Three Takeaways From British GP as Carlos Sainz Captures ... (Sports Illustrated)

Fans at Silverstone watched the Ferrari driver hold onto his victory as a three-way battle ensued behind him late in the incident-packed grand prix.

And there’s no doubt we had the pace to come back to P6 today.” After barrel-rolling over the barrier, Zhou was stuck between the metal fence and tire barriers, a narrow gap with nowhere to go. The rookie and Williams driver Alex Albon, who was involved in a separate wreck, were both sent to the medical care center. “I don’t want the focus to be pointed towards my disappointing race but more towards his incredible race win and obviously a first win in Formula 1 is always extremely special. Pierre Gasly was between Russell and Zhou, but as the gap started to disappear, the AlphaTauri driver pulled back. Sainz was brought in for softs, and Leclerc commented over the radio how it would be “hard” to chase cars on soft tires in the closing stages. Binotto felt that the team’s strategy calls were “the right and proper ones at each single time,” and the only possible miscue was Leclerc staying out. “I’ve always been a team player, I will always be a team player and especially in Ferrari, I know the team is in front of me and my personal interests. “I gave myself the best chance to stay ahead, by pushing as much as I could, but to a point that I was destroying so much my front tire that it made total sense for Charles to go through, and I let him by as soon as the team told me to do so,” Sainz said. “Then we were hoping for more tire degradation on the softs, to give Charles, yeah, maybe a difficult three or four laps initially but then recovering later on, but the soft didn’t degrade as we were hoping.” Leclerc, who was the race leader, remained out on his hard tires—the only driver to still have them on when the rest of the field emerged. “I needed to stay in the race like I was trying to and then all of a sudden the safety car gave me the opportunity to get back on it.

What the teams said – Race day at the 2022 British Grand Prix ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

The drivers and teams report back on all the action from Silverstone, for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix 2022...

The cars were fast, the guys did a good job, the pit-stops were good, so what we need to do now is a very good qualifying and a very good race and then we’re back in the game.” Luckily, I only damaged my front wing and was able to get back to the pits with the red flag and continue to race with the restart. "We lost a little bit of time in the pit stop, and then I was chasing, and chasing, and chasing, but the pace was great on both sets of tyres and then at the end there it was just a little bit difficult. I had a really great run on the second restart and could see the fans cheering for me in the stands, which was awesome to see. In addition, he experienced a DRS failure that required an additional pit-stop mid race and required him to run without the DRS in the second half of the race. Lewis on the other had a great start moving to 3rd so it was a shame that he was put back into fifth for the restart from where we dropped a further position. On the other hand, we can be pleased that we were fighting at the front after a very tough start to our season and a lot of hard work from everyone in Brackley and Brixworth to recover a huge performance gap. I asked the marshals to leave the car and next thing, when I got back, the car was on the back of the flatbed which meant I couldn’t restart. This year is going to be a pretty tough one to win but we just need to get our house in order to be properly on top of the car’s performance. It was unfortunate because I think it would have been a fantastic race for him today, but every point counts and he fought as hard for P7 as he would for the win. "The car was a handful to drive, I tried to find a good aero balance but it was difficult. “To get back to winning, especially at such a demanding track as Silverstone, is particularly pleasing and confirms that we have worked well this season, both at the track and back in Maranello. Carlos had a great weekend, in which he also secured his first pole position.

Edd Straw's 2022 F1 British Grand Prix driver ratings - The Race (The Race)

The 10th round of the 2022 Formula 1 season didn't disappoint - but which drivers impressed (and disappointed) Edd Straw the most?

He had to make the best of it but even with a change to fresh intermediates wasn’t a Q1 threat and ended up just over half-a-second off Magnussen. Took the restart eighth and was quickly shuffled back to 10th by Verstappen and Schumacher, admitting after the race that it would have been wise to pit for softs as planned. Got in two push laps after switching to a second set of inters in Q1 and was comfortably quicker than Schumacher, but it wasn’t enough for Q2. Unfortunately, he ran a little wide on his first push lap at Abbey and spun through the gravel, touching the barrier with the right rear. Didn’t make much progress in the race, opting to take both starts on mediums and then switching to hards but he struggled with understeer throughout. A straightforward but well-executed race for Alonso. He took possession of sixth place early on after reclaiming the spot Gasly took from him through Brooklands and Luffield on the restart lap. After a couple of mixed-bag qualifying sessions – in Montreal through no fault of his own – this was a return to form. Made little progress in the race, with any hope of points evaporating with his short stint on hards prior to making a second stop for softs. Verstappen’s problem handed him back the lead, but he didn’t quite have Leclerc’s pace and was eventually ordered to let him past. Time lost to a mistake at Turn 3 put him on the back foot early on his final lap, leaving him seventh. Russell felt he was at his most confident in Q1, but by the time he got to Q3, he was struggling more. That meant he was in the thick of it when the race restarted, battling his way past Hamilton and Leclerc – getting his elbows out along the way – to bag second place.

Track breached by 'Just Stop Oil' protesters at British Grand Prix (ESPN)

A group of protesters breached the track on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix and were on the circuit when cars came past.

These people were immediately removed and the matter is now being dealt with by the local authorities." "Thankfully we had plans in place for an eventuality such as this and the group were swiftly removed and arrested by our officers. It is incredibly disappointing that anyone would make the decision to do this. I just said big up the protestors. "We offered to facilitate a peaceful event at the circuit but they instead chose to put the lives of the drivers, marshals and volunteers at risk. Carlos Sainz wins thrilling British Grand Prix from Sergio Perez and ... (Eurosport.com)

Carlos Sainz secured his first victory in Formula One in a drama-filled British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

LAP 46/52 - INCREDIBLE RACING! - Unbelievable! Leclerc leaves the track going into Club, and Hamilton leapfrogs both him and Perez on the start/finish straight! Hamilton then goes wide into Village, and Perez and Leclerc both jump him down the Wellington straight! The Ferrari of Sainz makes an error going into the Hangar straight and goes off track and onto the grass! He gets past Leclerc and almost runs him off the track on the Wellington straight! Ferrari then opted to bring Sainz in to the pits for a set of hard tyres on lap 21, leaving Leclerc to try and increase the gap further to Hamilton behind him. Verstappen takes the lead of the race from Sainz, with Hamilton leapfrogging Leclerc into the first corner. The lack of grip on Leclerc's worn medium tyres then meant Hamilton also got past the Ferrari into Stowe corner to claim the third podium place. Perez, meanwhile, got past Hamilton and slotted into P3, after the Mercedes driver struggled to get his new soft tyres up to temperature. Four laps later, Leclerc pitted from the lead to try and offset a potential undercut by the Mercedes driver. Red Bull then informed their No. 1 driver that he also had aerodynamic damage to the rear of his car, effectively ruling him out of any chance of a podium finish. It then bounced up and over the barrier and into the safety fence. The Red Bull driver was forced into the pits early on for repairs, but Leclerc's Ferrari was deemed to have only minor damage, meaning he could continue.
