The cat-and-mouse story between Nam Han-joon and Han Jae-hee is the most exciting part of the series, and it remains to be seen whether it lives up to the promise. Most Pilot-y Line: In the first few scenes, Nam Han-joon’s abilities shown to audiences via an interview panel for managerial position at a high-end hotel. At a few points in the show, characters are shown to have supernatural strength — running fast and scaling buildings. Our Take: While the premise of the show seems fun and entertaining, it is unfortunately a little bit undercooked. The main issue is that Nam Han-joon feels like an extremely self-obsessed person, and the characterization comes off more like a caricature than anything else. As he’s investigating a hit-and-run case involving one of his client’s husbands, he is introduced to Detective Han Jae-hee (Oh Yeon-seo), forming a slight crush on her while she investigates him, setting up a cat-and-mouse game for the series.

Oh Yeon-seo and Seo In-guk star in 'Cafe Minamdang.'

Jeong Man-sik is hilarious as Jae-hui’s second in command, a detective who prefers easy cases and looking the other way. Seo, who is equally good in serious and comic roles, seems very comfortable playing Jun-hun as a laughable but lovable scam artist. Cafe Minamdang is a very physical comedy with every character enthusiastically getting into the spirit, whether it’s a fight against the odds or a hilarious seance.

Later on, Han-joon’s group find out about the team that has taken the hit-and-run case, but find themselves interrupted by the appearance of someone dubbed “Looney.” And, while they search for her, we see that it’s in fact Jae-hui, who has been rummaging through the shaman’s belongings in the hopes of finding something suspicious. When the two meet, it’s clear that suspicions are aroused, as the famous detective seems curious as to how a shaman could have known about the case in so much detail. In time, the group head out to find the dead body, realising it is in a memorial park, and acknowledging their need to discover it before Gyeong-ho’s secretary can after some astute deduction. And, despite Du-jin’s grievances over the employment of such a person, he’s told to stick it out by his boss, observe Jae-hui, and get rid of her when the timing is right so they can climb the employment ladder together. It does bear fruits for the client too, of course, as the man is able to catch his fleeing ex-wife, but we’re left to presume that any work Han-joon does incurs a hefty cost. But such a fancy way of living is not shared by sibling Nam Hye-jun, the NIS worker he lives with, even if the shaman’s workers appear to adore what they do, and the enamored fans waiting outside buy into this idea of luxury.

After convincing the rookie detective to stick around despite his costly error, the detectives soon find themselves annoyed by a taunting, pseudo-comforting Han-joon, claiming that he is declaring war on them. Later on, we see that Jae-hui has only been transferred due to her new team’s imminent disbandment, but Du-jin becomes a surprising figure of support when he points out that if Gyeong-ho isn’t arrested, the force will be viewed as a complete joke. Outside, Han-joon does chastise his client, warning the rich VP one last time that he won’t be able to help him in any future incidents, and he will instead turn to aiding his victims. However, their conversation is being watched by Hye-Jun, who waits until the rookie cop is left alone to enact their group’s plan of giving dashcam footage over as part of a grander scheme. As the investigation continues, and Gyeong-ho himself throws a strop over the loss of his sports car, Han-joon pays the criminal a visit, claiming that he is here to help the “rich idiot.” It’s not exactly a welcomed drop-in, but the fraudulent shaman proves his worth when recalling the man’s past during one of his rituals. Convinced, Gyeong-ho begs for the shaman’s services, in exchange for the agreement that he won’t even make it to court.
