Xiaomi 12S Ultra has a massive, Leica-branded rear camera (Mashable)

Xiaomi has launched its 12S series of smartphones. The star of the show is the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and its massive rear camera.

It also has a smaller, 4,600mAh battery, weighs a bit less at 204 grams, and has a 128GB storage option. On the front, you'll find a 6.73-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and a punch-hole, 32-megapixel selfie camera. The whole thing is equipped with Leica lenses and housed in an absolutely massive camera bump on the back, making even the one on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra pale in comparison.

On the other hand, Xiaomi has equipped the Xiaomi 12S Ultra with 48 MP telephoto and ultra-wide-angle cameras, plus a 32 MP front-facing camera. Unfortunately, Xiaomi has not announced the Xiaomi 12S Ultra globally. At launch, Xiaomi will sell the Xiaomi 12S Ultra in the following memory configurations: On the one hand, the device is the first to feature the Sony IMX989, a 50.3 MP sensor with a 23 mm equivalent focal length and a 1-inch sensor size. While the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is just over 1 mm shorter than its predecessor, it has a 0.8-inch smaller display at 6.73-inches. The 3,200 x 1,440-pixel resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate remain though, as does the LTPO 2.0 backplane. Xiaomi has finally announced the successor to the Mi 11 Ultra, albeit one without the smartphone's distinctive rear-facing display.

Xiaomi put a huge camera sensor in its new Mi 12S Ultra flagship ... (The Verge)

Xiaomi's new flagship smartphone the Mi 12S Ultra has a 1-inch image sensor on its main camera, among the biggest you can find in a smartphone.

In addition to the 12S Ultra, Xiaomi is also introducing two lower-end models: the 12S and 12S Pro. Those two phones have a main camera sensor with a 1/1.28-inch size, which is smaller than the Ultra but still bigger than the typical smartphone sensor. The phone is also supposed to be the first Android device capable of shooting in Dolby Vision HDR. The larger size allows the sensor to gather more light and capture more detailed images. It has IP68 water and dust resistance, a large 4,860 mAh battery, 67W wired fast charging, and a 120Hz refresh rate display. The 12S has a smaller 6.28-inch 120Hz display, while the 12S Pro has a 6.73-inch 120Hz OLED display, like the Ultra. Both get the same Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. Everything about Xiaomi’s new flagship smartphone, the Mi 12S Ultra, is big.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra Hands-On: Putting that 1-inch Leica camera to the ... (XDA Developers)

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra brings a brand new 1-inch camera sensor with Leica optics, plus a large beautiful display. We go hands-on with it!

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s main camera system consists of three cameras, headlined by a new 50MP Sony IMX989 camera with a 1-inch sensor with a Leica lens. There’s a lot more about the Xiaomi 12S Ultra I haven’t covered, including video recording, Leica portrait shooting modes, battery life (and whether the two proprietary chips help efficiency) as well as gaming and other general phone use. Keep in mind that I have not had enough time to really push the cameras yet, but these samples should give an early idea of how the Xiaomi 12S cameras fare. One concern I had with such a large sensor was that the camera would consistently blow out lights, which Samsung and Apple flagships are prone to do from time to time (and those sensors are small compared to the 12S Ultra’s). Whether it’s the Leica optical lenses or Xiaomi’s software algorithms, images keep a good balance. So we know the Xiaomi 12S Ultra at least has better thermals (but more importantly, a processor that does not heat as much). If we move to proper low light shots, like the below set at a park at night, we can see the superiority in Xiaomi’s shot: less noise, sharper details, and better illuminated all around. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra comes in three configurations: The Periscope zoom lens is still offering a 5X optical zoom range, but from early testing, it looks much improved over last year’s Mi 11 Ultra zoom lenses. This will be needed, because the 12S Ultra actually packs a smaller battery than last year’s Mi 11 Ultra, at 4,860 mAh. The reason is that I knew the Xiaomi 12 Pro wasn’t Xiaomi’s best offering, that there was going to be an Ultra device eventually that would be Xiaomi’s true alpha dog phone. I’ve only had about eleven hours with the phone at the time of writing this, so this is by no means a complete review. The Xiaomi 12 Pro that came out four months ago was a very good 2022 Android flagship that got a good reception on just about every tech site, including this one.

Powering the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Unfortunately, Xiaomi has confirmed that it's not going to be available outside China, where the phone is CNY 5,999 for the 8/256GB, CNY 6,499 for the 12/256GB, and CNY 6999 for the 12/512GB. Leica is bringing its imaging expertise to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra both in terms of the optics design, and the imaging software. On the video side, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the first Android phone to support Dolby Vision HDR recording. The auxilary camera parameters are similar to the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra with a pair of half-inch sensors for the focusing ultrawide and periscope zoom cameras. The other two cameras on the back of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra carry over the trusty 48MP Sony IMX586 1/2.0-inch sensor, used in the Mi 11 Ultra. The ultrawide is a 13mm f/2.2 with autofocus and macro abilities. It started with the Huawei P20 Pro's 40mm² sensor. It comes in Classic Black and Verdant Green with a Leather-like rear finish. The telephoto camera has a 120mm f/4.1 periscope. Additionally, there are Leica filters - Leica Vivid, Leica Natural, Leica BW Natural, and Leica BW High Contrast. The 50.3MP 23mm wide-angle camera pioneers Sony's flagship 1-inch IMX989 sensor. Xiaomi's new flagship Ultra is finally here.

The Xiaomi Band 7 Pro comes with a 1.64-inch rectangular display, making it look pretty much like an entry-level smartwatch. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and also features up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. There is a 50MP triple camera setup and a 13MP front camera, along with a 4500mAh battery and 67W fast charging. The highlight of the Xiaomi 12S series is the Leica partnership.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra sports a stunning camera, but you won't get to try it (The Indian Express)

Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the true successor to the earlier Mi 11 Ultra smartphone. A look at its features, specifications, and everything else to know about this ...

The front camera is 32MP on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The other 48MP camera is the ultra-wide one with a 128-degree field of view and a 7MP lens. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra sports a leather-like back, though it claims the material is more durable than traditional leather. Xiaomi’s latest flagship in India was the 12 Pro, introduced at a starting price of Rs 62,999. On the camera front, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra gets a 50MP+ 48MP+48MP combination. There’s still a chance that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra could come to other markets, but with a different name or number line. The most expensive version is the 12GB+512GB, which will cost CNY 6,999 or nearly Rs 82,000 plus on conversion. For now, all we know is that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is unlikely to be made available in India and other markets. The phone gets a massive camera module with Xiaomi using a new Sony IMX989 sensor, which is one inch in size. The main camera is the 50MP Sony IMX 989 sensor which is one inch in size and comes with optical image stabilisation (OIS). This comes with an 8P aspherical lens, which includes an IR light filter, and anti-glare lens coating as well. It comes with 1500 nits of peak brightness and has a 360-degree ambient light sensor as well. This was first reported by Android Central, and Xiaomi PR teams also confirmed to us that this would be the case.

Leica-Branded Xiaomi 12S Ultra Has World's Biggest Smartphone ... (PetaPixel)

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has the world's largest smartphone camera: a 50-megapixel 1-inch sensor behind a 13mm f/1.9 Leica lens.

Sony attempted something similar with its Xperia Pro-I earlier this year, but due to size constraints was unable to use the full size of the sensor like Xiaomi was able to here. Xiaomi says the 12S Ultra has also been designed to be more friendly to photographers in post production, and it captures photos in 10-bit RAW format calibrated by Adobe Labs with color correction metadata embedded directly into the files. At the core of the Xiaomi Surge Battery Management System, is a 4,860mAh single-cell silicon-oxygen anode battery and Xiaomi Surge P1 fast-charging chipset, which the company says also supports up to a 16A output current with 96.8% conversion efficiency. - The “Leica Authentic Look” pursues a natural imagery for which Leica is known. Additionally, it features Xiaomi’s image stabilization HyberOIS which the company says provides ultra-stable performance and continuous compensation for movement during video recording. The lens supposedly mitigates flare, ghosting, and chromatic aberration.

The real catch here for folks outside of China, though, is that Xiaomi has no plans to launch the phone globally. Lecia steps in to bolster the sensor with the 8P element lens and its coating. Of course, it’s not the first either, as we’ve seen 1-inch sensors in a few previous devices. Sony just announced the IMX989 last month, and it’s one of the biggest camera sensors for mobile devices ever produced. But each device is a bit different.

Disassembly video reveals the bonkers size of Xiaomi 12S Ultra's ... (GSMArena.com)

The module makes full use of the 1" sensor, unlike certain previous efforts. But it is a rather large and thick module.

You haven't even seen camera comparisons to make a statement about another camera being trash. Anyway, just the main camera module measures 11.06mm thick, which makes for one mighty camera bump. Around the 10 minute mark you can see the interior of the new VC. We should note that these optical formats are quite misleading, e.g. a 1” sensor doesn’t actually have a 1” diagonal. Check out this video by WekiHome that takes apart the Xiaomi 12S Ultra completely, it really shows how much bigger the main camera module is compared to a module built around the 1/1.3” ISOCELL GNV. How do you fit a 1” sensor inside a smartphone?
