Seven drivers were summoned for radio messages during a second formation lap as the sprint start was slightly delayed due to Alonso's and Zhou's problems. “Probably overheated a bit the tyres, running behind Charles. I had to back off and finish the race.” “Drivers are not free to leave when they want,” F1 said. The Ferraris brushed each other when Sainz tried to pass on lap six, with Leclerc holding him off. “We’re both going to make Max’s life as difficult as possible in the rest of the championship. Later. he added, “I don’t know the rules of engagement, we are not the ones to decide. “That’s just a limitation we have, we still need to lose weight with the car.” Esteban Ocon was sixth for Alpine followed by Kevin Magnussen of Haas and Lewis Hamilton, who scored one point. Lewis Hamilton has criticised the fans who cheered his crash in Austrian GP qualifying, calling the reaction "mind-blowing".
"Then I had the same thing at Turn 3, so I'm just grateful to get around the first lap. He then explained: "I obviously had two come around me into Turn 1 and Pierre moved across on me, and there was nowhere I could really go. except that we're slower than the Haas on the straights!" "I think [Sergio] Perez is a realistic battle we can have but there is only a limited amount you can do overnight. Verstappen was booed by a section of Silverstone fans at Hamilton's home British GP last weekend, albeit not after a crash. "It is mind-blowing that people would do that, knowing how dangerous our sport is," he explained.

The McLarens will also be hoping to gain a lot of ground in the 24-lap sprint race, as Friday's qualifying was not great for Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. For them, the start will be especially important as, in terms of race pace, the Mercedes seems quite a bit stronger. Sergio Perez set the fourth-fastest time, but because his lap time in Q2 was later ruled invalid by the stewards, he must start from 13th in Spielberg. As a result, many drivers move up a place.

Zhou Guanyu was 14th, with Alex Albon in the upgraded Williams 15th and the Haas duo of Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen, who will start the Sprint inside the top-seven, 16th and 18th respectively. Carlos Sainz gave Ferrari fans plenty to smile about as he set an impressive pace in the second and final practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, with his team mate Charles Leclerc second at the Red Bull Ring.

As Perez continued to miss out on the fight at the front of the leaderboard, it allowed the Alpines to come to the fore in the overall times as Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon traded places. Lance Stroll pipped Gasly, while Sebastian Vettel ran 13th fastest - his session including a run over the serrated kerb on the edge of the final corner to shed a chunk of carbonfibre. He sat on a 1m09.240s, 0.3s adrift of Verstappen, while splitting the Ferrari pair, who then allowed a couple of errors to slip in - Leclerc running off at Turn 3, Sainz locking up at Turn 1. Russell entered the session after 11 minutes following repairs to the floor and gearbox after his Q3 shunt at the final corner, the Mercedes emerging on soft tyres to run third quickest as part of the race runs. The defending champion ended the session third, dropping 0.168s adrift of the quickest Ferrari as Verstappen ended the practice running at Red Bull’s home track on a 1m08.778s. It was with 25 minutes of the hour remaining that the Ferraris surged towards the top of the timing screens as they bolted on a set of the fastest-available C5 soft tyres.

At the start of lap four, Hamilton fights back to take 10th place off Albon up the inside at Turn 1. It creates wheel-to-wheel contact and pops Gasly into the spin. Vettel was attacking into Turn 7, but two into one doesn't go and the contact sends the Aston Martin off. Norris and Ricciardo have already got by the Williams driver, but that'll hurt his finishing position late on. Perhaps this isn't so odd, but this exact situation happened to Hamilton in the Imola sprint race. Perez is chasing down Russell for fourth but at his current pace won't catch the Mercedes before the finish. Albon has punted Vettel into the gravel! Are they here to stay and increase, is it time to end the experiment or does the variety add the right kind of spice? He only needs one more place to totally erode his grid drop from qualifying. Next lap around Sainz tries it again, up the inside at Turn 3 and then around the outside at Turn 4, but Leclerc hangs him out to dry and his team-mate has to back out of it. He's up to eighth. Once again Schumacher defends resolutely from Hamilton between Turns 3 and 4.

Fernando Alonso says his Alpine Formula 1 car suffered a 'full blackout' on the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix's sprint, which he failed to start.
"It's going to be frustrating with the DRS trains and things like that. "Because they weren't lining up in the starting grid, we tried to be ready, but it didn't work with the second battery either so as I said, there is something bigger going on." "We tried to fire up with an external battery, but it didn't work either, so there is something bigger going on there and let's try to fix it for tomorrow.

Despite the possibility of a pitlane start, the two-time champion would not take part at all in the sprint race. Verstappen was able to stretch the legs of his RB18 to take the gap up towards 3s but in the final few laps, Leclerc could lap a tenth or two faster to gradually chip away at the margin. He put his nose in front of Verstappen in the braking zone of Turn 3 but on the outside and off the racing line, he ran wide and then the subsequent oversteer on the less grippy asphalt allowed Leclerc to accelerate away faster and reclaim second place with a run into Turn 4. The Ferraris continued to dice, with Sainz seemingly carrying an early pace advantage to try and leapfrog Leclerc on the outside of Turn 3 into 4, with the red car appears to rub. With Leclerc battling Verstappen, Sainz was given room to dive ahead into the first corner and a strong exit enabled the Spaniard to move his Ferrari to the outside and attempt a pass. The Red Bull driver needed to defend into Turn 1 and 3 against an initially strong Ferrari threat, but as Leclerc and Carlos Sainz went wheel-to-wheel, the defending champion was able to march away to a relatively smooth triumph.

At a high of 21C, the race is likely to be a little cooler than Saturday’s running, which should give the drivers a little bit of an easier time and prevent degradation getting too high. It could also make the first stint tricky for drivers staring on the mediums, as we saw some drivers start to struggle a little with degradation towards the end of the Sprint if they had pushed a bit too hard early on. Rain is expected overnight, though, and it could be heavy and even continue throughout most of the morning.

We were better when we were in clean air, but we know what we can do better for the race. It didn’t feel bad in practice, but we need to understand why it didn’t work as well in the Sprint. We had nothing to lose, so we’ll reset and see what we can do tomorrow.” That was very strange, and the first time happening to me; I had to do the whole switch-off procedure, and that took a bit longer but luckily, we got going again. There is still a long race ahead of us and we will try our best to move up the order tomorrow." “It was great to get the pole yesterday and to get the victory in the Sprint race and retain that for the race tomorrow is fantastic. Esteban was on a good pace today and we were able to learn some good lessons about the behavior of the tyres, which we will use to maximize our strategy tomorrow. “It was a good drive with some nice battling, but we ran out of laps to make it higher than tenth – it’s a shame the points only go down to eighth! "After such an incredible effort from the mechanics to get the cars built and able to race, that was a bit of a disappointing performance in speed terms. Tomorrow will again be a case of two against two, as Sergio Perez made up several places this afternoon and so the contribution of both our drivers will be essential if we are to get the result we are after." "There are lessons we can take from the Sprint race to make sure we are on the podium tomorrow. “It was a good race and recovery, I had a good start and kept out of trouble, it was tricky with Lewis and a lot of people going side by side into turn three. It was a case of 'job done' for Red Bull in the Sprint, with Max Verstappen leading away from pole and keeping that position all the way to the chequered flag to seal a commanding victory.

The Mercedes driver's race was notable for an entertaining dice with both Haas cars and then a DRS pass on Esteban Ocon. Vettel too was reprimanded by 5s as part of a litany of track limits penalties dished out through the field. But he was placed on a two-stop strategy rather than three and delivered a remarkable surge up the order from ninth. On lap 33, Leclerc closed within DRS range of Verstappen before another cleanly decided move for first place at Turn 3. At the end of lap 58, Leclerc used the slower conditions to stop for mediums and was followed by Verstappen for the run to the line. Sainz was then about to demote Verstappen for a Ferrari 1-2 but on the run to Turn 4, running in the Red Bull's wake, a wisp of smoke started to waft out of his engine cover.

Both Gasly and Russell got five-second penalties. NO!" said Sainz on team radio. He added on his win: "I definitely needed that one." On the first lap, Perez went around the outside of Russell before he was squeezed and then by the Mercedes. He continued after a pit-stop but had too much damage, and too little pace, and was retired. Sainz was on the same strategy to Leclerc and had DRS on Verstappen before his extremely unlucky DNF. Sainz's engine blew and then caught fire to cost the Spaniard a podium to follow up his British GP win. Leclerc had gone three months without a win and two without even a podium coming into the Spielberg race, but he was a man on a mission on Sunday and not even the world champion and title leader could stop him.

We managed to make it stick until the end and I am so happy,” said Leclerc. “I was scared.

Russell got a five-second time penalty for the Perez incident but placed fourth. Leclerc moved up to second overall but is still a distant 38 points behind Verstappen — 208 vs. “It’s great that we’re finally having a normal race on my side.” Unharmed, he sat on the grass to contemplate his bad luck. Even more impressive since Mercedes had to repair both cars after a late crash in Friday's sprint qualifying. The Mercedes driver’s race was notable for an entertaining dice with both Haas cars and then a DRS pass on Esteban Ocon. Vettel too was reprimanded by 5s as part of a litany of track limits penalties dished out through the field. The Ferrari’s engine then failed spectacularly, with Sainz trying to pull up on the exit road as flames burst. But he was placed on a two-stop strategy rather than three and delivered a remarkable surge up the order from ninth. On lap 33, Leclerc closed within DRS range of Verstappen before another cleanly decided move for first place at Turn 3. Then on lap 11, Leclerc made his move – slicing down the inside into Turn 3. Perez eventually recovered to the pits for hards, although would retire on lap 17. Verstappen, slower in the opening phase, gave his chief title rival room and barely put up a fight. At the end of lap 58, Leclerc used the slower conditions to stop for mediums and was followed by Verstappen for the run to the line. Sainz was then about to demote Verstappen for a Ferrari 1-2 but on the run to Turn 4, running in the Red Bull’s wake, a whisp of smoke started to waft out of his engine cover. Again, Leclerc was quickly into a rhythm on the white-wall rubber to only two laps later gain DRS on Verstappen, the Ferrari moving to the outside for the run to Turn 3. That prompted Verstappen to put for a set of hard tyres at the end of lap 13, but he was delayed with a 3.2s stop courtesy of a slow front-left change to emerge in traffic.

Sainz was right on Verstappen’s tail but on Lap 57, the Ferrari driver slowed and pulled off the track. Verstappen tried to hit back on Lap 13, locking up into Turn 4, and soon complied with the message to box, pitting for hards at the end of the lap. I had this problem with the throttle and it would get stuck at 20 or 30% throttle in the low speed, so it was very tricky but we managed to make it stick until the end and I'm so, so happy. Ferrari are on a roll, Red Bull still however in the lead of both championships. The Dane pitted but Schumacher stayed out, the Red Bull of Verstappen in his mirrors before blasting past on the run to Turn 3 on the next tour. The reigning champion radioed to say that the car was “unpredictable” as he stared down a 1.5 second deficit to the Monegasque – aiming to protect a four-second advantage on Sainz. With Lewis Hamilton taking too much of the kerb out of Turn 1 on Lap 4, Mick Schumacher blazed past for P7 and had eyes on his Haas team mate up ahead. Ocon edged ahead but lost out to the Briton entering Turn 3 on the following lap. With Sainz right on Verstappen’s tail, the Spaniard suddenly slowed – the fire at the rear of his Ferrari signalling the end of his race. George Russell was a distant fourth having started there, the Mercedes driver losing time in his first pit stop – a five-second penalty also tacked on as he collided with Red Bull's Sergio Perez early on. Leclerc took his second stop on Lap 51 and retook the lead on Lap 53. With Sainz challenging Verstappen for P2, the Dutchman pitted again on Lap 37.

Formula 1 has raised reports of female fans suffering sexual harassment with the Austrian Grand Prix promoter and security at the event.
The fact is that F1 – like the wider motorsport world, sport in general, and large sections of society – is a male-dominated environment. And whether those of us who like to think we’re very welcoming and inclusive want to admit it or not, that environment can be extremely hostile towards female participants. It is one of F1’s many conscious and unconscious biases, so can manifest itself in several ways.

I explained to them, if you can come out after the start behind each other, the second one thinks he is faster because you are nine-tenths of a second faster because of the DRS effect. The duo tried to hold off Lewis Hamilton during the Sprint, and Magnussen managed to stay ahead of the Mercedes star. But after the checkered flag, he appeared to encounter an issue of his own as he stopped on the exit of Turn 1. The duo scored a double points finish, and now Alpine and McLaren are tied at 81 points in the constructor standings, trailing Mercedes by a whooping 156 points. “First at pick up and then at the end it would not come back to zero. “I saw in my mirrors that the car was catching [on] fire, but at the same time, I was pressing the brake,” Sainz said in the post-race press conference. “Attending the Austrian Grand Prix or any GP should never be a source of anxiety and pain for fans and something must be clone to ensure that races are safe spaces for all,” he added. “I can also confirm that it is bad,” wrote another user on Twitter, who claimed they were targeted within an hour and a half of arriving at their campsite at the track. “We have been made aware of reports that some fans have been subject to completely unacceptable comments by others at the event,” said the spokesperson.

I think he was just a bit too keen, ran into me, and I was off in the gravel. “Nicholas suffered with some floor damage early in the race, which cost him a lot of downforce and made the car very difficult to drive. “The whole race we were more or less matching the McLarens, we hit a bit of traffic here and there but I was really happy with our pace and we’ve definitely made a step forward this weekend. “I was hoping for points today, that was the target, and it’s a bit disappointing to be finishing just outside the top ten. The pace in the car was reasonable and we got the points that we wanted, so happy in the end. We looked strong yesterday, but today we spent the first part of the race stuck in a train and then struggled with the hard tyre. Big thanks to everyone for working so hard at the track and back home, we made a good recovery from Friday to score some decent points." "I had a bit of an engine issue all race so I was just praying to God that it wouldn’t blow up, which it didn’t, so I’m super thankful for that so I could finish the race without a problem. As a team, we are heading in the right direction and we have good momentum before heading to Paul-Ricard, one of the team's home races, and of course mine too. We had a lot of damage to the car and we were going nowhere so we had to retire. Quite soon I felt it wasn’t going to be a one-stop race just because of the way the tires were behaving – the winds were very different and difficult to manage. To score a single point on this race is a bit of a shame, but we can be very happy with our overall pace and performance as a team.”

“As Formula 1, if we manage to find these people, we need to take hard actions. A normal human being, I think, should think like that and should behave like that. The Red Bull Ring has a distinct music festival-like atmosphere owing the campgrounds and caravan sites encircling the small track. “We just need to target these guys and pick them out and say, ‘You’,” he said. It didn’t actually do anything — there was no funding towards anything, there was no program to actually create change and spark that conversation. We Race as One was all good and well, but it was just words.

It all got a bit heated between Leclerc and Sainz in the early laps of yesterday’s race with some intense on-track battling which allowed the Dutchman to escape down the road. Lap 24: So to recap, Leclerc leads from Sainz, Verstappen and Hamilton. Leclerc did overtake Verstappen on track but then the Red Bull driver pitted for his hard tyres. Here, he'll be attempting to win his fourth Austrian GP from five attempts this afternoon which would make him the most successful driver at this event in history. Lap 10: Leclerc makes a huge dive on Verstappen at turn three but the Dutch driver just about stays infront of his championship rival for now. Lap 58: SAINZ IS OUT!!! His car is on fire and he's forced to pull over at the side of the track. Lap 55: Leclerc once again leads the Austrian Grand Prix as he overtakes Verstappen at turn three! The Mercedes man does well to defend at corner three but then the Dutchman flies past him down the straight to corner four. Sainz is almost engulfed in the flames as it quickly takes hold of his car which then starts to roll back towards the track. He has 3.6 seconds to make up on Leclerc but he could just run out of time in this race to steal the win away. It's currently a Ferrari lockout at the front in P1 and P2. The Dutch driver may just run out of laps as Leclerc struggles with throttle problems. That won't be any consolation to Perez, though, who now drops down to third in the World Drivers' Championship standings following Leclerc's victory.
