They however were ordering ships to remain away from the area of the accident. Health officials reported that the hospitals in Aqaba were all full and that they were using emergency field hospitals. Civil Defense officials cordoned off areas of the port while broadcasting warnings to residents to remain indoors and close their windows as a precaution. Some reports suggest that one of the main wires on the crane broke causing the release of the tank. The truck drives away and another is preparing to come alongside when the tank suspended by the crane over the ship suddenly drops to the deck below. The toxic gas is pressurized and cooled for shipment and when the tank is punctured a cloud envelops the local area.

A tank was dropped by a crane at the port of Aqaba, sending plumes of toxic yellow gas into the air.

The closest residential area is about 15 miles away, and Nidal Majali, the local commissioner for tourism and environment, told state media the effects of the gas leak were limited and there was no risk to public health. Chlorine was used during World War I as a choking agent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Chlorine is widely used in household products such as bleach, for waste sanitation, and in drinking water and pool water to kill harmful bacteria.
