Premier League: 10 things to look out for on the opening weekend (The Guardian)

Arsenal look to avoid another opening-day stinker, Everton look toothless and will Jürgen Klopp start Darwin Núñez?

This has been a difficult summer for Leicester. Kasper Schmeichel has left, the futures of Wesley Fofana and James Maddison are up in the air, and the Foxes are the only Premier League club yet to sign a player. A club close to qualifying for the Champions League in 2020 and 2021 found last season did not go entirely to plan, with Brendan Rodgers’ side finishing eighth, six points off a Europa League place. A lot of it is centred around the incisiveness of Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio on the counter, and while West Ham looked short of creativity during pre-season that is likely to be less of a problem against City. After all, David Moyes will not be making plans for his team to dominate possession. The Portuguese’s decision to go awol was surely premeditated as a latest ploy in the push to leave a club there is supposedly adoration for. Erik ten Hag’s first Manchester United XI for a Premier League game is not expected to include Cristiano Ronaldo due to the wantaway striker’s lack of match-fitness. After hosting Aston Villa, Bournemouth next travel to Manchester City before facing Arsenal at home and Liverpool at Anfield. A point at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday may be necessary to avoid the ominous prospect of losing their first four league games and seeing their survival hopes potentially begin to wash away along the south coast by the end of August. Villa fans will be expecting greater things than last season’s 14th place, and if Steven Gerrard’s players are intent on making large strides up the table, picking up three points in games like this should be a must in their hunt for a first top-half finish since promotion in 2019. Conte’s system is based on getting the best out of his front men, and Kane intends to embrace the expectations. When he was denied his wish, he laboured, scoring only one league goal before the middle of December. He rediscovered his groove under Conte, who joined at the start of November, to finish with 17 in the competition and he carries momentum into the opening game against Southampton, having had a proper pre-season this time. Instead the 30-year-old has made it crystal clear he intends to be playing the first-team football that will all but guarantee him a place on England’s World Cup bound flight to Doha in November. Accordingly the consensus is that Howe will start Pope ahead of Dubravka on Saturday. That, in turn, is set to upset the Slovakia goalkeeper and his agent, who has reiterated that his client is too good to be anyone’s understudy. If pre-season is a time for optimism, it has been particularly pronounced at Tottenham. First Antonio Conte committed to the project, then the club made quick and targeted signings. The goalscorer is gone, the England international is out injured for the next six weeks and Rondón is suspended. The Uruguay forward started on the bench when Liverpool beat City in the Community Shield last weekend, but he appeared to be on the same wavelength as his new teammates after coming on in the second half.

Working in England’s top tier of football has always been a high pressure situation, with managers losing jobs at the slightest hint of non-performance. Palace easily defeated the opposition in the previous season by a 3-0. Richarlison, Ivan Perisic, and Yves Bissouma, a seasoned Croatian player, and other players with Premier League experience have all been added by Tottenham. Since Patrick Vieira, a fantastic player at Arsenal, is in the leadership of the Palace team, Arsenal followers will see him on the opposing side. The world's most popular football league will kick off at Selhurst Park when Crystal Palace hosts Arsenal this weekend. Erling Haaland's deal to join Manchester City has been one of European football's most frequently discussed moves this summer.

The Reds have thrown financial caution to the wind to become one of the summer’s big spenders in a bid to retain their Premier League status going into next season. Preparation in terms of transfers for the new season has been ad hoc, with The Cherries waiting until August to pay a fee for anyone. After a massive overhaul in 2018 and a host of loans in Fulham's 2020 premiership season backfired, Silva will hope a mixture of the old and the new can keep his side out of the bottom three. The Cottagers and The Cherries have both been regulars in the Premier League in recent years, with Fulham known as a “yo-yo” club from the way they constantly go up and down between the divisions. Having had time to blood his team through a year in the Championship and having brought in defensive reinforcements, he will be hoping he can finally make Fulham’s status as a first division team stick. Fulham and Bournemouth are back in the big time after securing the automatic promotion spots in the Championship last season.

It could be a tough start for Forest and they could finish anywhere from tenth in the league to dead last and it wouldn't be surprising to me. While he should score quite a few goals for the Hammers this season, I'd love to know the story that his tattoos have to tell. It will be another strong season for Salah and the Reds and while not attending the World Cup with Egypt will be a disappointment, it will also make for a strong second half of the season where Salah is rested while others aren't. With Christian Pulisic needing to fight for minutes at Chelsea, Chris Richards being in a similar position with Crystal Palace, and Antonee Robinson fighting an uphill battle with Fulham all eyes are on Leeds United's American duo of Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson. Adams is replacing Kalvin Phillips who moved on to Manchester City. Leeds need to fill the massive hole that he left in the squad and Marc Roca and Adams have been tasked with that. Coming off of a breakout year that saw him score 11 goals and assist seven more in Premier League play, Arsenal have surrounded Saka with more quality so that he can make the attack tick. Vieira is building something special in South London and Eze's performances will be at the center of making it work this season. Steve Cooper has a tough job getting their new signings to click, but it also has to be an easier job than last year when he took over the team during the season and got them promoted from the Championship. On paper, Forest have made impressive additions but they'll need to ensure that Taiwo Awoniyi and Brennan Johnson are supported well in the attack. The Premier League is back and with that, it's a good time to gaze into a crystal ball of what may happen in the league while everyone is still on level footing. The only players to best him in the past five seasons are Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane. Vardy is struggling with injuries while he ages while Kane is no longer the most feared attacker on Spurs as that title now shifts to Heung-Min Son who tied Salah for the Golden Boot last year. Sven Botman and Nick Pope are significant upgrades while making the addition of Matt Targett permanent is also a solid addition for them. The biggest point in Nunez's favor over the summer's more heralded move of Erling Haaland to Manchester City is that I see him getting more starts in an attack that can match City step for step. Even if he drifts out to the wing, Salah is able to fill the space in the middle, making Liverpool that much more dangerous.

Premier League predictions: Mirror Football pick champions, top four ... (Mirror.co.uk)

The new Premier League season is upon us, and we asked our wide team of writers, reporters and editors just what they think will happen at home and abroad.

It will be City in a canter and I suspect they might break that Champions League jinx for good measure. Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United will all be stronger, but still short of winning the title. Manchester City won the Premier League title last season, but to finish with just one trophy the campaign was seen as somewhat of a disappointment. The Dutchman needed the chance to completely remould a squad that slumped to United's worst-ever finish in the Premier League era last year; the three new recruits United have currently sourced will not cut it. I do fancy them to win a trophy though and they should retain their Champions League berth. The top four race looks tight with Arsenal much-improved and Manchester United entering a new era. Tottenham look strong under Antonio Conte but I struggle to see them keeping pace with City and Liverpool for a whole season. Manchester City look formidable - the only question mark is how their squad copes after returning from the World Cup. But with the depth they have available, it’s hard to see it being a major issue. While 99 goals last season was ridiculous, Haaland will lift Pep Guardiola's side to a new level and that's why they'll win the Premier League and Champions League. I've backed Manchester City to win another domestic treble. Manchester City have won four of the last five Premier League trophies and their dominance is showing no signs of waning. As far as the cups go, Arsenal are surely due an FA Cup after missing out for two whole seasons.

Premier League predictions 2022-23: Tottenham to rule London but ... (Evening Standard)

The Premier League is back and starting a week earlier than usual due to the mid-season disruption caused by the inaugural World Cup in Qatar.

DK: Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brentford, Fulham. Spurs are well-placed to push on and Chelsea still boast impressive squad depth, despite being in transition. MO: Liverpool, City, Tottenham, Arsenal. I’d be pretty confident on the top three. DK: A multi-team title race. I do think Arsenal will have a better chance of disrupting it than Manchester United. Chelsea could sneak into the top four. It’s possible but they’ll have enough to stay up. Will Brentford suffer second-season syndrome? NK: A visit to the City Ground. It will be raucous after 23 years away from the top-flight. Perhaps it is wishful thinking but a mid-season World Cup could shake up the established order in the second half of the campaign and create a three-or four-team title race. The signing of the season will be... SC: City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal. The top two are a cut above the rest, but the battle for third and fourth will be close. There doesn’t appear to be much to separate a chasing pack that includes the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, while another new era begins under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Fulham and Bournemouth have both made swift returns to the top-flight, while Nottingham Forest are back at this level for the first time in 23 long years.

Liverpool Predictions 2022/23: Premier League finish, Best Signing ... (Teamtalk.com)

Liverpool cannot get much better than finishing inches away from a quadruple, so TEAMtalk's Jonny Whitfield assesses how Jurgen Klopp will respond.

I know I’ve said injuries will bite Liverpool along the way, but that’s not to say Carvalho can’t shine in the midfield. Liverpool won both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup last season, but I don’t think they will retain either of those crowns. But Jota and Firmino will also be required heavily in the Premier League and Champions League. I don’t know whether he’ll hit that target given the rotating Klopp likes to do in his midfield. Fine margins remain like in the Premier League, but there is a different feel to their parameters. It is perhaps no surprise that I am going to say Salah in this category. The FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs were great, but the lack of goals and scraping through on penalties shows improvement is there to be made. And I am backing history to repeat itself – perhaps against Bayern Munich this time. Naby Keita withdrew in the first half for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, leaving young Tyler Morton stranded as the last remaining option – but he remained an unused substitute. They cost Liverpool in the 2-2 draw with Brighton, when Thiago Alcantara was already out. But I’m going to go with Liverpool second once more, just missing out to City again. A five-point swing, showing where Liverpool need to make up ground.

Oddsmakers have pegged the quest for the Premier League title as a two-horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool.

Man United's preseason title odds are the longest they've been in over a decade, according to sports betting archive SportsOddsHistory.com. Liverpool, though, finished just one point behind and notched a victory over Man City last week in the FA Community Shield. Tottenham, at +1,400, and Chelsea, at +1,600, are next but are a ways down oddsboards.

GW1 Premier League predictions: Tottenham, Liverpool and ... (NationalWorld)

Crystal Palace and Arsenal will kick off the new campaign at Selhurst Park, before the remaining 18 teams compete in their opening fixtures across the weekend.

The loss of Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella will have a big impact on Graham Potter’s side and I just can’t see them being good enough for their trip to Old Trafford. While the Red Devils still have a number of signings they need to make, their team is definitely strong enough to beat the Seagulls and I can’t see Erik ten Hag slip up in his first match. While the trio are unlikely to have left before this weekend’s fixtures, it will definitely have a big impact on their performance and it is unclear whether the players will feature at the King Power Stadium. I think it will be a tight game and I definitely don’t think the Cherries have a strong enough squad to break Villa down, but they may well claim their first point since promotion. Crystal Palace will undoubtedly have a good season but I think it will take them a while to get into it, with Cheick Doucoure likely to shine in the second half of the campaign. Arsenal are once again featuring in the first match of the season and this time they will want to avoid the humiliation of defeat.

Six contenders (more or less) and five story lines (plus a few extra) as the new season kicks off with everyone chasing Manchester City (again).

That leaves, perhaps, West Ham — bolstered by a couple of smart additions — as the only viable candidate. But it is a curious progress, one tempered by the fact that United does not appear to have a list of recruits beyond players ten Hag knew and liked and undercut by the Ronaldo saga. Whether any team can emerge from the pack, though, is a different matter. In what may have been the purest distillation of modern soccer imaginable, Cristiano Ronaldo received a rapturous reception upon his return to Old Trafford last weekend. Not one ready to challenge City or Liverpool, perhaps, but one that could end the club’s long exile from the Champions League. Manchester City will win it, as it has four of the past five editions, and it will most likely do so by seeing off a spirited but ultimately futile challenge from Liverpool. Although, this time, there is just one small caveat.

Though the gaps in attack are what I’ve focused on here, the organization of their defense is likely to be the central tell against Liverpool. Can Fulham stay compact and organized all while taking any and all chances Liverpool give them? Liverpool on opening day should prove to be a test of adapted grit for the runaway champions. Fulham have been dealt a blow there in addition to the loss of Carvalho: Harry Wilson has suffered a pre-season injury that will see him sidelined. Fulham have been a yo-yo club in recent years, and a major part of the reason for that is Mitrović’s seeming inability to get anything close to his Championship goal tally in the top division. Thanks to us, they have a Fábio Carvalho-shaped hole in their attack (he scored the second-most goals [12] last season, and was also there and thereabouts in terms of assists and chances created). It’s possible that Fulham are aiming to replace Carvalho’s creativity via new signing Andreas Pereira (yes, that Andreas Pereira: signed from Manchester United, fresh off a loan from Flamengo where he committed the error that cost them the Copa Libertadores), but we shall see. Liverpool again start the season away against newly-promoted opposition, and, as ever, it’s difficult to evaluate Fulham in the context of the top tier.

(The lavish spree undertaken after promotion in 2020 backfired so spectacularly that the idea of recruiting too heavily in preparation for the Premier League has entered the lexicon as “ doing a Fulham.”) He is confident that he can avoid the same trapdoors. “There is a feeling that you have to over-invest,” he said. “The Championship is a great league,” Parry said. As ever, at the dawn of a new season, there is a conviction at Fulham that the cycle can be broken. He is not the only one caught in that same quandary. Nor is he merely something of a national hero, scorer of the goal that sent his country to the World Cup. What is noteworthy, though, is the scale of the drop-off. A player who was far too good for the Championship appeared to be not good enough at all for the Premier League. “It is better to be the mouse’s head than the lion’s tail.” The difference, of course, is the division where he finds himself. He is not simply a Serbian international, a fairly constant presence for his country for the better part of a decade.

In the interest of transparency, I’m actually an Arsenal fan, so it pains me to say that the Gunners will once again finish shy of the Champions League places. Rather, I see Mikel Arteta going from strength to strength and Gabriel Jesus living up to expectations. So why am I predicting them to improve this season? However, for as long as there’s a slight chance that I’ve pulled off a minor miracle and people will start asking me for the lottery numbers, it’s going to be fascinating to watch yet another year of the world’s best league. The reality of the situation is that the ‘big six’ is so strong that it’s very easy to miss out and I’m not actually predicting Arsenal to have a bad season. There is, after all, a world in which Palace could go down this season. But all isn’t as it seems. You heard it here first. The 2022/23 Premier League season has officially arrived! Look, I’m a fan of Bruno Lage and think he has a lot of potential to be a great Premier League coach for years to come, but my nose tells me that there’s a tough, tough season on the horizon at Molineux. One of my more rebellious shouts, it must be said, because everybody seems to have the Toffees locked in for a place in the Championship, but I’m here to tell you that they’re going to surprise people in 2022/23. I really, really, really wanted to predict Fulham to stay up because the fact that the Cottagers seem to be playing switcheroo with Norwich City every season is a worrying sign of the cavity forming between the Championship and Premier League.
