In India, Pixel 6a is available in two classic, yet modern colours - Charcoal and Chalk. Pixel 6a is powered by Google's own Tensor chipset, the first-ever chip designed by the company. It is the same chipset that also powers the premium Pixel 6 series phones -- Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Google Pixel 6a has a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display with 60Hz refresh rate. It is worth noting that Google does not include a case or a charger in the case, first-party versions of which both retail for £25. Both the Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel 6a will begin shipping on July 28. Typically, these retail for £99.99, just under half what the Pixel Buds Pro cost. Google's newest Pixel A-series phone brings the kind of camera excellence, powerful performance, and killer battery life we should all expect by now.

I tried taking a shot of this hanging planter on a cafe patio in my neighborhood and the thin rods affixing it to the roof became a problem that no amount of in-camera editing could fix. That applies to the Pixel 6a’s cameras, too. One of those features — one that Google helped pioneer — is Night Sight, the computational photo mode in Pixel phones that turns nighttime shots into something that’s not just visible, but attractive to look at. Tensor also has a hand in the Pixel 6a’s camera (more on that later), and I’m pleased to report software-based rendering tools like Night Sight and Portrait Mode do their thing so speedily that you’ll barely notice. It’s a small bummer, but the good news is you won’t need to charge the Pixel 6a that much anyway. For the Pixel 6 line in 2021, Google for the first time built its own custom chipset called Tensor to power the phones. However, the 12MP ultra-wide lens and 8MP selfie cam are the same as on Pixel 6. You shouldn’t be surprised, then, that the $450 Pixel 6a is probably the easiest new Android phone to recommend to anyone in the market for one right now. That figure is acceptable given that almost every iPhone ever made has gone with the same refresh rate, but we’re supposed to live in a better world now. Right away, anyone who has touched a Pixel 6 will notice the slight downsizing in the Pixel 6a. Last year’s Pixel 6 could link up with charging pads, but Google felt the need to cut that out, likely as a cost-saving measure. I’m glad to report you can mostly do that with the Pixel 6a, though any app like Twitter or Instagram with prominent UI features in the upper left corner of the screen were usually unreachable without assistance from my left hand.

The other approach is to invest a little more in those nice-to-have features, like a fast refreshing screen, but to include a cheaper processor and sacrifice a bit on performance. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched with Android 12, and it wasn’t exactly the best experience for early adopters since the first versions of the software were buggy. I shot a backlit video with the Pixel 5A at 4K / 60p and compared it to the 6A with the same settings. The 6A will get five years of security updates, the same as the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Google wouldn’t confirm to us how many OS platform upgrades the 6A will get, but the 6 and 6 Pro are promised three. Tensor adds a couple of interesting new features, but the foundation that the 6A’s camera is built on was already a strong one. One Tensor feature that’s available on the 6 and 6 Pro but missing from the 6A is Motion Mode. Google spokesperson Rebecca Pineiro says it isn’t enabled because of the 6A’s “hardware differences” from the 6 and 6 Pro. This is a feature that mimics the creative blur effects of long exposure and panning photography techniques — things that typically take time, special equipment, and practice to perfect. The 6 and 6 Pro can do a convincing impression of both effects with just one press of the shutter. The Pixel 6A carries an IP67 rating for water resistance, making it a little less robust than the IP68-rated Pixel 6 and 6 Pro — but not much. It’s more symbolic than anything that the 6A doesn’t use the new 50-megapixel sensor from the Pixel 6 because, in reality, photos from that new high-res sensor aren’t dramatically better than that of the older camera. For longevity and the very best performance, the 6A is the way to go. The Pixel 6A’s 12-megapixel f/1.7 main camera is borrowed from the Pixel 5A, with a couple of Tensor-enabled benefits. The 6A beats the A53 in a few ways, but as far as the screen goes, it’s all Samsung. So, should you consider the A53 over the 6A? It depends.

Still, there's plenty to like about the phone, so don't count it out yet. Table of Contents. Hardware, Design, and Build Quality The Display

One of the biggest differences between the Pixel 6 and the new Pixel 6a is the display. Plus, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro had wildly different battery life results depending on the user or reviewer. Just know that Google put the same high-performance Tensor chip from the Pixel 6 Pro in the budget-friendly Pixel 6a, and performance shouldn’t be an issue. The Pixel 6a is fast, fluid, and runs great. The Pixel 6a cameras are capable, but they’re not quite as good as the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Even the front-facing camera is still 8MP instead of 10MP, but it’ll certainly get the job done. Basically, the affordable Pixel 6a has the same solid camera experience we’ve all come to know and love. Going from a 120Hz display on my daily phone to the Pixel 6a made the refresh rate highly noticeable. In that sense, the Pixel 6a is perfect. With the Pixel 6a, we’re getting the same overall look, feel, and design as the flagship Pixel 6 series. It’s almost flat and not nearly as pronounced as the Pixel 6. The new Google Pixel 6a is arguable the best bang for your buck and easy to recommend. We’re also getting the same 12MP camera Google used since the Pixel 3, not the latest and greatest.

This affordable midrange phone checks off all the boxes but no longer has a sizable lead with its camera and software support.

On a similar note, the Pixel 6A does not feature wireless charging, nor does it have a MicroSD card slot or a headphone jack—features not everyone needs but would have been nice to have since they are available on similarly priced phones. (It absolutely doesn't feel like the cheap plastic on a lot of budget and midrange phones though.) The screen ratchets all the way up to 800 nits in high brightness mode, and I've had no issues reading on it these swelteringly hot days. Same with software support: The new Pixel has a good level of support, but what’s offered is not the best-in-class package that it used to be. The size is a big reason. It also packs a pretty good camera, but gone are the days when the camera on the midrange Pixel handily outclassed its peers.

My experience over the last two weeks with the Pixel 6a proves that your phone doesn't need to have the best parts and pieces to provide the best experience. One cost-cutting area for Google and the Pixel 6a is the material used on the outside of the phone. There are a few photos where it struggled with color saturation, but as you can see in the picture of the roses below, that's a tough picture to get right for any camera. To be fair, the only time I had issues with the sensor on the 6 Pro was when I tried to unlock the phone in direct sunlight -- it would fail more than not. The memory is another cost-saving measure, but I haven't noticed any issues with 6GB compared to the 6 Pro's 12GB of memory. There isn't a headphone jack to be found on the Pixel 6a, something that was included on the Pixel 5a and has, so far, been a staple feature of other entry-level phones. The dual 12-megapixel camera setup, on paper at least, looks like it'd take good, but not great, photos when compared to the 6 Pro's camera specs (50MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and 48MP telephoto). But the longer I used it, the more I felt like Goldilocks with the size of the 6a feeling just right. I've been using the Pixel 6a for the last two weeks, replacing an alternating rotation of the Pixel 6 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 as my main Android device. But because the $449 Pixel 6a is available to order starting today, July 21, with deliveries following a week later on July 28. There's a slight bump from the bar that stops the phone from lying flat on a desk, instead holding it up at a slight angle. The biggest challenge for the Pixel 6a is likely going to be the Pixel 6. While I find the Pixel 6 upgrades to be worth it, if you don’t particularly care about the camera and prefer a more pocketable phone, then the 6a is nothing but upside for you. The Pixel 6a is one of the best cheap phones out there. However, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are coming this fall, so this should be a short-lived problem for the 6a if Google hasn’t overstocked the Pixel 6. At $449, the relatively small Pixel 6a has the potential to be a giant in the mid-tier phone market. While these features are all great, the biggest advantage that Pixel 6a offers over most phones in this price range is the five years of security updates and three years of major OS updates. This means that on the back, you have a 12.2MP wide-angle at f/1.7 and a 12MP ultrawide at f/2.2. Flipping around to the front, you get an 8MP at f/2.0. Google remains the leader in computational photography, so it continues to squeeze some fantastic results out of this hardware, but it simply doesn’t compare to the Pixel 6’s updated camera hardware. But the step down when it comes to charging options is a disappointment and worth considering if you are deciding between it and the Pixel 6. Our lab testing was pretty glowing for the Pixel 6a with the phone reproducing 78.7% of the DCI-P3 color gamut in its Natural color setting. The Pixel 6a has a pair of stereo speakers onboard and they do an adequate job for watching videos or a little background music, although I’d certainly recommend turning to a pair of wireless headphones to properly enjoy the latter. The Pixel 6a keeps it simple with a single $449 configuration that includes 128GB of storage paired with 6GB of RAM and a 6.1-inch, OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. But the “3D thermoformed composite back” (catchy name) of the 6a just doesn’t match up with the soft-touch “bio-resin” of the Pixel 5.

Plus, the Pixel Buds Pro come with swappable ear tips for what should be a more custom — and therefore comfortable — fit.
