Tesla's Second-Quarter Earnings Hurt By Supply Chain Problems ... (The New York Times)

Tesla Profit Falls in Second Quarter as Supply Chain Problems Hurt ... The world's largest maker of electric cars struggled with production problems in China.

“We are focused on a record-breaking second half of 2022,” Tesla said in its earnings presentation. “While Musk’s impressive innovation has served the company well, his personal flair is starting to raise governance questions.” The market for electric vehicles is becoming more competitive, and traditional carmakers are eroding Tesla’s lead. Tesla has not been able to increase production at new factories in Austin, Texas, and near Berlin as planned. Getting them ramped up and restoring the Shanghai factory to normal operations are Tesla’s main priority, he said. And earnings in the quarter exceeded analyst estimates. The company said on Wednesday that it had sold about 75 percent of its Bitcoin by the end of June. Sales fell to $16.9 billion from $18.8 billion in the first quarter. But she expressed concern about Tesla’s exposure to Bitcoin. Compared with the second quarter of 2021, profit nearly doubled. (The deliveries were up 26 percent from a year earlier.) But the last quarter was bumpy.

But that's a testament to our software team that we're able to roll a new chip into the car, write a whole new patch of software for that chip and -- without interrupting production. That's outside of Dojo in terms of the -- I guess, on the inference side, you're certainly doing that in the car, but what about sort of the more mundane areas like microcontrollers and the like? They're very -- they're smart and they're hardworking. So the following question is with regards to the ramp of production in Austin and Berlin. How is the situation with regards to supply of semiconductors, battery cells and other components? And I think we will have -- I'm highly confident we will solve full self-driving and it still seems to be this year. And that makes the planes lighter and better. And now let's go to the questions from investors. We are expecting to be -- still expecting to be in production with the Cybertruck in the middle of next year. So -- and that mileage is growing exponentially. If you've got to be -- the car has got to be crunching to trigger the seatbelt tensioner. So also making good progress with production ramp with Berlin. We achieved an important milestone of 1,000 cars a week in June. And we're expecting -- sorry, our Giga Texas to exceed the 1,000-vehicle per week milestone and hopefully in the next few months. My name is Martin Viecha, VP of investor relations; and I'm joined today by Elon Musk, Zachary Kirkhorn, and a number of other executives.
