Another good test for Steven Gerrard's side sees two teams gain valuable minutes at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Archer's composed finish is the ...
At the other end, the 18 year-old was solid and dealt with any danger well. The 26 year-old linked well down the right with Kesler-Hayden at times, and worked non-stop out of possession as always. Fan favourite Emi Buendía put in a trademark performance at the Queensland Community Bank Stadium, demonstrating his raw creative abilities throughout his 45 minutes on the pitch. Everyone was glad to see the number four back out on the field, and there were no post-injury concerns for the defender who looked as accomplished as expected alongside partner in crime Tyrone Mings. Konsa tried to top his return off with a speculative, outside of the foot effort from a corner which (sadly) sailed well wide of the mark. The Burkino Faso captain hit a strike just over in what was one of his side’s best chances of the half, and the 26 year-old enjoyed linking with overlapping full-back Matty Cash down the right too. Due to the run of the play in the first-half, striker Danny Ings struggled to get near the ball and make his mark on the game. A somewhat sub-standard showing from Villa’s Brazilian number 23 who had to drop deep throughout his performance to get a touch on the ball. A typical John McGinn display in Townsville; plenty of energy and tackles combined with moments of intricacy and flair. With every game, Boubacar Kamara looks more and more accomplished, and makes a case to be one of the most shrewd signings across the transfer window. Carlos looks like the real deal in claret and blue, and his first-half partnership with Calum Chambers formed a superb, stable barrier that kept Brisbane quiet for the majority of the opening 45 minutes. Villa’s number two bombed down the right throughout the first 45 minutes, and put a number of teasing crosses into the Brisbane box. Captaining his side for the first-time will have pleased Villa’s number one, who played his first minutes this pre-season.
Just signed Boubacar Kamara shone in the gloomy first half, but ex-Barcelona sensation Philippe Coutinho had little effect before being replaced at ...
Former Queens Park Rangers and Southampton striker Charlie Austin made his debut for the Roar after coming on in the 69th minute but scuffed his only chance. Roar were hoping to build on their gutsy effort against Leeds last week, where they narrowly lost 2-1.Villa, however, dictated early through a dominant Kamara but they lacked the finishing touches. Here's the first-half player ratings from a pretty drab showing here in Townsville, with Danny Ings going closest with a dinked effort late on.
Went to dink Freke in goal but the stopper got his body to it and the ball struck the outside of the post and away. Danny Ings: McGinn popped a ball into Ings as the striker looked to turn in on goal but his touch was too heavy. Gerrard turned away perplexed as Traore gave the ball away on one occasion, while the Burkinabe went close when he brilliantly cut in on his favoured left peg. Got stuck in, as he always does, and used the ball well whenever he had it. Villa, though, haven't tested Roar stopper Macklin Freke with the likes of John McGinn, Leon Bailey and Bertrand Traore all firing over the crossbar, while Danny Ings forced a good save from Freke late on. Villa's best player of that half given his output going forward, put in a ridiculous crossfield pass straight to Ings as he couldn't convert.
Ahmed Elmohamady served Aston Villa with distinction during four years as a player, and he has been doing so once again in a new role as Club Ambassador.
