Portland signs Gary Payton II away from Warriors (Golden State of Mind)

Payton had signed with the team at the end of the 2020-21, but the Warriors risked any of the other teams signing GPII in order to sign him to a new deal that ...

Even though GPII is a core piece, and 34-year-old Steph Curry is still in his prime, and we heard for weeks about how profitable the Warriors’ title run was for ownership, we now know there is a cap on what Lacob and Guber will spend. Gary Payton II simply played winning basketball all season long, and that was never as apparent as in Game 5 against the Nuggets, when GPII made play after play in the 4th quarter to close out the series. In the clinching game of the Finals, Payton was a team-high +18 in his 20 minutes, and was on the floor until the literal last minute of the game. But this is the first time in memory that the Warriors outright cheaped out on an important player while trying to win championships. And even though he was only 6’3”, Payton was going to jam on other players a lot. With Kevon Looney also unsigned, and their need to re-sign or replace Otto Porter Jr., the deal was too onerous for the Dubs, and thus they lost one of the NBA’s best perimeter defenders.

Warriors inexplicably lose Gary Payton II in free agency (SFGate)

The Golden State Warriors have lost key role player Gary Payton II to the Portland Trail Blazers — despite the fact that the team could have paid Payton ...

Unlike the situation with Payton, the Warriors did not have Porter's early Bird rights, meaning their options for retaining Porter were more limited. Payton — an elite, versatile defender who also has offensive upside — is undoubtedly a player the Warriors would want to keep. Yes, paying Payton would have resulted in an additional luxury tax penalty, but the Warriors are bringing in so much revenue these days they may soon surpass the New York Knicks as the NBA's most valuable franchise.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – JUNE 13: Golden State Warriors' Gary Payton II (0) is all smiles as they defeat the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals ...

His reinsertion into the lineup in the NBA Finals was critical in the Warriors winning their fourth championship in eight years. But Payton II is one of those players. It’s Morant’s explosive first step that sent Wiggins spinning — few players have that kind of burst off the line. The Dubs just made repeating harder on themselves. The second most important thing is perimeter defense. So little was expected from him, but so much was given.

The Blazers also extended Anfernee Simons on the first day free agents could negotiate with teams.

Or, a trade could be on the horizon. Nurkic had one of his best seasons with the Blazers before plantar fasciitis shut him down after the All-Star break. The Blazers also have the 6-5 Josh Hart on the roster. What the Blazers don’t have are very many proven players over 6-6. He then appeared in 18 regular-season games over two seasons with Milwaukee (2016-2018) before playing 11 games with the Los Angeles Lakers (2017-18) and then 32 over two seasons with Washington (2018-2020). Two seasons ago he caught on with Golden State and saw action in 10 games. Payton II, who also played at Oregon State, averaged 7.1 points in 17.6 minutes per game for the Warriors during their run to the NBA title.

Report: Blazers, Gary Payton II agree to three-year deal (Yardbarker)

Gary Payton II agreed to a three-year, $28 million deal with the Portland Trail Blazers late Thursday, according to reports. Payton II averaged 7.1 points, ...

The defensive lineman found himself in and out of the starting lineup through his first two seasons in the NFL, but he firmly established himself as a starting defensive tackle in 2021. It can be used to sign players for up to two years, with a 5% raise for the second season. The BAE can be used to sign players for up to two years, with a 5% raise after year one. With the tax advantages, linemates and opportunity to win again that Palat and Paul have, I think they will recognize how good they have it and stay in Tampa for reasonably discounted prices that fit the Bolts’ cap structure. I grew up in a golden age of dynasties — teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, and more recently, the New England Patriots and Golden State Warriors. There is something special about a team that dominates, that expects to play for the championship every year, and that all other teams have to dethrone. Apart from admiring their will and courage, it also occurred to me that maybe the Lightning deserved to win a Cup that wasn’t imprinted with the stain of the pandemic. It’s not that there is any asterisk attached to the Lightning’s Cup wins — in fact, it may have been harder to win those Cups than in a normal year, but it just seems that some of the shine on their accomplishments was diminished by the odd circumstances. The Lightning’s first Cup was won in an empty arena in Edmonton during the bubble tournament, and their second was played against an Eastern Division foe that emerged from a pandemic-driven Canadian division which permitted only a smattering of fans to be in attendance during Tampa’s road games. Boughner was hired in December 2019 after the Sharks let go of Pete DeBoer following a 5-16-2 start to the season. Payton II evolved from defensive specialist to a critical role player in the second half of the season. What made it all the more stunning was the reveal that the two schools were the ones who initiated the move, not the Big Ten. With UCLA and USC, the Big tEn is now on the verge of a billion-dollar TV deal Well, while competition level certainly played a factor in those storied sports programs' decision to leave the PAC-12, in the end, huge sums of cold hard cash were a major influence on the move. He ranks first in first five inning ERA, which makes the Dodgers a near auto-bet in the first five when he gets the start.

Grading Gary Payton II's 3-year, $28 million deal with Blazers to ... (ClutchPoints)

Time to grade the Blazers' three-year, $28 million contract to pry Gary Payton II away from the warriors in NBA free agency.

Payton can handle the defensive assignments that Lillard, never particularly a plus defender, has had to take on throughout his career. It’s definitely a bit of a gamble by the Blazers. However, Payton is exactly the kind of key role player that Portland needed in NBA free agency. Free agent Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II opted to sign with the Portland Trail Blazers in NBA free agency, agreeing to a three-year, $28 million deal.

Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole and a still-recovering Klay Thompson can carry the offensive load, but Payton became their most reliable defender among guards. Payton's Warriors breakout came after six seasons of trying and failing to latch onto an NBA rotation.

Report: Gary Payton II leaving Warriors to sign 3-year deal with ... (CBS News)

The Portland Trail Blazers are reportedly signing former Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II to a three-year, $28 million deal.

He helped lead Golden State to a championship, and now, he'll take his talents to the Pacific Northwest. The fit, on paper, is quite good. After spending the bulk of his career on 10-day contracts and in the G-League, he finally managed to carve out a steady role for himself with the Warriors as a defensive stopper and unconventional pick-and-roll threat.

Major problems loom for Warriors roster after losing Gary Payton II ... (Sporting News)

The Warriors have had a quiet free agency period. What is available for them to do?

Probably the best for the Warriors to add talent is through the trade market. They have a lot to offer for quality veteran help, and they won't be able to find the same caliber of player through minimum signings on the free agency market. But the Warriors probably wouldn't be interested. Finding a player on the minimum to replace those minutes would have saved the Warriors tens of millions of dollars, but it would almost surely have been a downgrade in talent. The Warriors can bring back their own free agents like Kevon Looney and Damion Lee if they want to dip into the luxury tax. The Warriors also drafted Patrick Baldwin Jr. in the first round.

He was successful in matchups against some of the league's best big men, such as MVP Nikola Jokic, and the fact that he added a little more shooting to his offensive arsenal (35.8% from 3 on 1.7 attempts per game) made him a more well-rounded player. Payton, who spent the past two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, is expected to join the Blazers on a three-year, $28 million deal, sources told ESPN's Marc J. Spears. The Warriors offered Payton the taxpayer mid-level exception, sources told Spears. Gary Payton II is finalizing a multi-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, his agent, Aaron Goodwin, confirmed to ESPN.

The expectation already was that Moody would take a leap and see his role expand in Year 2. Moody was praised all season long for his poise, maturity, work ethic and being able to stay ready as a rookie. His impact was seen more than ever when the Warriors almost pulled off a wild 29-point comeback against the Mavs in Game 4 with the backups and role plays taking over. Not everything is seen in the box score, but watching the way he would put a hand in the face of Mavs star Luka Doncic shows how much the little things already matter to him. Where he really stood out was the other side of the ball. Instead of watching Payton guard Portland stars like Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons up and down the court, now the Warriors will have to face the feisty guard three times a season.

2 reasons Gary Payton II is a huge loss for the Warriors (ClutchPoints)

Gary Payton II has agreed to a deal with the Trail Blazers. Here's why he's poised to be a major loss for the Warriors.

Payton took that evolution to new heights in 2021-22, making his palpable impact felt all over the floor as an undersized wing who readily toggled between playing like a center and point guard. Payton also hit a sterling 59% of his tries from floater range, supplementing powerful forays to the rim with soft touch just outside the basket. Don’t be surprised if he fails to live up that status with the Blazers. Both Curry and Green are one of one, offensive and defensive engines that drive sustained team-wide success. But a truly life-changing season wasn’t the byproduct of some rippling major skill improvement or significant change in his overall approach. Iguodala’s playing days may be over, while Green and Thompson are already on the wrong side of 30. Klay Thompson suddenly morphed back into a stopper during the latter half of the NBA Finals. Moody had his number called as a defensive sub against the Dallas Mavericks, and Kuminga boasts the physical chops to some day check four positions at a borderline elite level.

Gary Payton II sent segments of Dub Nation into a frenzy with an IG story on Friday but he later clarified it wasn't a shot at the Warriors.

That shouldn't diminish the love that goes both ways. Payton became so valuable to the Warriors for his defense and energy on offense that he was an integral part of their rotation throughout the season. The Warriors, though, brought him back as the 15th man on the roster, signing him for just over $1.9 million.
