotion. In his interviews, just before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, he revealed how he enjoys a film.

Another performance that stands out is Kareena’s Rupa. On paper, her character might lack the layering Robin Wright’s Jenny had, but she attempts to elevate the role. And yet, Aamir Khan is not the greatest thing in an Aamir Khan film. Laal, unlike Forrest, is a mere bystander and not a catalyst of various political events. The floating feather finds Laal on a train, which is the perfect spot for over-enthusiastic storytellers looking for an audience. The film covers all the checkpoints of a Hindi mass entertainer while keeping its integrity intact. In his interviews, just before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, he revealed how he enjoys film.

Laal Singh Chaddha movie review: It's not just the pace of the film which is the trouble. It is also, centrally and crucially, Sardar Laal Singh Chaddha ...

It’s only when Laal Singh Chaddha leaves the dull shackles of his mannerisms, and hits the road, passing by some of the most spectacular sights that India possesses– the intense blue Ladakh lake, the shimmering Himalayan night, a scenic Southern coastline– that he starts to grow on me. And Kareena Kapoor Khan, as Rupa, the love of Laal’s life, desperate to put her painful past behind, infuses real feeling into her part. When we first come upon Laal Singh Chaddha, he is in a train, holding on to a box of gol-gappa, or pani-puri, and a backpack full of memories. It is also, centrally and crucially, Sardar Laal Singh Chaddha himself. But it is the train which gathers speed, not Laal’s meandering tale, which only kicks in towards the last half hour. Soon, though, Laal succeeds in drawing in the disinterested woman across him, and then the entire compartment.
