Paper Rex become first APAC team to reach VCT Masters final (Nerd Street)

After beating reigning Masters champions OpTic Gaming, Paper Rex will await the winner of OpTic vs. FunPlus Phoenix.

Plus, FPX are coming in with a lot of momentum, and their run is shaping up to be the best story of the tournament after everything they’ve been through to get to Copenhagen. They beat a fellow NA team in the first round of the playoffs and DRX 2-1 in the next round. If the script at this tournament plays out the same way as the last, then OpTic would beat their opponent in the lower final and win a rematch in the grand final. After Paper Rex mounted a small comeback on Bind, OpTic called a timeout and closed out the map 13-9. Paper Rex reached the Masters: Copenhagen grand final by beating North America’s OpTic Gaming in the upper final. Paper Rex are the first team from the Asia-Pacific region to reach the grand final of an international VALORANT Masters or Champions event.

Paper Rex are sitting pretty watching OpTic, Fnatic and FunPlus Phoenix battle for the second spot in the grand final. “So we had to come up with something on the fly. OpTic became the first team to take a map from Paper Rex at Masters Copenhagen, and the best-of-three series went the distance. “Some of us already had experience playing in front of a crowd, so it was something we were accustomed to,” Benkai said. Even though the team has said throughout the event that they’ve already achieved their goals, they’ve just found their way to the highest forum of play with deceptive ease. Paper Rex made history on July 22 by becoming the first Asia Pacific team to make the grand final of a VALORANT Champions Tour international event.

Paper Rex will now move to the VCT Masters Copenhagen grand finals, where they will get a massive advantage with two map bans. Paper Rex initiated with this expected speed on Fracture, and the first few rounds were over in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately for OpTic, Paper Rex got the better of them today and became the first team to secure a spot in the grand final with their 2-1 victory. Benkai continued dominating on Breach with his flashes and stuns to secure his team a 9-3 half. Paper Rex took the first map of Haven with their signature attack-oriented playstyle that has caused teams to fumble so far in Masters. The Chamber duel between yay and f0rsakeN was exhilarating and close. The teams moved to Fracture, another map where Paper Rex have excelled in Masters so far.

Paper Rex Beats OpTic; Becomes First APAC Team To Reach ... (EarlyGame)

Paper Rex, the ultimate underdog, managed to take down the best team in North America, OpTic, to reach the Valorant Masters Copenhagen finals.

You could cleary tell OpTic was lacking the confidence and aggresiveness to close out rounds like the used to. As it turns out, Paper Rex had to overcome one of the aforementioned LAN finalists - the winner of Masters Reykjavik at that, OpTic Gaming, doing so in convincing fashion. It all started on Haven, where Paper Rex showed an absolute dominant facet of their game, led by f0rsakeN's historic performance on Chamber, accruing 18 kills to only 10 deaths - more impressively, somehow he managed an outrageous 67% headshot accuracy.

OpTic Gaming in a familiar spot after upper bracket loss to Paper Rex (Upcomer)

Much like their run at the previous Masters, OpTic Gaming and their loss to Paper Rex starts another lower bracket run in Stage 2 Masters.

On that same path, they lost to Brazilian team LOUD in the upper bracket finals to beat them in the grand finals. “With Paper Rex, it wasn’t a lack of awareness that led to our loss; it was a lot of good lurks and timings,” FNS said. They didn’t beat them in their first rematch but did so at Stage 1 Masters on their way to the title. Firstly, from 2022 Stage 1 Challengers, OpTic lost to The Guard in the upper bracket finals. One could assume this would lead to some trouble for the team, but losing in the spot they did has gained them an international championship. This is the fourth time in 2022 that OpTic have lost an upper bracket final match.
