Heavy rain in Seoul floods train stations, submerges vehicles: Report (CNA)

Several areas in Seoul were left flooded on Monday (Aug 8) as heavy rain battered South Korea's capital, submerging vehicles and prompting evacuations.

A public safety message sent to residents in Seoul at about 11.10pm local time (10.10pm Singapore time) warned of potential landslides. Seoul received 90.5mm of rain as of 8pm local time. Twitter user @evh5150 also said that there was a power outage in the Gangnam area.

Subway service from Nodeul Station on Line 9 to Sapyeong Station was suspended. On Seoul Subway Line 1, Yeongdeungpo Station was flooded, and subway operation was delayed. A landslide occurred due to torrential rains, and a shaft near an apartment building in Sadang-dong, Dongjak-gu, collapsed. The Seoul Transportation Corporation said, "The train is passing without stopping because rainwater has flowed into the waiting area of Isu Station on Line 7." Seven people remain missing amid fears of further damage with torrential rain forecast in some parts on Wednesday.

It said it expected heavy rainfall in the central region of the country to continue until at least Wednesday. Rainstorms also pounded North Korea, where authorities issued heavy rain warnings for the southern and western parts of the country. Rainfall of more than 100mm an hour was recorded in Seoul, surrounding areas of Gyeonggi province and the port city of Incheon on Monday night, according to the Yonhap news agency.

By the time rescue workers arrived, the family was dead. One of the victims had down's syndrome. They had already reported their house was flooding the day before. In the city of Gwangju in the Geyonggi province, one person was found under the wreckage of a collapsed bus station while another died after being buried in a landslide. They were later found dead. The Yonhap news agency said the three included a teenager and that the family had reported that they were trapped in their basement home on Monday evening.

As of Tuesday morning, authorities were still working to reopen the stations. The city recorded 141.5 millimeters (5.57 inches) of rain per hour -- the highest rate since authorities began keeping records. Heavy rain is expected to continue on Tuesday, with up to 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rain per hour in some regions, according to the country's Meteorology Administration.
