Arctic Circle Wind Farm Has PPA. The first wind project located north of the Arctic circle in Finland is expected to enter operation later this year, after a “route-to-power” purchase agreement (PPA) was signed that will support development of the 96.9-MW installation in Nuolivaara. Officials said the project represents a milestone in Finland’s program for renewable energy, and is an extension of a partnership between energy and sustainability solutions provider World Kinect Energy Services (WKES), and renewable energy developer and operator wpd Europe (wpd). The PPA is the second between WKES and wpd. NA-SA said about 2,000 jobs will be created during the two-year upgrade, as the utility modernizes “all the processes and systems of the plant.” The utility called the signing of what it called a “framework agreement” with the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Argentina “a fundamental milestone,” saying it “establishes the regulatory requirements” for the refurbishment and subsequent operation of Atucha 1. Madeleine King, Australia’s Minister of Resources, said the country will commit nearly $4 million to a three-year investment partnership between critical minerals firm Khanij Bidesh India and the Critical Minerals Facilitation Office of Australia (CMFO). Khanji Bidesh India and CMFO announced the companies will initially commit $6 million to support a due diligence study of Australia’s lithium and cobalt assets. A wpd executive said the Nuolivaara wind farm is the company’s sixth in Finland. The Nuolivaara project will include 17 wind turbines manufactured by Nordex, each a Delta4000-series N163/5.7 model with 5.7-MW output. The companies were part of the development of the 188-MW Karhunnevankangas wind farm in the Österbotten region of western Finland last year. Argentina Ready to Refurbish Reactor. Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA (NA-SA) in early July said it will take Atucha 1, the first nuclear power reactor in South America, offline when the unit’s operating license expires at the end of 2024. The utility said it then will undertake a two-year, $463 million refurbishment program that will enable the reactor to restart and operate for at least another 20 years. It also is considered a way for industries that need heat to source that heat from a renewable resource. The units will also be modernized with new turbine protection and health monitoring systems, safety systems for the boilers, and upgraded boiler control elements and instrumentation. Cuba at present has 72 solar PV parks, with total capacity of 226 MW and annual generation of 310 GWh. There are more than 24,000 solar panels installed in isolated communities, mainly at rural schools, clinics, and homes. The third unit will be replaced with a new Ovation system. Emerson’s automation systems and software will enable the coal-fired power station to convert to biomass feedstock.

In Defense of the Poorly Named August Recess (TIME)

So while there will be plenty of eye-rolling and sighing about Congress’ perceived laziness, they’re still working more than most folks: 59 hours per week when in their districts, compared to 70 hours when Congress is in session, according to one survey. Much of the arm-chair political class mocks the August Recess as a vacation by another name. It sounds childish for most, and suggests lawmakers are blowing off some steam after a PB&J and before an afternoon of spelling drills and math problems. The reasons are as pragmatic as they are political: Washington has no voters of consequence, D.C. is mighty miserable right now, and even the most stable seats can find themselves in play if an incumbent neglects them. “Recess” conjures images of dodgeball, “horse” under the hoops, and hopscotch. This article is part of The D.C. Brief, TIME’s politics newsletter.

8 The rainfall was below average for many parts of the island in July 2022. On 22 July 2022, the convergence of prevailing winds over Singapore and the surrounding region brought moderate to heavy thundery showers over many parts of the island in the afternoon. 7 The daily maximum temperature ranged from 31.1 degrees Celsius to 35.8 degrees Celsius in July 2022. On 20 July 2022, two spells of Sumatra squalls brought heavy thundery showers and gusty winds over many parts of Singapore in the early hours and morning. Relatively warm and humid nights with minimum night-time temperatures of up to 28 degrees Celsius can be expected on a few days, particularly over the eastern and southern coastal areas of the island, when the prevailing southeast winds bring warm and humid air from the surrounding seas. In addition, Sumatra squalls from the Strait of Malacca may bring widespread thundery showers with occasional gusty winds in the pre-dawn and morning on a few days.

Forget New Year's resolutions: is August the new January? (harpersbazaar.com)

Is August the new January? Why you should work on your goals in the relative peace of summer when you're relaxed with time to think.

If you decide it’s time for a change, now’s the time to do something about it. Or is there a sideways move you might like to negotiate within the organisation? If work life is very busy, there’s little time to reflect on how fulfilling it is or isn’t. Can you see a future? Time slows down, days take longer to pass and without the structure of a regular working week to organise our time, life can become fuzzy around the edges. It’s the perfect time for self-reflection or life admin. It’s when schools and universities pack up for summer, newspapers are full of non-stories, parliament closes for recess and most of Europe shuts up shop.

Recently released climate outlooks show much of the country is in store for more heat while an active monsoon continues to dominate the Southwest.

Forecasters admit questions remain about how both the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific hurricane seasons will impact the country through the end of the month. The NOAA outlook expects most of the Plains and Northeast to see below-average rainfall through the next 30 days. NOAA believes the Plains and the Mississippi Valley have the greatest chance of seeing above-average temperatures through the month.

Similarly, the harvest of oilseeds is likely to decrease as production of sunflower seed is expected at 7.5 million tonnes (45 percent below the previous year's level), while production of soybeans and rapeseed is expected at 2.0 million and 1.7 million tonnes, respectively. The current forecast for the 2022 cereal harvest indicates a production of about 51 million tonnes: 20 million tonnes of wheat, 24 million tonnes of maize and about 7 million tonnes of other coarse grains. Overall, in 2022, the reduced area harvested and the decline in yields due to hampered access to inputs, caused by limited access to financial services and high prices, are expected to result in a reduction of cereal production by 40 percent compared to the previous year's exceptional results 3 and by about 30 percent compared to the five-year average level. Although some people have recently returned to their homes, there are still large numbers of IDPs located in the western parts of the country. In addition, export licensing requirements were introduced for other commodities, including wheat and meslin ( FPMA Food Policy ). On 1 July, the government adopted Resolution 759 , which cancels wheat and meslin export licenses, lifts the export ban on oats and introduces export licenses. Between 20 and 30 percent of the area planted to the 2022 winter crops may not be harvested as a result of direct destruction, constrained access to fields, labour shortages and lack of economic resources.

Stocks waver to start August after best month since 2020 (The Washington Post)

Stocks wavered in afternoon trading on Wall Street Monday as investors face another busy week of earnings and economic reports.

A surge in oil prices throughout the year only worsened the impact from inflation. Wall Street will also get several updates on the job market, which has remained strong. An inflation gauge that is closely tracked by the Fed jumped 6.8% in June from a year ago, the biggest increase in four decades. Several big companies are reporting earnings this week, which will give investors insight into how inflation is impacting businesses and consumers. August’s subdued opening follows a solid rally for stocks in July that marked the best month for the S&P 500 index since November 2020. Retailers and consumer products makers made solid gains and offset losses elsewhere in the market.

Wet Weather Will Continue In 1st Half Of August, Expect Rainy ... (Must Share News)

The current wet weather will continue in the first half of August, said the MSS, so we should expect a rainy National Day week.

That will happen on a few days in the latter half of the fortnight, MSS said. On the other hand, Admiralty recorded a chilly 21.6°C in the early hours of the morning on 20 Jul. That means the total rainfall for the first fortnight of August will be above average over most of the nation. The persistence of wet weather in August is due to the prevailing Southwest Monsoon conditions over Singapore and the region. While the rain will be mostly confined to the period between the morning and early afternoon, it may occur in the pre-dawn hours and early morning, too. In a weather advisory on Monday (1 Aug), MSS predicted short-duration thundery showers on most days in the first two weeks of the month.

Early-August snow is more unusual but did occur on top of Pikes Peak and Mount Massive in the Colorado Rockies in 2017. The most snow measured there in August was 2.5 inches in 1965. This story does not necessarily represent the position of our parent company, IBM. This translates to afternoon temperatures in the 80s and 90s for most. America's northernmost town – Utqiaġvik, Alaska, formerly known as Barrow – typically sees its first measurable snow, at least 0.1 inches, on Aug. 25, based on the latest 30-year average from 1991 to 2020. This year, there have been three tropical storms through the beginning of August. This effectively opens up more favorable real estate for tropical cyclone development. August Is The Wettest Month In Parts Of The South And Alaska The coolest air is typically found in parts of the higher elevations of the West, where lows drop into the 30s and 40s. - The first snow of the season is possible in parts of the West. August outlook: We dodge prolonged heat but it's soggy again (The Washington Post)

Like June and July, August is expected to avoid severe, sustained heat but we anticipate abundant rainfall.

So far this year, temperatures are running slightly ahead of the 30-year normal and in lockstep with last year. On July 1, we very accurately projected near-normal temperatures. Our lowest temperature was 66 degrees on July 11. We observed our hottest weather on July 23 with a high of 96 degrees. Here is the outlook for the second half of the month from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration CFS model, which projects near normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation: The latest simulations from the various weather models (American, European, and Canadian, shown from left to right) support our outlook predicting close to normal temperatures and above normal rainfall for the first half of August:

Happy August! And, if I may say so myself, Happy Birthday to us!

It was great to stop by the Botanic Building in Balboa Park with Mayor Gloria and see the renovation’s progress. Women’s Equality Day is an opportunity to reflect on the persistence of the suffragettes who marched and advocated, over the course of nearly 100 years, to secure the right to vote. Throughout her life, Fahari truly lived up to the Swahili meaning of her name: magnificent and rare. Despite the increased attacks on our civil rights raging across the country, San Diego Pride was, yet again, a time of joy and celebration. But it’s also important to remember who we are, and who the people we know, and work with, and live by, and love, are and focus on the value of those relationships. Which is why, last month, California’s health leaders requested an increased supply of vaccines to help mitigate the spread of the virus, and are working in close collaboration with federal, state, and local officials to distribute vaccines, conduct tests, and increase awareness. On August 26th, we will celebrate Women’s Equality Day and the adoption of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits any state or the federal government from denying a person’s right to vote on the basis of sex. Additional funding will help support the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s redevelopment project, fund wildfire mitigation projects at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and address abandoned and derelict vessels at Zuniga Jetty Shoal near the entrance to San Diego Bay—just to name a few. The California Department of Public Health has a webpage dedicated to monkeypox for those interested in learning more. With many of our rights under attack, it feels as if our communities, friends, and families are drifting farther and farther apart. That means as soon as I’m done safely blowing out the candles, I’ll be part of the final negotiations for important bills on climate; women’s health care and abortion access, including my bill SB 1375; and worker protections, as well as casting votes on bills that will improve our state on behalf of all Californians. This follows some great work in June, when the Legislature passed one of the best state budgets in history, with funding that helps people now, invests in the future, and includes safeguards in the event of an economic downturn. Because Tenia is the youngest and insists that she has never, ever gotten to go first, I’ve asked her to start.

Summer heat continues as August begins (KSLA)

The heat rolls on as August gets underway! There's still no real relief on its way as August is expected to be above average for the ArkLaTex.

Temperatures will still be in the mid 90s Saturday thanks to the rain, but will increase back to the upper 90s Sunday with nothing to cool things back down. Temperatures will be muggy and only cool to the mid to upper 70s. So by the end of August, it will be in the mid 90s. Temperatures will be in the upper 80s around sunset, and will of course cool down once the sun sets. In terms of rainfall, it will be quite limited. Average high temperatures will be at their highest of the year for the first half of the month.

13 New Things To Do In August 2022 - Singapore Night Festival ... (thesmartlocal.com)

The public holiday on 9th Aug is not all the month has in store! Here are some of the best things to in August 2022.

Check. Anthony Chen’s 2019 drama film Wet Seasons is being screened at the Esplanade and we recommend you bring a packet of tissues with you for this movie. With a variety of activities happening, August is shaping up to be an exciting month. Nominated for 6 Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, this film is emotionally tumultuous and reflects on how relationships can form with the unlikeliest of people as other existing relationships falter. The 16-megapixel camera hosts a range of features like 4 different in-built filters and a time lapse function so you can unleash your creativity. SingPAW Weekend at South Beach Avenue is the one-stop event for all things pet-related. EDM lovers can head straight to Drip’s Main Room on the second floor. See if you can spot an Aztec snake with 2 heads, or even a Mayan pyramid alongside handmade medallions handcrafted by the Mexican community in Singapore. Stand out from the crowd by heading down to Avant Garde Art Space to craft your own digital camera. The setup features neon light tubes, reflective surfaces, and an interactive projection of a Chinese scholar-warrior on a big screen. From what we’ve seen in the likes of Disney film Coco, Mexican culture is both eclectic and energetic. The National Day Parade has always been a spectacle with vibrant performances, live fireworks, and a huge crowd. That said, this year’s rendition of the Singapore Night Festival will not disappoint.
