Manchester United vs Aston Villa LIVE (Manchester Evening News)

Live match updates and analysis as Man Utd face Aston Villa in Perth as part of their pre-season tour.

The United bus has just arrived at the Optus Stadium and Erik ten Hag was straight out to the pitch to have a look, leaving in conversation with Darren Fletcher. The technical director is back out now, talking to the players and pointing out the problematic parts of the pitch. They picked up a couple of injuries and think the pitch played a part. Leeds are staying in our hotel in town, and a member of their staff was critical of the pitch, saying there was “no way to change direction” on it. It’s on at the moment, but there has to be a good chance it will cut up, given the dark and muddy patches on it. There was a game on it last night, with Crystal Palace playing Leeds, and the surface wasn’t great, with obvious bright green patches where new grass has been laid over AFL markings. You have to accept it as a manager, as a team and you have to get the best out of it - that's what we did," Ten Hag said. Ten Hag’s pattern of picking his strongest possible team continues in pre-season and but for an injury to McTominay it would probably have been just one change. Van de Beek is foraging forward into the area early on - he was in line with the six-yard box just then - and Fred is clearly occupying the holding role for however long United go without recruiting a midfielder. You know it is pre-season when the stadium compere says “Make some noise for Fred the Red”. He is not as omnipresent on matchdays back in Manchester but he still gets wheeled out for the pre-season tours. The only uncertainty was over who would start at left-back and he has gone with Luke Shaw. Van de Beek is eager but barely been on the ball. Villa fail to capitalise and the chance is eventually squandered, though.

Both players roamed from the flank to central areas to create overloads in the middle third of the pitch, with the Dutchman’s runs especially difficult to pick up as he took on unorthodox positions to help work the ball up the pitch.

They also own rights to the Carabao Cup and several international matches. However, Jacob Ramsey’s 77th minute strike was followed by Philippe Coutinho’s equaliser in the space of five minutes to produce an impressive comeback from the hosts. Erik ten Hag will have every intention of continuing his winning start as Manchester United manager when his side face Aston Villa on Saturday, and will therefore most likely stick with a similar side to the one he has used for the majority of their pre-season tour. Manchester United will bring their pre-season tour of Australia to a close on Saturday when they face Premier League rivals Aston Villa in Perth, as Erik ten Hag looks to make it four wins from four matches since taking charge of the club.

And just like that, one of United's full-backs does get involved in an attack.

"But I also know this season (has) a lot of games, the World Cup, so we need more options. I'm really happy with the performance from our midfield and offence department in this moment. Expect Villa to play in their narrow 4-3-3 shape Gerrard loves. The first time Villa cross the halfway line they have half a shout for a penalty after Fred bundles into the back of Coutinho in the area. United with another corner after Sancho's side-foot volley at the back post is blocked by McGinn. Villa right-back Matty Cash whistles a shot from distance not far wide of the far post. Ramsey got the better of Maguire a little too easily earlier in the move. Maguire should be one of the beneficiaries. Another well-worked United goal in Australia. The delivery may be part of that but United have also added Christian Eriksen and that will give them another weapon from set-pieces next season. Shaw kept a cool head to look up and cross from the byline to Jadon Sancho, who volleyed home for his third goal in four tour matches. It's only pre-season but the quality of United's goals on tour has really stood out.

Player ratings: Man United 2-2 Aston Villa - Jadon Sancho shines in ... (The Peoples Person)

Manchester United drew with Aston Villa 2-2 today in a pre-season friendly in rainy Perth, Australia. Here are our player ratings for the game:.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Looks like he’s getting back to his best, but not quite there yet. Bruno Fernandes 6 – Was involved in a lot of United’s best moments, but again quite wasteful on occasions. Luke Shaw 6 – A great run from Shaw to set up the first goal and picked Sancho out superbly. Pickpocketed at the start of the second which almost led to an Ollie Watkins goal. Again, the terrible conditions don’t help technically gifted players such as Martial. Just didn’t seem to impact the game at all.

It remained lively throughout the latter stages, but the Midlanders carried the greater threat in worsening conditions. There was nothing Villa or Martinez could do to stop Erik ten Hag’s men taking a deserved lead on 25 minutes and it was another fine team move. Seconds later, Harry Maguire rose to meet a Luke Shaw corner but his solid header was punched clear by Martinez. Maguire then made a superb block just after the hour-mark after Bailey nipped past De Gea and tried to score from a tight angle. After Rashford sent a shot just wide on 37 minutes, the England man saw his volleyed effort deflected home by Cash after lovely a ball from Fred and cross from Sancho. At the other end, Cash fired a low drive inches wide of David De Gea’s far-right post on eight minutes, before Sancho took aim for the Reds a couple of minutes later and saw his shot pushed away, and just out of the reach of Anthony Martial.

A goal from an added-time corner gave Aston Villa a 2-2 friendly draw from 2-0 down against Manchester United in a soggy Perth.

The weather had come close to forcing a postponement and the danger of injury was obvious. Sancho drifted along the right and popped the ball in. Ten Hag said: “Football is a sport of mistakes and we have to decrease the mistakes. United’s No 1 dived and missed the ball but it blazed wide of his right post. We have to get out of the dressing room and back in our plan [after half-time] and that is what we didn’t do.” “That’s what I just said in the dressing room,” said the manager.

Man Utd vs Aston Villa: Ashley Young sends message to Anthony ... (Metro)

Former Manchester United captain Ashley Young has tipped Anthony Martial for a big season after praising his performances in pre-season.

Martial joined United in 2015 from Monaco for £54million, a then-record-breaking transfer fee for a teenager but has only hit double-figures for goals in the Premier League in three out of the seven seasons he has spent in Manchester. The former United skipper, who wore the armband for Villa during the match, initially posted: ‘End of the tour. Martial had looked set to leave Old Trafford this summer after struggling massively over the previous two seasons with form and injuries, and with Erik ten Hag overhauling his squad, he looked destined for the chopping block.

Your Man Utd and Aston Villa questions answered (BBC Sport)

BBC football reporter Simon Stone answers questions from Manchester United and Aston Villa fans after their 2-2 pre-season draw in Perth, Australia.

But the idea is to have competition for places. And then, is it a team De Gea wants to play for? In some ways, I admire United's stance on De Jong - but it is a gamble to an extent. There is an element of truth to that but in the modern game, results matter - and a reliance on experience comes from that. That might mean United were open to letting him go and I could see why a move might appeal. Would you agree there is a different feel to Manchester United this summer from the top down? It is unrealistic to expect United to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool this season. But the continued talk of him wanting to play in the Champions League suggests the exact opposite. And if they do, will it encourage Carney Chukwuemeka to sign if he can see a clear pathway to first-team football - or has that ship sailed? But he is inconsistent and needs to stay fit. But that is what he is - a player of promise. The big question is how far the owners are prepared to go.
