Fuel for Thought: Esteban Ocon on French Grand Prix, His 100th F1 ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Alpine driver talks about France's rich motorsport history, coming off his team's best weekend of the year and what to look for at Circuit Paul Ricard.

It was such a long time that the Grand Prix was supposed to happen, and there was rumors and talks about it happening. We were very quick, and we managed to have a car which was very decent and a very good platform. EO: So the most challenging part is definitely after the long straight, you have, you have the chicane, and then you have Signe, which is a very flat out corner about 300 kph. EO: To me, it was definitely the best news of the whole year when I heard the Grand Prix was about to come in 2018. But it’s also very important for the engineer to get the car right and to have the confidence to attack such a corner. EO: It’s quite emotional, I have to say, to get to 100 Grand Prix. You want to get to Formula One as a kid racing in go-karts. EO: In Formula One, you go to all the venues, and it’s called Grand Prix. And Grand Prix is obviously a French word. I still feel like I’ve just arrived to Formula One, and I still have a lot to achieve, obviously. The 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix saw a multi-car Turn 1 wreck, Sebastian Vettel’s disqualification after a breach of fuel regulations, Lewis Hamilton taking the world title lead from Verstappen and Ocon grinning ear-to-ear as France’s national anthem echoed in the venue. The time came in 2020 with Renault, which turned into Alpine in ’21, and there was no doubt about Ocon’s talent and determination. It remains unknown if this will be au revoir to the French Grand Prix as Formula One weighs next season’s schedule. France has an extensive motorsports history, being the first ever to host a race titled as Grand Prix 44 years before the Formula One World Championship was created.

You probably know someone who just got into Formula One (The Washington Post)

Formula One Grand Prix are averaging a million viewers per race in America. The FIA, the governing body of the sport, just christened a new course in Miami, ...

She’s more excited about the forthcoming “F1 Manager 2022” from Frontier Games, a spiritual sequel to 2000′s “F1 Manager” and the first officially licensed F1 management simulation to come out in over 20 years. The first thing you learn when you start following Formula One is that the races are the tip of the iceberg; that philosophy has also taken hold at Codemasters. I’m not a soccer or a basketball guy, but I know who the key people in those sports are, because they transcended the sport, and that wasn’t something F1 had achieved,” Mather said. Perhaps the largest signifier of F1′s broadening appeal is the introduction of Breaking Point to “F1 2021” — a story-based, single-player mode where you take control of a newcomer driver, rubbing shoulders with the open-wheel elite. “When we first started on this series we were always catering to the F1 fan, and F1 fans are a very defined audience,” he said in an interview with The Washington Post. “But in recent years it’s absolutely blown up. That being said, what she likes most about the sport — the characters, the grudges, the meta-narratives surrounding every hairpin turn — is not easily replicated in a racing series. We did an automatic reset to track, so instead of the frustration of getting out of the gravel that the hardcore [players] want, you can jump back on course. “The fact that the drivers are basically getting battle tactics over the radio from their engineers is very cool and exciting. There’s no better example of this than the Netflix serial “Formula One: Drive To Survive” — the wildly popular docuseries that glosses over the heady mechanical gumption of open-wheel racing in favor of headstrong, Real Housewives-esque drama. F1 was always a fascinating universe, but as the sport became more web-literate, young people were given the tools to discover it on their own terms. The verdict is unanimous: F1 is officially a big deal in the United States. Formula One Grand Prix are averaging a million viewers per race in America. The FIA, the governing body of the sport, just christened a new course in Miami, and plans on opening another track in Las Vegas next year.

The heat appeared to have a soporific effect on everyone for a short period before Leclerc returned to beat his Ferrari teammate’s time by 0.186 only for the Spaniard to respond and jump six-tenths clear. As expected, it was a tight contest and four minutes later Verstappen edged ahead by 0.010 seconds only for Sainz, facing a grid penalty on Sunday, to sweep clear at the top by 0.850 in 1:33.322. The session was uninterrupted and largely uneventful as the teams adapted to the heat – the track temperature was 50 degrees and the air 34 degrees – in front of a big holiday crowd. “But we’re still not as quick as those front guys – and we’re a little bit further back than we were in the last race.” Mercedes had hoped to fight at the front on the smooth circuit that suits their car, but instead, said Hamilton, they “have a lot of work to do – a lot of ground to cover.” Kevin Magnussen was seventh for Haas ahead of Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri, Daniel Ricciardo in the second McLaren and Sergio Perez, in the second Red Bull. Carlos Sainz led Charles Leclerc at the top of the times on Friday as Ferrari dominated second practice for the French Grand Prix ahead of world championship leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

F1 French GP: Leclerc edges Verstappen in Paul Ricard FP1 (autosport.com)

Charles Leclerc narrowly topped the first Formula 1 practice session ahead of the 2022 French Grand Prix as Red Bull's defending champion Max Verstappen ...

Russell, meanwhile, was best of the rest in fourth. It continued to be a messy session for Mexican, who straightlined the chicane and had to briefly stop at the Red Bull garage after his visor tear-off was caught in the right-rear suspension. With drivers sticking to the now scrubbed Pirellis for the remainder of the hour, the Monegasque preserved his 0.09s advantage over Verstappen to claim the first bragging rights. After a mid-session lull, with 30 mins to run Verstappen emerged with a shiny new set of soft Pirellis to lower the times to 1m34.346s thanks to a particularly strong first sector. Leclerc surged to the top of the times in the final third of the hour-long FP1 to eclipse his chief championship rival by a slender 0.09s as Carlos Sainz completed the top three. Leclerc improved to a 1m37.420s before Verstappen, keeping to practice form in 2022, blew the bankers away at his first attempt as he ran to a 1m35.727s to find 1.6s over the Ferrari.

According to our data, they were the fourth fastest in terms of qualifying simulations, a solid 0.2s clear of nearest rivals AlphaTauri, so Q3 with both cars is a realistic prospect. They topped both practice sessions, with a one-two in second practice that put the Italian squad more than half a second clear of the field. With a little work overnight, Hamilton is optimistic they can put themselves in the fight for a podium. And when they turned up with a series of upgrades, it only served to support that chatter.

Asked by Autosport if McLaren was facing any lobbying from the core group of teams to back a smaller change, Seidl replied: “No - we’re an independent team, we make up our own mind and fight for what we think is correct. But McLaren is not among the teams looking for the FIA to make an adjustment to its proposals, with team boss Seidl welcoming the changes for next year and denying there was any overstep by F1’s governing body. The FIA began to take action to address the matter on safety grounds over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, but a number of teams questioned how broad an issue it was as some struggled with bouncing more than others.

F1 Grand Prix practice results: Sainz fastest in French GP on Friday (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Carlos Sainz was fastest during French Grand Prix practice on Friday, the 12th round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, leading a Ferrari 1-2.

Verstappen beat that by 0.01s with 1m34.172s, before Sainz was the first of the frontrunners to switch to softs, unleashing 1m33.322s – highlighting a 0.85s delta between the compounds in similar track conditions. Sainz stayed third, over three tenths off the pace, ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes, Pierre Gasly’s updated AlphaTauri and Perez. Top spot then became a straight Verstappen v Leclerc fight. Leclerc beat his teammate for P1 by 0.186s with 1m33.136s just before the halfway point, but Sainz responded on a second push lap with 1m32.527s. That proved to be the fastest lap of the day. His teammate Charles Leclerc was fastest in FP1 but Sainz set the fastest lap of the day in FP2, with Red Bull’s championship leader Max Verstappen in third. Verstappen set the bar at 1m34.991s, running soft tyres from the start of the session, half a second clear of teammate Sergio Perez (who suffered a big spin at Turn 3 early on and later straight-lined a chicane) and 0.83s clear of Leclerc at the halfway point.

Alex Albon was a fine eighth for Williams, more than 1.5s ahead of team mate Nicholas Latifi, who was running the new upgrade package for the first time but ended up 20th overall. The early signs are positive, with Pierre Gasly just a second off the pace in fifth in his home race – however Tsunoda was down in 18th, more than two seconds off the ultimate pace. Carlos Sainz was more than 0.3s off the pace in third, the Spaniard facing a tricky weekend ahead after Ferrari fitted a new control electronics to his F1-75 that triggers a 10-place grid penalty.

Sainz and Leclerc finished the session in second and third, three and five tenths down respectively, followed by Hamilton in the Mercedes, the Briton a second behind on Verstappen's time. Aston Martin languished down the bottom with Lance Stroll 18th and Sebastian Vettel last, the pair being split by the second Haas of Mick Schumacher, who spent the middle part of the session in the garage. Sainz, who is set to start from the back of the grid after taking a new Ferrari engine, finally overhauled the Red Bull in the final 10 minutes by virtue of a 1m32.626s lap, proving quicker in the first and third sector. Perez got to within half a second of the Dutchman on his second attempt, until Ferrari's Sainz split the two Red Bulls with a 1m33.217s effort. Sergio Perez got the final hour of practice at a toasty Le Castellet underway, the Red Bull driver also the first driver to get a tentative time on the board with a 1m33.628s on medium Pirelli tyres. The reigning world champion immediately took eight tenths out of Perez' time to go top with a 1m32.837s on mediums and then improving to a 1m32.808s, just three tenths off Carlos Sainz' best time from FP2.

F1 drivers frustrated by pit limiter zone change (autosport.com)

Formula 1 drivers were left frustrated by a change to the Paul Ricard pitlane speed limiter zone introduced by the FIA ahead of the French Grand Prix.

Even Albon, who escaped sanction at the time, conceded that he was at fault. He also noted that the white line rule provides a sufficient deterrent to abuse of track limits. When an informal vote was taken on whether it was a just penalty, all drivers bar Alonso and teammate Esteban Ocon voted yes. Secondly, it means that drivers carry less speed as they leave the pits and thus makes it harder for them to defend their position into Turn 1 when emerging from a stop. However, after considering the matter overnight Freitas explained in his latest notes that "the deterrents ("baguette kerbs") adjacent to the track at the exit of T5 and T15 have been removed." Freitas wrote: "There is an active digital panel placed on top of the pit wall adjacent to the pit exit (driver's right). Each time a car is leaving the pit lane this panel will display an arrow pointing to the left to inform drivers on track that a car is exiting the pitlane."

Charles Leclerc takes French F1 GP pole for Ferrari with help from ... (The Guardian)

Charles Leclerc claimed pole for the French F1 GP ahead of Max Verstappen, thanks in part to driving in the slipstream of his teammate Carlos Sainz.

The 37-year-old Hamilton is in his 16th season in the sport in which he has already matched Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles and is the most successful driver with 103 poles and 103 wins. Verstappen now has a 38-point advantage over Leclerc in second place and 57 points on Pérez. Hamilton will reach his 300th race this weekend but it is unlikely to be the celebratory affair he might have hoped for. It was a vital advantage as Verstappen, following him on track, was breathing down his neck and crossed the line just eight thousandths of a second down, setting up a mighty head-to-head for the final runs. This is Leclerc’s 16th career pole and his seventh this season, in which he has demonstrated remarkable pace over the single lap. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were in fourth and sixth, with McLaren’s Lando Norris was fifth.

OPINION: Lewis Hamilton appears unlikely to extend his tally of seven Formula 1 world championships in 2022, as Mercedes tries to recover the ground it has lost with its new car. The drivers aren't exactly happy with that in practice, but it does afford the uniformity that they desired... The Red Bull and Ferrari battle for supremacy takes to Formula 1's next battleground at the Paul Ricard circuit.

F1 drivers frustrated by pit limiter zone change (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Formula 1 drivers were left frustrated by a change to the Paul Ricard pitlane speed limiter zone introduced by the FIA ahead of the French GP.

F1: Mercedes' poor performance "a slap in the face" - Wolff · RaceFans (RaceFans)

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff didn't think it was possible they would end qualifying so far behind Ferrari and Red Bull.

“We are seeing within one session we go from totally uncompetitive in the first sector to – second run in Q3 – we’re the best in sector one. “Then we went to Austria, a track where we are normally not competitive at all and we could clearly see the signs why we were not competitive but we were close. “We were slowly but surely working our way back to the front-runners and there were good signs in Silverstone,” Wolff told media including RaceFans today.

Christian Horner's huge row with Toto Wolff over F1 rule changes ... (Daily Express)

CHRISTIAN HORNER once had a huge row with Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, with one witness claiming the Austrian 'lost his s***'.

"I'm not only talking about Mercedes - all of the cars suffered in some way or other in Baku and still do here. Horner, the Team Principal of Red Bull, has branded claims his team could be impacted by new rules as "total rubbish" after Mercedes' Wolff said some of his rivals were using "flexi-floors" to give their cars a performance advantage. "Over the course of the season, each driver is required to give up one of their first practice sessions for a young driver. This week, Christian Horner and Toto Wolff have revived their war of words from 2021. In the 2022 F1 season, all teams are required to hand a "young driver" a spot in two first practice sessions. "And team principals trying to manipulate what is being said in order to keep their competitive advantage and trying to play political games when the FIA tries to come up with a quick solution to at least put the cars in a better position is disingenuous and that's what I said.

Bryce's Bets -- F1's French Grand Prix (Sports Illustrated)

If you plan on laying down a few bucks on Sunday's race, our Bryce Kelly gives you some pointers on who may pay off the best for you.

The odds are around –115 to –130. Look for Ricciardo to stay in the backend of the top ten. Bet on Leclerc to continue his winning ways and close the gap in the championship. Gasly then lost that pace and failed to get out of Q1. He will line up 14th due to other drivers having penalties. The French driver struggled to qualify for his home grand Prix after looking quick in practice. If you want to go high risk and high reward go with Leclerc. This is a bet to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

Autosport writers' favourite F1 French Grands Prix (autosport.com)

Formula 1 returns to the birthplace of grand prix racing this weekend with the French GP at Paul Ricard. As one of the oldest events in all of motorsport, ...

In the meantime, Mika Hakkinen had been in a hurry at the start of the race and had carved his way though the pack - getting through Frentzen and Alesi to climb up to second from 14th on the grid. Whether you believe EJ's parable of the man with the brolly, or whether the team had just taken a gamble and won big, it set Frentzen on course for an unlikely title bid. A safety car period followed the stops, as Alesi threw his Sauber into the gravel, with the race brought to a restart on lap 35. Per EJ, the team was informed that the rain wasn't about to stop, and thus the Jordan pit crew filled Frentzen's car up to the maximum and sent him on his way, intending not to stop again. Barrichello led again, passed by Hakkinen again as Frentzen looked good for third - but the top two had to stop again for a splash-and-dash to the finish. Without the presence of his arch rival at the front and Mansell mired in the pack, Prost eased to clear towards a fourth home race win. A more traditional front-running trio of David Coulthard, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Michael Schumacher occupied the next three positions on the grid. Pressure applied by the British driver saw Patrese make a crucial mistake and spin off, opening the path for Mansell to take second place. In fact, due to the early chaos and an incredible first lap to go from 16th to ninth, F1 debutant Jean Alesi became the surprise closest contender to Prost, rising to second in his Tyrrell before pitting. The race was immediately red flagged, as the 1985 British Formula 3 champion stepped out of his rolled March and remarkably was relatively unscathed. But wind the time back to Friday qualifying and something truly remarkable occurred - Minardi topped the times. But Maserati’s challenge had grown stronger and there were three A6GCMs in the top five.

F1 rivals posturing over 2023 rules challenge, says Wolff (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has accused Formula 1 rivals of posturing over a potential challenge to the FIA's planned floor changes for 2023.

"Clearly when you're running in the front you just want to just make sure that nothing changes, and when you're not running at the front, you want to make sure that a lot changes. "Trying to work with the FIA is always part of it. He sits in his office, he doesn't call anyone, and does his thing?" "The cars are way too stiff and they bounce. "I think it's just business as usual," he said about the latest row. "No team is ever going to go legal against the FIA, number one.

F1: Verstappen wins French Grand Prix after Leclerc crashes out ... (The Guardian)

Max Verstappen won at the Circuit Paul Ricard, with Lewis Hamilton in second and George Russell in third.

Carlos Sainz is in sixth, and carrying the flag alone for Ferrari now. 28/53 A Verstappen error, and Hamilton, in his 300th race, who is flying along, could be in clover. 30/53 George Russell will not after all get to third as Carlos Sainz has overtaken him, and is driving an absolute blinder on those medium tyres. Nicholas Latifi, not for the first time, has come to grief in the Williams and Kevin Magnussen in the Haas clatters into him. “He just turned into me,” says Russell. Sainz pits, and takes the penalty after a change of tyres. Russell thinks he had the honour, and getting angry. “I don’t understand.” Here’s a yellow flag, as Guanyu Zhou is off the side of the track, and a virtual safety car. 50/53 Guanyu Zhou’s car is shuffled off the side of the track, and Verstappen is asking his team whether he can come in for a stop, perhaps to try and get a fastest lap. 51/53 Russell has his third place, and he will claim justice for that previous contretemps. and his clash with Russell is the key battle with Hamilton and Verstappen safely away up ahead. Verstappen, up ahead, takes the 27th win of his career, and Hamilton takes his first second place of the season as Russell completes the podium, Sainz chasing down Perez for fifth. Hamilton says “great job, guys” to Toto Wolff in the Mercedes garage, and “well done, George”.

F1 French GP: Verstappen dominates after Leclerc crashes out of lead (autosport.com)

Max Verstappen led home Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to win Formula 1's 2022 French Grand Prix – a race that title rival Charles Leclerc had crashed of ...

Tsunoda stopped on the same lap as Leclerc’s crash as a result of the floor damage he had picked up in the lap one clash with Ocon that had dropped him to the rear of the pack. That was behind Perez, who lost out to Russell after the Mercedes driver jumped ahead of the Red Bull when the VSC ended as they approached the final corner and then soaked up pressure over the final three laps to seal third. On lap 42, Russell made a late move to the inside of the Turn 8 part of the Mistral chicane and when Perez turned in the pair came close to crashing before the Red Bull scampered across Turn 9 and stayed ahead – to Russell’s frustration but with the stewards’ quickly deciding the incident did not merit investigation. From there, Verstappen was untroubled to the finish and came home with a 10.5s margin of victory ahead of Hamilton, who was likewise unthreatened in second – this was despite a brief moment of worry for the leaders when Zhou Guanyu stopped in the Turn 6 runoff and triggered a brief virtual safety car. But just after it had warned Leclerc to look after his mediums, the race was turned on its head when Leclerc crashed out at Le Beausset – losing the rear of his F1-75 in a mistake while running close to the edge of the track deep into the high-speed hairpin on his stressed rubber. The Dutchman was now the one seemingly struggling for grip as at one stage he slipped off the road at Turn 6, so picking up his first track limits violation, and by lap 14 he had had fallen out of DRS range as Leclerc began to increase his pace back towards where he had been lapping in the early stages.

We're really building great momentum in Asia. We had great races in China, Singapore and Australia, and Vietnam was coming online.
