Defending Wimbledon champion found his best form to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 and progress to the last 16.
As in recent years, he arrived at Wimbledon without a match on grass after the French Open. Last year he lost his opening set of the tournament to Jack Draper and this year it was the second set of his opening match against Kwon Soon‑woo. Since then, he has responded with two extremely solid wins. With any other result, it would be hard not to consider this season one of the lowest points of his career. The decisive moment in the third set underlined the challenge he was up against. Kecmanovic was blown away in the first set and he could do little to halt Djokovic’s momentum. When Novak Djokovic was unable to compete at the Australian Open in January after his visa was cancelled, he was not the only player who saw the trajectory of his year immediately shift. Instead of the best player in the world, he faced a lucky loser, Salvatore Caruso. The Serb swore that he would do his best to “avenge” Djokovic.

Despite the scoreline, Kecmanovic remained persistent, and he was rewarded with his first break of the Djokovic serve to reduce the deficit late on. The win extends Djokovic’s lead in his ATP Head2Head series with Kecmanovic to 3-0. The Serbian’s relentlessness on return did eventually pay off with a break in the eighth game, however, and he clinched the set in style through a wonderful reflex lob on set point. Kecmanovic did his best to respond to the early Djokovic barrage. “I think I’ve been playing better and better as the tournament progresses," said Djokovic in his on-court interview. The Serbian cruised to a high-class 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 third-round win against countryman Miomir Kecmanovic at the grass-court major.
A month ago, Tim van Rijthoven was six years removed from his one and only ATP main draw match. On Sunday, he will play Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.
“Before the tournament started, it was a dream for me to play him,” van Rijthoven said. The 30-year-old Brit Heather Watson made her first Grand Slam fourth round in her 43rd career Grand Slam main draw. He is the first men’s wild card to make it this far at Wimbledon since Denis Kudla in 2015. In August 2016, he made his ATP Tour-level main draw debut, losing in the first round of a lower-level tournament. It probably helped that van Rijthoven is Dutch and the tournament was in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. He still managed to play a lot of tennis, though not many people saw it.
Did Novak Djokovic win today? The world No.3 continued his impressive start to Wimbledon 2022 by beating fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets.
Another error from Kecmanovic followed by a forehand winner from Djokovic gets him to 40-0. Kecmanovic bends a forehand on the run past Djokovic down the line and even the latter applauds that shot. Djokovic gets break point as Kecmanovic hits a forehand long again. Djokovic holds with a deft volley at the net which his opponent scrambles to but can't quite make it in time. Kecmanovic is 15-30 down as Djokovic gets successful with a challenge. He gets another game under his belt as Djokovic blasts a forehand return into the net. It feels like it's been a while since he hit one as good as that but Djokovic rattles a forehand winner down the line to get to 40-0. Djokovic miss-times his shot and a forehand goes high into the air before Kecmanovic rattles off an ace, 40-0. Djokovic slips mid-rally but that doesn't take anything away from the perfectly executed backhand volley across court from Kecmanovic to go 30-15 up. Djokovic gets two break points but can't return the first serve. He then fires a weak backhand into the net and Kecmanovic has break point. Djokovic hits two errors himself, 30-30, and then can't return a backhand from the back of the court.
Novak Djokovic produced another dominant performance to reach the Wimbledon fourth round after beating fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanović 6-0 6-3 6-4 on Friday.
Djokovic will face the Netherlands' Tim van Rijthoven in the fourth round. At one point, that set was evenly poised at 3-3, but Djokovic pulled away with a break of serve at 4-3. In the final set, Djokovic broke twice before Kecmanović hit back with a break of his own -- his first of the match.

“I think the Dutch people are very positive about what's happening right now. “I always felt like it was in my mind, so it was the head for me. Van Rijthoven also needed nine months to recover from golfer’s elbow. The Dutchman has spent years battling on the ATP Challenger Tour, where he owns a 47-53 record. “I go into every match thinking I can win the match. Not only did he claim the title at the ATP 250, but the Dutchman is now into the fourth round at Wimbledon, where he will play top seed Novak Djokovic.
Three-time defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic's next opponent is Tim van Rijthoven, who is making his Grand Slam debut thanks to a wild card.
“Yeah, I was just sort of waiting for it to happen,” Watson said. “I always expect the highest of myself.” “I’m just happy to be in the place I am right now,” he said. It is the first time she has reached the fourth round (same for Niemeier, whose only previous major showing was a first-round exit at this year’s French Open). “I’m sure he’s excited to play on a big stage. Djokovic is seeking a seventh career title at Wimbledon and 21st major championship overall. “Before the tournament started, it was a dream for me to play him, basically. He’s a young player that is just starting, so I’m sure his career will be very good.” “Also, against Djokovic, I’ll go into that match thinking I can win that match.” He can also stay in the rally and come to the net,” said Djokovic, who seemed to enjoy the sunny, breezy conditions in the afternoon, compiling a 36-13 edge in winners against his Serbian Davis Cup teammate. “It’s been a long one. We can guess what Hollywood might do with that script.

Maria, in the fourth round of a Slam for the first time, will face former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko for a place in the quarter-finals. “Before the tournament started, it was a dream for me to play Djokovic,” said Van Rijthoven, only the seventh man since 2000 to reach the round of 16 on his Grand Slam debut. “I started very well, very strong with a lot of intensity and focus,” added Djokovic, whose only blip was being broken when he served for the match at 5-2 in the third set. You always want to raise the level and things are shaping up well.” Djokovic has now won 22 successive matches on grass and is in the last 16 at Wimbledon for the 14th time.

Following his senior debut in 2016 though, the physical and mental challenges that go with a full-time tennis career took their toll. A contemporary of both Fritz and Medvedev, Van Rijthoven actually had quite a promising juniors career. I remember you from juniors, you have the talent so now you need to make more matches like this and more tournaments like this,” the Russian said. He is an all-court player with good court coverage and hits the ball cleanly. Van Rijthoven went on to defeat top seed and World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in a 6-4, 6-1 drubbing. Tim Van Rijthoven was not supposed to be at Wimbledon. Until three weeks ago, according to every conceivable metric used to judge elite-level tennis, the 25-year-old was nowhere near the sport’s oldest and grandest stage.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC would have normally been the first player to walk out on Centre Court as the defending champion.
That wasn't the only tradition Wimbledon appeared to relax this year with the reigning champions usually the first to step out onto Centre Court. "Quite surprising this year with couple of changes in the tradition that we know Wimbledon is very close to. The English major holds several traditions which set it apart from the other three Grand Slams with players required to wear all white among other rules.

A brick wall. Such was the description applied to Novak Djokovic by Thanasi Kokkinakis before their second-round encounter at Wimbledon 2022.
I tried to work him around the court by bringing a lot of variety in the game,” Novak Djokovic said. "I'm really blessed to be here," said Djokovic, after thanking the crowd for their support of him. But there were so many magnificent touches to the six-time champion's near-flawless performance that this particular brick wall made for a wonderful sight from every vantage point on center court except the far side of the net.

Djokovic makes an early challenge in the first game of the second set as he hits a first serve out. Kecmanovic keeps the game alive by winning the next point but Djokovic finishes it off with an ace. And the next game will be a big one for Kecmanovic as he looks to keep pace with the champion in this second set. He gets a big cheer as he draws level in the second set. Kecmanovic is in trouble here as he loses the first two points of his second service game in this third set. 'I thought I started well with a lot of intensity and focus and kept that up for most of the game. In the second set, with Djokovic leading 2-1 and the game tied 30-30 on Kecmanovic's serve – so pretty crucial – the pair shared a punishing 31 shot rally that ended in Kecmanovic's favour. You want to raise the level of tennis up a notch each match and that's what's happening.' Not in the least. Djokovic was too lost in the moment for pleasantries. To win the second set, Djokovic played a lob so perfect and bamboozling that Kecmanovic was heading towards his chair before it had even landed. His second service game, however, gave Kecmanovic three break points – including one at the end of a 17 shot rally – at which point the champion got serious. Passes, deliciously placed crosscourt forehands, drops, volleys, a barrage of winners that would have tested the best here – those that Djokovic must overcome in week two. Djokovic woke up, saved the three break points, then took the next five for good measure. Tennis has a busy Integrity Unit so we have to be careful with our words here but if this was a boxing match one might argue the superior fighter was being kind to his opponent, propping him up a little. From serving for the match 5-2 up, Djokovic now led 5-4. It was 2013, the last time Novak Djokovic lost on Centre Court, 35 matches ago now.

Tim van Rijthoven looks for a monumental upset against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon as play on the middle Sunday is on the agenda in London.
When picking a winner, it is frankly a coin flip for me but I was impressed with Sinner’s focus and level in his last match, so I will go with the Italian. Sinner in 5 The display he put in against Oscar Otte was just perfect – serve was firing, shotmaking was flawless and creative, and he managed to put constant pressure on the German’s serve. Paul in 5 Jakub: Paul is through to the second week of a slam for the first time in his career and he has done it without dropping a set. Alcaraz holds the 2-0 head-to-head advantage over the Italian, however, I do believe grass is the best surface for Sinner to be Alcaraz on. Paul in 5 I think the path to victory for the American is connecting on a high percentage of first serves, something I think he is very capable of. Norrie is also finally getting his slam moment and it is particularly special for him at Wimbledon. The Brit bounced back from his five-set battle with Jaume Munar by dropping just five games against Steve Johnson. The two have split in their previous meetings, Paul winning the first two and Norrie the second two. Goffin in 5 Shane: After defeating qualifiers in rounds one and two, Frances Tiafoe proved his mettle in Round 3 against a tricky Alexander Bublik. Tiafoe’s best tennis seems to be brought out during Slams and this week is no different. Tim van Rijthoven has the potential to do a lot of damage to the Serbian is his serve’s clicking and he can disrupt rhythm effectively with his slice. Jakub Bobro: Djokovic, looking for his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title, has gone into next gear in the last two matches, dropping just 14 games against Thanasi Kokkinakis and Miomir Kecmanovic. Van Rijthoven will be a more challenging opponent, now on an eight-match winning streak.

Italian won 6-1, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3 to stun his teenage opponent in a match between the two youngest players left in the men's draw.
Alcaraz saved five match points on his own serve at 2-5, but could do nothing about the sixth, as Sinner thrashed a final winner. A Sinner forehand went long – and they went to a fourth set. A rocket of a return that painted the baseline earned Sinner a break at the start of the second, but Alcaraz finally found some rhythm. Just as Alcaraz looked to be getting on top, Sinner broke for 3-1 and held nervously from 0-40 for 4-1. His first ace of nine on Sunday was his 43rd for the tournament and he has been banging them down at up to 135mph. While both were as green as the grass – six matches on the surface for Alcaraz, eight for Sinner – the Spaniard’s bigger game looked suited to it.
CARLOS ALCARAZ lost to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon fourth round.
It was saved with a 127mph serve from the 19-year-old but Sinner successfully challenged a ball to deny Alcaraz a game point. Alcaraz saved both but - just like in the third set tiebreak - Sinner wowed the crowd with a cross-court forehand winner and set up his fifth match point. An error from the fifth seed's racket gave the Italian a match point but he dumped the ball in the net again. There were no minibreaks as the young stars changed ends at 3-3 but it was Sinner who was first to crack as he served from the other end, failing to get the ball over the net to gift Alcaraz a 4-3 lead and he held twice to set up three set points. And Alcaraz found himself facing three break points immediately at the start of the third but rallied to hold for 1-0, hitting three winners en route in what looked to be something of a turning point for the Spaniard who started to look more like his usual self. But it was Sinner who got off to a stronger start, breaking the fifth seed for a 3-1 lead in the opener.

"I lost the rhythm on my serve a little bit towards the end of the match, but overall just a good fight and really challenging match for me on grass." "He's maturing a lot on the big stage. Attacking the Dutchman's backhand corner, Djokovic secured an instant break in the fourth set to quell any thoughts of a turnaround. He made just two unforced errors in the third set as he found his groove on return, eliminating the free points that served to boost van Rijthoven's confidence in the early stages. I got into his service rhythm, started reading his serve better in the third and fourth sets." He ended the perfect 8-0 grass season of Dutch wild card Tim van Rijthoven with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory on Centre Court to bring the Dutchman's dream Grand Slam debut to a close.

#Wimbledon This #Djokovic level in the 3rd set against Van Rijthoven is breathtaking and scary at the same time. They've faced off at an ATP Tour event just once, with Djokovic claiming a straight-set victory in the 2021 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. The only source of drama was whether Djokovic would have the win wrapped up before the 11 p.m. curfew. Instead, he was brutally efficient against Van Rijthoven in the third to reassert control. Djokovic after losing the 2nd set #Wimbledon pic.twitter.com/A0aWVtic6L He then earned a critical break later in the set to jump ahead 4-3. Van Rijthoven displayed impressive resilience to level the match. Damn, Van Rijthoven is good...maybe not beat-Djokovic-good...but really good...And what a pity the guy gets zero ranking points - ie. Djokovic had little time for Van Rijthoven's Cinderella story in the first set. he'll still have to qualify for events - after this. Van Rijthoven upset No. 15 Reilly Opelka in the second round and took down No. 22 Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets in the third round.

Novak Djokovic came through a stern examination, as he beat Tim van Rijthoven to book his place in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
A second break followed in the seventh game, and victory was secured one game later. Everything was returned, and most of it with interest as he wrapped it up in 30 minutes. Van Rijthoven backed up the break and two games later served out the set, but did it the hard way. In Van Rijthoven, he came up against a rising talent with a big serve and an array of shots. Van Rijthoven was highly touted as a junior before his career was derailed by a series of injuries. “I have never faced him before,” Djokovic said.
