All the latest from Down Under as Jesse Marsch's side take on Brisbane Roar in the first of three games in Australia.
Leeds attack seems to be killed off by a Brisbane interception, but Forshaw is supporting from deep, picks up the loose ball and immediately feeds James into space down the right channel. Incidentally, the Spanish forward went to watch State of Origin last night with Liam Cooper and Dan James. Winger takes a touch and then drives it into the bottom, near corner. Bobs and weaves in off the right flank, one vs one, and finds the angle for a cultured, curled effort of his left peg for the far corner. Bamford with his back to goal on the edge of a crowded box. Klaesson gets beaten to the bounce of a pass and then Davis can't quite get a foot on the ball as the last man on the goal line. He goes right with James, who then clips a high ball into the back stick. Leeds looking a little ragged defending in the past few minutes. Adams and Gyabi sitting in the double pivot. No real sights of goal for Bamford or the forwards in a little while. Meanwhile, Brisbane are benefiting from beating Leeds on the break. It makes this year’s pre-season a lot more interesting than in some previous years, with many Whites fans hoping to catch the games, no matter how early some of them kick off.
Leeds United starting XI: Klaesson; Kristensen, Koch, Struijk, Harrison; Roca, Forshaw; James, Rodrigo, Aaronson; Gelhardt.
Joe Gelhardt is given the nod in attack, leading the line whilst Patrick Bamford has to settle for a place on the bench. Marc Roca and Adam Forshaw line up in midfield with recent arrival Tyler Adams only on the bench. Usual left back Junior Firpo is out injured and whilst we have seen Harrison at left wing back on occasion, this now looks to be a chance for him in a back four.
Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is absent for the club's first pre-season match in Australia, as they take on Brisbane Roar. Leeds have a strong side…
Meslier’s fitness has always being something of a tightrope for Leeds to walk, knowing that him being absent has a huge impact on the side. The first name on Jesse Marsch’s team sheet was enough to instil a bit of panic right away for fans with confirmation that Kristoffer Klaesson is starting, while Illan Meslier is nowhere to be found: Leeds have a strong side travelling with them Down Under, with a bunch of fresh faces joining the side that survived relegation on the final day.
Leeds United raced into a 2-0 lead in Thursday's pre-season friendly against Brisbane Roar via a terrific header from young striker Joe Gelhardt.
Leeds United started their Australian tour with an energetic and convincing 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Cbus Super Stadium in Queensland.
Bamford then saw another shot turned around for a corner in the closing stages, before Jez Lofthouse spurned a big moment to level the game. And Jesse Marsch’s side did not have long to wait before scoring the opener. And with their hosts sat deep, it only seemed a matter of time before the breakthrough came. Sadly for the American and Leeds, the instant strike was ruled out by a linesman’s flag. With a backheel taking Klaesson out the picture, he twice failed to control with the goal at his mercy, allowing Leeds to clear their lines. Leeds made a bright start to the second half, putting the pressure on the hosts with Darko Gyabi clipped a ball into the mixer and almost causing an own goal.

In the final few seconds, Brisbane went even closer to equalising than their previous attempt. With the game edging towards its conclusion in Queensland, Bamford went close to extending the lead down the opposite end. Brisbane did have attacking moments of their own and with five minutes to go until the interval, they got themselves back in the match following a quick counter attack. Jay O’Shea found space at the back post and picked his spot, but at full stretch, Kristoffer Klaesson produced an excellent diving save to tip the ball around the post. A clever ball from Adam Forshaw - who was wearing the captain’s armband from the start - found James on the right of the area. The closest either side came was through Gelhardt, who narrowly curled wide from the edge of the box.

In controlling long periods of the match, Leeds were always at risk of being countered and that was Brisbane’s most profitable route to goal. Marsch acknowledged that was something he did not want to see in his system which does favour high pressing and a high line. The Wales international was playing off the right flank in a role Marsch has encouraged him to take on. What’s more, he was only on the pitch for half an hour. Marsch stopped short of backing Leif Davis to even be at Elland Road by the end of the transfer window last week. That’s entirely understandable and nobody should criticise him for that first performance, but it at least gives Marsch a marking post for what he has at his disposal. Jesse Marsch only mentioned it yesterday, but the Leeds United head coach was quick to back up his comments on the left-back problem. He was thrown into that position from the start against Brisbane Roar.

Leeds United could sign a “bigger name” than one Paris Saint-Germain player this transfer window.
With Raphinha heading to Barcelona, they are losing a lot of firepower, though Marsch will be expecting Luis Sinisterra to soften the blow. Speaking to GMS about Kalimuendo and Leeds’ plans to bring in a new striker this summer, the journalist said: “I think that there are loads of different names on the radar. I think they might even surprise us and get a bigger name that suddenly doesn’t fit in at another club.

Gyabi was another to step off the bench at the interval and got 45 minutes under his belt in front of large pockets of travelling Leeds support. He looked cool in possession and showed off his passing range with some delightful lofted passes in key areas. He replaced Dan James after half an hour and managed to catch the eye early with a couple of tidy touches on the ball and some neat footwork. Leeds’ attack wasn’t firing on all cylinders against the Roar and it might take some time before connections and understandings are built between the new signings and their teammates. It’s probably to be expected, though, given it was his first outing since representing the United States against El Salvador in June. He scored 10 goals in all competitions last season for Red Bull Salzburg and it’s not hard to see why.
Patrick Bamford has reflected on his long-awaited Leeds United return and revealed his goal for his Whites comeback.
“Every day I was out injured, that was my focus and working hard every day to try and get back on the pitch.” “But it was nice to be back out there, a bit rusty but it will get better with each game.” “But I came back and once I got injured against Wolves, I just set in my mind that I have a goal to aim towards and trying my best to put myself in contention for the World Cup.
