SINGAPORE - Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa flew into Singapore from the Maldives on Thursday (July 14) evening, after fleeing Sri Lanka amid a deepening crisis and widespread protests there. It is understood he has tendered his resignation.

Mr Rajapaksa, who fled to the Maldives from Sri Lanka, was earlier expected to leave Male on Wednesday night. Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror reported that he did not board a Singapore Airlines flight late on Wednesday night because he was nervous about flying with civilian passengers. Ms Fatimah, 52, said she was upset by the unravelling situation in Sri Lanka. She has family there, including a brother whom she speaks with daily and who has been badly affected by the fuel crisis. Mr Rajapaksa was not spotted in any of the vehicles. Imagine how much the low-wages workers are suffering…We are gifted to stay in this blessed country." Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum," the spokesman said.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has landed in Singapore on a flight from Maldives after fleeing his country in the wake of anti-government protests.

He left the Maldivian capital Malé on board a "Saudi flight," a high-ranking security source in Colombo told CNN. The flight landed in Singapore at 7:17 p.m. local time Thursday, according to the Changi Airport website. An army sergeant had also been injured, it added. "It is confirmed that Mr. Rajapaksa has been allowed entry into Singapore on a private visit. People are no longer able to drive to work, so they cycle instead. Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum," the Singapore Foreign Ministry statement read.
