The Legend movie review: An elaborate advertisement of a bloated ... (The Indian Express)

The Legend movie cast: Saravanan Arul, Urvashi Rautela, Vivekh, Suman, Nasser, Geethika Tiwari The Legend movie director: JD and Jerry

The innate problem of The Legend is that it’s not a movie but a set piece to propel Saravanan into stardom. The pseudo movie aims to sell Saravanan Arul as a star. Talking about faces, The Legend features some capable actors like Vijakumar, Nasser, and Thambi Ramaiah. Unfortunately, everyone is turned into a laughable caricature mouthing some redundant lines. The trailer of The Legend had certain similarities to Rajinikanth’s 2007 film Sivaji. Like Shankar’s blockbuster, The Legend also has an overachieving hero, Saravanan (Saravanan Arul) who returns to his hometown to ostensibly help the unsuspecting villagers. It wants us to get goosebumps when the caked-up hero breaks into a monologue about his dedication to the country and its people. Perhaps, it’s the only thing that moves in the screenplay of The Legend, which otherwise stays static like Saravanan’s face.

'The Legend' movie review: An absurd, campy Saravana Stores ... (The Hindu)

Legend Saravanan's big-screen debut as an actor is a laugh riot in the theatres for all the wrong reasons.

Perhaps the ghosts of his popular trolls have followed him to the big screen, and like his previous attempts, this might end up working in his favour given how bizarre it is to watch a campy film as such with no care in the world. In the world of The Legend, after a woman's house is torched down by assailants, she happily walks into the next shot and shakes a leg with our hero. Also, a few duet songs between the heroine and the white knight hero. Perhaps it is with this same confidence, that Saravanan swoops onto the screen in The Legend and shatters the fourth wall with a note of gratitude to audience. Add the tacky set designs, bright costumes, excessive make-up — and Saravanan walking in slow motion — it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the film looks oddly similar to the many Saravana Stores commercials. Exhibiting remarkable confidence, Saravanan decided to take a step further and produce and act in his own movie, with long-forgotten director duo JD-Jerry helming the project.

Legend Saravanan, who is the owner of 'The New Legend Aravana Stores', is making his debut in films at the age of 52 both as an actor and producer.

The music and cinematography have also been lauded. While many have commented that it is a spoof film which can be watched with a gang of friends, there are others who are trolling the movie, especially Saravanan Arul, himself. The movie is directed by JD-Jerry, while the music is composed by Harris Jayaraj. Producer Listin Stephen has earned the distribution rights of the film in Kerala. Arul, known as Legend Saravanan, is making his debut in films at the age of 52 both as an actor and producer.

The Legend Movie Review: This template film starring Saravanan is ... (PINKVILLA)

There is formula. Then there is this film called 'The Legend', where the writing department seemed to have worked blissfully in silos.

Out of the blue, a whole joint family appears at the blast site to console a character who is purportedly sobbing. A blast scene comes in handy to parade the film's entire cast. You have got the entire story with the exception of a scene where a young DNA researcher behaves as though she has just come walking out of the villain's den to honey-trap the scientist-hero, who by the way spends as much time in the lab as Karan Johar spends putting governance-related questions to his guests on Koffee With Karan. Our hero is ultra-talented and can conjure up miracle cures provided someone close to him dies of sickness. This is akin to an onscreen saviour itching to end underemployment because unemployment is no longer vexing the vast majority of voluntarily unemployed youths of India. See, we have to be positive in life, especially when we voluntarily submit ourselves to a comprehensively overconfident film like 'The Legend'. Another writer was told to write scenes between hero and comedian after being given full liberty to copy from the oldest possible movies of every conceivable outdated masala filmmaker down the Vindhyas. Yet another writer was motivated to dedicate himself to writing song situations and this particular writer was mercilessly fooled into believing that the situations he was going to create would be used for a Rajinikanth film.

The Legend review: An expressionless Saravanan leads a cringe-fest (The News Minute)

Every Kollywood cliche to ever exist is on offer, at each turn. There are not one, but two “loosu ponnu” heroines (Geethika Tiwari and Urvashi Rautela).

At the intermission scene, predictably, a grand tragedy has occurred; a setback in the hero’s path. At a run-time of 2 hours 40 minutes, The Legend starts off laughable and quickly becomes unendurably grating. In Legend, it’s as if the businessman decided his money and a full-fledged Kollywood formula was enough to subject people to a film with himself in the lead. That is definitely a bonus. Unfortunately, the said driftwood doesn’t have a business empire at its disposal to fund a story that has the depth of a school play. The most forthright description would be: The Legend is the result of someone utterly and unfathomably besotted with themself. Oh, and this evil gang is all the way in Toronto, a helpful subtitle tells us. The film’s protagonist is a billionaire genius scientist. He will give this cure to the world for free. The movie’s plot is all about a billionaire scientist called Saravanan on a mission to find a cure for diabetes. The son of Saravanan Selvarathinam, he’s called 'The Legend Saravanan' and became a well-known face in Tamil Nadu after starring in ads for his The New Legend Saravana Stores. The chain of mega-shops along with the ads have become a part of the state’s mass cultural fabric, so the release of his film debut was surrounded by much curiosity. All the character-building required is to refer admiringly to one of the heroines as a “suthamaana Tamil ponnu” (a ‘pure Tamil woman’). And have her chase after a baby goat to sentimental music, while the foreign-return hero avidly watches on.

Alas, if only had they spent some of the money that they have splashed on the needless songs and stunts for the writing! It doesn't help that the rest of the performances, too, are far from convincing. The hype around The Legend is solely because of its leading man, the entrepreneur Saravanan, who has chosen to become a movie star.

Tribute To A Forbes Legend: Q.ai Founder Stephen Mathai-Davis (Forbes)

Those who have shaped and reshaped this company follow the spirit of founder B.C. Forbes. Stephen Mathai-Davis fit brilliantly into that tradition.

He was equally devoted to his parents, Prema and Wallace. Colleagues relished invitations to his home, where they felt like they became part of his family. His enthusiasm was infectious. On July 22, while preparing to shoot his new investing series on Forbes YouTube, Stephen collapsed at the office and never regained consciousness. But the most vivid part of Stephen was his spirit. Multicultural and multilingual, he came from a Wall Street family, and he had an evangelist’s zeal for using technology and finance to help people. For over a century, Forbes has championed entrepreneurs, and that’s true internally, too.
