The Queen has been pleased to appoint Mr Mohammed Saddiq, DL, as Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Somerset.
Mohammed Saddiq, DL, is a highly regarded professional in the utilities and renewable energy sector, currently working as Executive Director of Operations at Wessex Water. But he also finds time to make a considerable voluntary contribution. He has also served further afield, as the Independent Chair of Bristol Green Capital Partnership, Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees of Bristol University, a Board Member of both the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership and the West of England Initiative, and a trustee of Penny Brohn Cancer Care. Much of this is focused on his home city of Bath, where he has been Chief Executive Officer of Future Bath Plus, a trustee of Transition Bath, a board member of the Bath and North East Somerset Initiative, and a school governor.

In the first quarter of 2022, food prices increased by 13 percent year on year, up from the levels close to 0 percent in the second half of 2020. The economy is expected to grow by 3.9 percent year on year in 2022, up from 3.4 percent in 2021. Despite the high international energy prices and the increased interest in the country as a supplier of natural gas as an alternative to the Russian Federation, high unemployment levels prevail, affecting the purchasing power of the population. In January 2022, as a response to high international prices and with the aim to increase the level of local procurement, the government increased the purchasing prices for the 2022 crop. Overall, the country imports cereals from a variety of origins, making it less vulnerable to disruptions in exports from Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Harvesting of the 2022 winter grains is expected to be completed by mid-August, with crops in the highlands maturing the latest.

Similarly, the harvest of oilseeds is likely to decrease as production of sunflower seed is expected at 7.5 million tonnes (45 percent below the previous year's level), while production of soybeans and rapeseed is expected at 2.0 million and 1.7 million tonnes, respectively. The current forecast for the 2022 cereal harvest indicates a production of about 51 million tonnes: 20 million tonnes of wheat, 24 million tonnes of maize and about 7 million tonnes of other coarse grains. Overall, in 2022, the reduced area harvested and the decline in yields due to hampered access to inputs, caused by limited access to financial services and high prices, are expected to result in a reduction of cereal production by 40 percent compared to the previous year's exceptional results 3 and by about 30 percent compared to the five-year average level. Although some people have recently returned to their homes, there are still large numbers of IDPs located in the western parts of the country. In addition, export licensing requirements were introduced for other commodities, including wheat and meslin ( FPMA Food Policy ). On 1 July, the government adopted Resolution 759 , which cancels wheat and meslin export licenses, lifts the export ban on oats and introduces export licenses. Between 20 and 30 percent of the area planted to the 2022 winter crops may not be harvested as a result of direct destruction, constrained access to fields, labour shortages and lack of economic resources.
