The Brazilian pings the crossbar with a header of his own, and the game remains on zeroes. He earned his 10th yellow card in the penultimate match of the Ligue 1 campaign. 35 mins to kickoff: Some transfer news for PSG as Giorginio Wijnaldum, who has been looking for an exit from Parc des Princes this season, could be off to Roma on loan after the two clubs have a breakthrough in negotiations. It fell to the Nigerian off a deflected shot, and his effort was heavily contested by Vitinha. Nantes are matching PSG in midfield, but the attack is disjointed and failing to trouble the PSG back line. PSG grab a critical second goal in the dying moments of the first half. It's all made by Neymar who weaves through the midfield and sends a feed through the middle. Marcus Coco draws a yellow card for a very late trip of Nuno down the left. Galtier looked to have told PSG to wrap things up tactically for the first half, but Neymar wins a silly foul by Sissoko and bags the free-kick strike. The referee has a talk with players of both teams. PSG topped the Ligue 1 table last season by a whopping 15 points, while Nantes won an upset-laden domestic cup, beating Galtier's OGC Nice in the final. With a reputation as a no-nonsense coach, all eyes will be on how PSG's superstars respond to Galtier's philosophy and tactics, and whether they can hit the ground running under their new manager.

Messi stars as PSG beat Nantes in Trophée des Champions (LFP)

Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Sergio Ramos were on target as Paris Saint-Germain beat FC Nantes 4-0 in to lift the Trophée des Champions in Israel.

Lafont denied Messi a second late on (88') and it ended 4-0. Evann Guessand (50') and Messi (53') exchanged chances before Ramos made it 3-0 inside the hour. PSG were without suspended superstar Kylian Mbappé for this meeting at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium, but Christophe Galtier packed enough talent into what looks to be becoming his preferred 3-4-1-2 formation.

Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 Nantes: Lionel Messi, Neymar and Sergio ... (Eurosport.com)

Paris Saint-Germain beat 10-man Nantes 4-0 to claim their 15th Trophee des Champions and deliver an ominous warning to their domestic challengers.

Simply an absurd record for a legendary player not quite ready to head into the autumn of his career. Lionel Messi opened the scoring before Neymar added a second and Sergio Ramos added a third in the second half. The Argentinian weaves through the Nantes defence and looks to just slide his shot beyond Lafont but the French keeper gets down well to deny him. Messi had been at the heart of every PSG attack and on 22 minutes, Neymar drifted in off the left and looked for his ex-Barcelona team mate with a through ball. Nantes: 8 -- Nantes had eight shots against PSG, more than half of which came from inside the box. 57’ GOAL PSG Sergio Ramos makes it 3-0 with a back-heel finish from close range. Only once did a PSG attack break down for lack of numbers, that coming in the final minutes as debutant Nordi Mukiele surged forward on a solo run. The Brazilian spins and shoots just wide. Even at 4-0 up, PSG continued to attack with energy and numbers. When Mbappe returns, he will likely play the same role. Neymar then rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot late on. In the end, PSG had to settle for a 4-0 win, and a trophy to start the new season.

After an underwhelming first season in French football, Messi struck 22 minutes into the traditional curtain-raiser, being played in Israel for the second year in a row.

But, with Kylian Mbappe suspended, the night was principally Neymar’s. His opening goal was his first from a direct free-kick for PSG since 2019. The club will expect harder-won gold medals to be coming their way at the season’s end. “They have a real technical link,” said Christophe Galtier, the new PSG head coach. The pair were reunited last summer in Paris, but so far have enjoyed only sporadic moments of complicity. Brought down shortly before half-time, he took the subsequent free-kick, and converted it with a curling drive. “So, you also defend these days?” smiled the losing manager at the opposition superstar during Sunday's Trophee des Champions curtain-raiser to the French club season.
