In a recent Stubstack piece, Marc Stein reported that the Grizzlies have even had conversations with the Sacramento Kings about the 4th overall pick in the Draft. 2022 NBA Draft: Debating case for Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero ... (CBSSports.com)

Our experts make the case in a spirited roundtable for their choice for the No. 1 NBA Draft prospect.

What most clearly separates Smith from Banchero, Holmgren and others as the best pick at No. 1 in the 2022 NBA Draft is his elite outside shooting. Given that Smith also boasts excellent defensive upside and a blossoming shot-creation portfolio offensively, he is the safest bet of the group to one day be an NBA All-Star. With promising young guards like Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony distributing the basketball in Orlando, Smith would make an excellent addition to the Magic's core group. The hesitation with him at No. 1 stems from the fact that he's not as potentially damaging of a 3-point shooter as Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren and even Jaden Ivey are. He's already proven that he can perform at the highest levels of amateur basketball, and he also has the most room to improve of any of the top three prospects. In four to five years, we could legitimately be talking about him being one of the faces of the League with his ability to dribble, pass and shoot unlike any we have seen at his size and length along with the fact that he is an elite defender and rim protector. No one is as ready to play in the NBA tomorrow like Banchero, though, and I think that he'll ultimately prove to be a multiple-time All-Star by the end of his second contract. I understand the allure of Smith and Banchero, but to me Holmgren's upside is a notch above. Here's who each of us had in the top spot, and why, as we barrel towards Thursday night's draft with a wide range of views about the top of the class. But on top of all of that, I'm just a big believer in his mentality and that inner-toughness. I understand the arguments for Jabari Smith, Paolo Banchero and even Jaden Ivey to go first overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. I don't think any of them are ridiculous options. But I still genuinely believe Holmgren is the best prospect available this year, and that's why I also believe Orlando should take him with the No. 1 pick. We'll find out on Thursday night who the Orlando Magic value as the No. 1 pick as they select first overall for the first time since 2004 -- but there's far from a consensus view at the top of this draft among NBA front offices.

The 2022 NBA Draft, According to YODA (Bullets Forever)

Inspired by the Washington Wizards record of draft day futility, about a decade ago I wondered whether I could build a stat-based prospect evaluation tool ...

- Jalen Williams, W, Santa Clara — After evaluating his numbers, I watched some video and thought he might be a bit underrated. - AJ Griffin, W, Duke — Good shooter who’s a solid athlete. - David Roddy, W, Colorado State — A wide body with superior agility, Roddy is slated as a second round pick in most mock drafts. - Paolo Banchero, F, Duke — BIG forward who may end up playing center in the NBA...if he can learn to be a rim protector on defense. The injury and the load weren’t enough to prevent him from grabbing 9.6 rebounds per 40 minutes. - Keegan Murray, F, Iowa — Most mock drafts have Murray lower, and I spent a fair amount of time trying (and failing) to see why. By the numbers, he’s a good mix of size, athleticism, skill and motor. - Centers — Big guys who figure to play inside. The brightest of the warning flags is his 43.5% shooting on twos, which suggests some difficulty getting to and finishing at-rim. Holmgren will likely start his career at forward and shift to the middle as his body matures and he gets stronger. His length and athleticism figure to make him a defensive asset as his career progresses — he averaged 5.5 blocks per 40 minutes in the NCAA last season. In the case of prospects who don’t get measured or timed, I’ll sometimes review game footage to see if I can discern size and athletic tools by comparing them to prospects with measurements/times.

It’s very possible we look back on this draft in five years, even more than in other drafts, and wonder how in the world it ended up going in the order that it did. The commonality? GO FURTHER Four second-round playoff exits and a barren asset cupboard later, that level of excitement isn’t quite the same anymore. NBA Draft week is not like it used to be in Philly. A season’s worth of losses would culminate with a lottery pick or two that allowed fans to dream of better days. GO FURTHER How should the Bulls operate in this year’s draft? Last year’s first-round pick went to Orlando in the Nikola Vučević trade, but the Bulls plucked Ayo Dosunmu as a second-round steal at No. 38. With the 18th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls select...

His sources are not known to the Bulls and he has no special access to information beyond the access and privileges that go along with being an NBA accredited member of the media. He can handle the ball and score, and that’s a lot of it. If they were to retain the pick, he’d fit as a potentially top defender and someone who can run the court with Trae Young. He’s regarded as one of the best all around defenders who could move Lauri Markkanen to sixth man, where he probably fits best and be a secondary ballhandler in transition for a developing young team. He’s falling into the second round among most projections after a horrendous season with plenty of explanations, like injury and his dad being fired, who was his coach and why he went there. They have the size up front and can use the defense outside. None of those G-league guys seem like they can shoot, but they’re athletic guys, some of whom seem like they’ll be able to defend and definitely run the court. Maybe the Rockets will draft him and let him stay home with Wall. The Spurs have been taking high ceiling risks in the draft, and he’s supposedly a talent. It’s a relief that the Kings are about to again be the Kings. We need something to count on in the NBA. Hey, we just drafted a guard in Davion Mitchell, so we can’t take him. The guys who to me stand out the most are 6-4 Jaden Ivey of Purdue and 6-11 Jalen Duren of Memphis. He looks like a guy who will walk into the NBA and score immediately. But it is unrealistic that all these teams can basically come up with virtually the identical order with a player or two moved up or down.

2022 NBA Draft: The Best Fits For Top 10 Teams (Forbes)

That said, how could the draft shake out, if teams picking in the Top 10 were to pick after need? The selections. Pick 1 - Orlando Magic - Keegan Murray, Iowa.

The spacing alone, which he will provide, is worth gold for a team trying to attack off dribble-drives. Liddell is a thinker, which works well in San Antonio, making him a snug fit on the roster. Smith is a knock-down three-point shooter (42% from range) with defensive upside and some shot-creation ability. For now, he's an NBA ready defender, who can play multiple positions, and rebound at a high level (6.6 per game). The seven-footer is also adept at putting the ball on the floor, allowing players around him to play off of his actions. For Lillard, this provides him with a multipurpose big man, who can also occasionally play alongside Jusuf Nurkic, assuming the Blazers keep him around. Enter Daniels, who is a near 6'8 guard, with great defensive instincts, and an evolving offensive game. Not only is he an athletic tornado, he's also one of the most productive players in the entire draft, averaging 16.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 1.1 blocks and 5.7 free throw attempts per game in just 24.4 minutes. Banchero also functions as a secondary playmaker, and one who can consistently create his own offense when that's called for. He also got to the line 5.4 times per game, basically never turned the ball over (5.7 TOV%), and displayed great maturity and patience on the court. The 21-year-old can effectively guard three positions, and even swing down to handle guards when needed to. As per usual, the vast majority of teams picking in the draft aren't going to focus on positions or needs, when they make their selection.

2022 NBA Draft scouting report: Ousmane Dieng (Peachtree Hoops)

Our 2022 NBA Draft scouting report series continues with a dive on Ousmane Dieng, a wing prospect who spent time in the NBL this past season.

He will be better served going to a franchise who will give him the time and space to figure out and expand his game. Obviously, he has a lot to figure out, but he is well equipped to solve those challenges with the right franchise. Currently, he has not shown the ability to finish through contact, and relies a lot on floaters and runners to score around the rim. Defensively, he does well on rotations, because that allows him to move freely, but straight-up in the post, he does get bullied and won’t be able to stop a determined NBA finisher from scoring at the rim. His offensive feel and awareness jumps out on the tape, and he has a little flashiness in his game that is quite easy on the eyes. Right now, at 19 years old, Ousmane Dieng is going to get pushed around in the NBA. That said, his frame and build suggests that he should be able to gain size and weight as he matures.

The 2022 NBA Draft is here. After the long NBA season has come to a close, the first tentpole event of the offseason is upon us with the NBA Draft taking ...

The fit: The Warriors proved the dynasty is alive and well but there were some glaring areas for improvement. His size and length are intriguing at 6-foot-7 with a 7-foot-1 wingspan, giving the Rockets a developmental piece for their rebuild. The fit: The 76ers were severely lacking playmaking and scoring off the bench behind James Harden and Tyrese Maxey. Chandler could fill both of those holes as a lightning-quick guard who is aggressive as a scorer and decisive as a playmaker. Beauchamp would give Memphis more size, length and athleticism on the wing as a forward who could make a killing running alongside Ja Morant. He can fill a lane and score in transition and does a lot of damage as an active cutter. His offensive versatility to play any position from point guard to power forward makes him an intriguing fit for the Spurs, giving them a unique player to add to a young core of Murray, Johnson and in this scenario, Duren. The fit: The Bulls' biggest weakness was their frontcourt and Liddell is a two-way forward who could help address that area of need. He doesn't fit Atlanta's win-now timeline, but he's an intriguing development project with a ton of potential to brighten the team's future around Trae Young. The 6-foot-9 forward is a creative scorer and shot creator with quality ball-handling for his size. Agbaji would be a great running mate for a playmaker of Ball's caliber as a fast and athletic forward who can run the lane, score off cuts and space the floor as a perimeter shooter. Davis will give Washington a primary defender for wing assignments and his attitude and work ethic would be invaluable to the organization. The fit: The Trail Blazers need help on the defensive end and Daniels is one of the best and most versatile defenders in this draft class. The latest news: Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes reported the Trail Blazers are "in pursuit" of Raptors forward OG Anunoby and the No. 7 pick is "in play." The Purdue sophomore could pair with Fox to make one of the fastest backcourts in the NBA and they'd both play nicely off of a skilled and cerebral big man like Domantas Sabonis. Passing on the best player available because of the presence of Mitchell and Fox would be a mistake.

NBA Mock Draft 2022: Who should the Magic select with No. 1 ... (Sporting News)

The Magic are picking first in the NBA Draft for the fourth time in their history. They've had a good record so far selecting impact players.

Pairing Smith with the young core the Magic already have in place seems like a match made in heaven. If you told any fan of a team that drafts Banchero that he'll someday average 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game while also shooting over 40% from the 3-point line, they'd take it in a heartbeat. How often could you make the argument that a 6-foot-10 forward may have the best jumper in their draft class? Each of their three previous No. 1 selections ended up having an immediate impact on the fortunes of their franchise. If Banchero is the pick for the Magic, they'd be getting the best player in the draft according to Irving. At 6-foot-10 and 250 pounds, Duren is the most physical player in this year's draft class with some comparing him to a young Dwight Howard. Holmgren's matchup against Duren was the chance to prove he could hang with someone much stronger and more physical. TSN's Irving had this to say about the most intriguing player in the draft: Smith has all the tools to be an elite scorer in the NBA. He possesses the size and length to get his silky smooth jumper off and has shown the ability to lock in defensively for stretches. Then, lightning hit twice when they received the No. 1 overall pick in 1993 and selected Chris Webber, trading him straight away to Golden State for Anfernee Hardaway and picks. According to Vegas Insider, Smith is the favorite to be taken No. 1 overall by the Magic. Despite finishing last in the Eastern Conference this season, there is a sense that the Magic are building something tangible, and their young core could do with a boost on the defensive end of the court. The Orlando Magic are picking first in the NBA Draft for the fourth time in their history.

The Magic were widely expected to choose Jabari Smith in the days leading up to the draft.

The modern NBA is incredibly demanding of big men defensively, and while Banchero has the athletic tools to survive on that end of the floor, it hasn't yet translated into steady performance. If Banchero is going to lead the Magic into contention in the coming years, that is going to have to change. In the end, Orlando went with a prospect considered to be the best offensive player in this draft class. That expectation persisted into draft day and only really began to change in the final minutes before the Magic went on the clock. He should be able to join the Magic right away and help give them one of the best offensive cores in basketball.

NBA Draft 2022: Orlando Magic make Duke's Paolo Banchero the ... (USA TODAY)

Magic tab the 6-foot-10 Paolo Banchero, who averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals for Coach K's final Duke team.

The Magic love their size and versatility, and Banchero adds to that. He averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals and shot 47.8% from the field and 33.8% on 3-pointers in his only season at Duke. Banchero’s versatility allows him to operate as the main ball-handler or facilitator. It was Orlando’s fifth lottery pick in the past six drafts and its first No. 1 pick since selecting Dwight Howard in 2004. Banchero, 19, is the fifth Duke player to go No. 1 overall and second in the past four drafts and is the 13th consecutive freshman selected with the first pick. Banchero, 6-10 and 250 pounds, might be the most NBA-ready players of the potential No. 1 picks because of his size, strength, poise and skillset that he applies to both ends of the court. NBA draft 2022: Orlando Magic pick Paolo Banchero No 1 overall ... (The Guardian)

Live updates: The best basketball prospects in the world have gathered in Brooklyn. Join Hunter Felt for the latest picks and news.

The 2022 NBA Draft is set to begin at 8:00 pm EST at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center but we’ll be back well before then to catch you up on all the league happenings. Still, expect him to go in the Top 3 alongside Duke’s Paolo Banchero and Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr, both of whom seem to be safer bets. The conflict in this year’s draft seems to be potential upside vs. The Thunder go with Holmgren, who is the most talented player in the draft—the kind of prospect that they created the term “unicorn” to describe—so why wasn’t he the consensus number one? If he goes, he’ll be in the second round and that might not even be guaranteed. Chet Holmgren’s Ceiling: With his ability at both ends of the floor, Chet Holmgren is arguably the most prized talent in this year’s draft. He’s a two-way player, the rare player with a killer jump shot who is willing to play tenacious defense on the other side of the court Maybe the safest pick in the Likely Top Five. I’m sure his college track record and famous name will mean that someone will give him a shot, he might have to go through the G League. Smith is a much safer choice than Holmgren, that’s for sure, and maybe the safest pick in the Top 5. The Houston Rockets are up next and this is a no-brainer if there ever was one. As always, the tradition is for the New York fans who have scored seats for the NBA draft to boo their selection. The mostly highly regarded foreign player in the draft.

May all the green room invitees at the 2022 NBA Draft have as colorful of careers as they do draft-day getups.

LSU wing Tari Eason had a green suit with ice that played off the Atari logo, Arizona’s Bennedict Mathurin had a red-patterned look and Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan brought it with a pinkish-purple suit-pant combo. Another potential top-three pick, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, brought some Travis Barker vibes with the all-black color scheme, including a very fluffy jacket and dice chain. Let’s start with likely top-three pick Paolo Banchero out of Duke, who wore the most purple of suits — apparently because the Seattle product felt guilty about not attending the University of Washington.

Lakers make a move as trade chaos tipped for 'wild' draft after No.1 confusion — LIVE.

“Listen, trades are the new free agency this time of year. He’s obviously not Kevin Durant. But he has that skill, a similar skill set.” The Ringer’s Chris Vernon predicted on the latest episode of ‘The Mismatch’ podcast that this is going to be a ‘wild’ draft. You’re seeing fewer and fewer impact players going into free agency. That is expected to only be the first of plenty of trades on a chaotic draft day. Other talent in the top echelon of the draft on Thursday includes Duke University’s Paolo Banchero, tipped to be taken by the Houston Rockets with the third pick.

NBA Draft 2022: Biggest team needs, best potential prospect fits for ... (CBSSports.com)

The Class of '22 should provide ample opportunity for teams to fill in roster gaps with quality players.

San Antonio currently has three first-round picks, but that could obviously change as the draft nears. The Pelicans have quite a core with Brandon Ingram, CJ McCollum and the potential return of Zion Williamson, so they need to keep surrounding them with shooting and defense. They'll also be able to find a potential diamond in the rough at No. 17 if they decide to keep the pick. They have obvious needs on the wing, and could also use a power forward to either start along Karl-Anthony Towns or come off the bench. Depending on the status of James Wiseman, they could also look for another athletic big, since that is a clear need on this roster. Most understand at this point that the Nuggets fall off a cliff when Nikola Jokic is on the bench, and part of that is because they don't have a reliable backup center. Instead they added Christian Wood as a versatile big man and traded that pick. To be honest, Detroit's draft will come down to its plans for its veterans. Someone needs to be able to play center when Bam Adebayo can't. A healthy Tyler Herro might have given the Heat just enough shot-creation to squeak past the Celtics, but as Pat Riley discussed at his season-ending press conference, Miami needs two-way players. The Bulls just used Alex Caruso to defend Giannis Antetokounmpo for a significant chunk of a playoff series. This should give you an idea of what players teams might be zeroing in on as Thursday's draft approaches. The deep 2022 NBA Draft will provide ample opportunity for teams to select a franchise-changing player, but not every organization is looking for a player with the same skill set.

2022 NBA Draft: Live Grades for Every Pick (Bleacher Report)

The future of the NBA starts right now. The 2022 draft has arrived and with it comes the promise of brighter tomorrows, ascending stars and, if everything.

He also fouls at an alarming rate ( 4.8 per 40 minutes), gets careless with the basketball and is prone to bouts of tunnel vision. Still, he has the handles, vision, stroke and motor of a glue guy. With the Cavaliers unlikely to select a center, Charlotte felt good enough about one falling to here to give up the No. 13 pick, and that’s exactly how it played out. When the shots aren’t falling (33.3 percent from three his final 12 contests), he basically just has defense and bounce at his disposal. As with Giddey, Daniels arrives in the Association with a shaky jump shot, and where that stroke eventually lands will determine what kind of career he has. Still, he could face a steep learning curve in the league, as his handle and shot selection both need copious amounts of seasoning. He pairs the burst of a track star with the aerial antics of a Cirque du Soleil performer to form a highlight-friendly arsenal. If there was a way to spend this pick and not have it lose trade value, this was probably the path, since Sharpe has such enormous potential. Murray is simultaneously old-ish for a top prospect (22 in August) and young for his skill set, which looks like it belongs to an NBA veteran. He doesn’t have quite as much shot-creation as you’d normally seek from a top-three pick, but he could tighten his handle with time, and if he does he’d be unstoppable. Smith’s mobility and defensive versatility should also make him a snug fit with Alperen Sengun, assuming Houston has the latter penciled in as its long-term center. He may be the best shooter in his class, which is high praise for anyone, let alone a 6’10” 19-year-old.

Grade: A His lack of explosiveness and ability to separate may keep him from taking over as a starting caliber player, but his production could help him stick as a depth piece on a Pacers team that needs more PG talent in the pipeline. He's young, and he might need a little while to be impactful for a franchise like Miami. He'll need to work on his body, but he can dribble, pass and shoot. That kind of expectation-exceeding season is super impressive and he could be a steal for a team that often finds them. I have LaRavia closer to 30 than 20, but the Grizzlies' draft history has earned credibility with picks like Brandon Clarke and Desmond Bane. Grade: B With the Rockets he can play with fellow SEC standout Jabari Smith as a defensive frontcourt. Charlotte needed to come out of this draft with a big man, and they may look back and regret that they didn't stick with Duren. But while Williams is not as high on my board as Duren was, he really can defend and this is the exact spot I had him mocked all along. Surprising that the Hornets, who need a center, traded this pick to the Knicks and then the Pistons, but what a move for them to join Ivey and their young core. His ability to guard multiple positions, and his potential as a shooter, are among the reasons he's a tantalizing prospect and one of the most versatile players available in this draft. He's a big, strong and skilled forward who could be an incredible building block in Orlando. Grade: A His jumper, at this point, is the biggest area of concern, but if the Pelicans can get that falling, he has a high ceiling. There are questions about whether he's actually going to be a point guard in the NBA, but now he's paired with Cade Cunningham, a natural distributor.

NBA draft 2022: Taking a look at each of the 58 picks and first-round ... (USA TODAY)

USA TODAY Sports will recap the entire 2022 NBA draft with all 58 picks, plus pick-by-pick analysis on each of the first-round selections.

Terry has good size at 6-7 with a 7-0 wingspan and the versatility to guard multiple positions on the perimeter. He averaged 18.8 points and 5.1 rebounds and shot 47.5% from the field and 40.7% on 3s. Williams was efficient on 3-pointers (39.6%) and inside the 3-point line (55.1%) and averaged 18 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 2021-22. LaRavia is a willing defender and has a knack for getting steals and creating in transition. He was named the 2022 SEC Sixth Man of the Year at LSU, where he averaged 16.9 points on 52.1% from the field. At 7-2 with a 7-6 wingspan and 9-9 standing reach, Williams has the tools and good mobility for his size to be an imposing presence around the rim. He fell to No. 11, which the Knicks reportedly traded to the Thunder. He played last season in Australia’s pro league for the New Zealand Breakers and averaged 8.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and an assist while shooting just 39.8% from the field and 27.1% on 3-pointers. But he improved as the season continued and was a much better scorer and shooter in the second half of the season. With a roster potentially in flux this summer, the Wizards need talent and landed on one of the best players remaining. He can play off the ball next to Tyrese Hailburton and Chris Duarte, while helping boost a Pacers offense that was 18th in efficiency and 25th in 3-point shooting. He can explode into the lane similar to Ja Morant and has the bounce to finish. The 6-10 Banchero averaged 17.2 points on 47.8% shooting from the field, in addition to 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals in his only season at Duke, which marked Mike Krzyzewski’ final season.

Bridges has emerged as a key piece on the Hornets, having a seemingly natural affinity with LaMelo Ball and showing possible All-Star potential. The trade was puzzling for many reasons as uncertainty surrounding the initial reporting.

Having said that, his upside as an athlete and as a defender is real enough to where I completely buy someone giving him real money. More than any other player in the class, I feel like he made a mistake entering the 2022 NBA Draft. He has a real chance to get lost in the shuffle because of how raw his offensive game is right now. I don’t think I’d feel totally comfortable throwing him into the deep end of an NBA game, because it’s so clear he’s working through his positioning and responsibility struggles, but it’s hard to find athleticism, length and a motor like his. Ismaël Kamagate is a fascinating project for a team, developmentally, because if everything works, he has a chance to work in ways that could portend success in the playoffs, a la Robert Williams. That’s the kind of athlete Kamagate is; he’s really light on his feet and knows how to use his length to take advantage of what opposing teams present to him. Here's what a MAC assistant coach had to say about Rollins: "Ryan has the makings of a 3-and-D guy at the next level. It’s possible the Indiana Pacers just got a steal at 48th overall, because athletically he is at the top of his class. I liked the flashes we saw from Kendall Brown early in the season, but his latter portion of the year tailed off in a significant way to where Baylor was actually a bit better when he was off the floor. I’m something of a believer in Mobley. I really like Spagnolo as a stash pick for a team in the early second round that is low on roster spots. The UConn player who utilized that chip on his shoulder will be headed to the pros. Has the ability to make tough shots." More than any other player, I thought JD Davison made a substantial mistake leaving college for the NBA Draft. He has real upside to play in the NBA at some point, but his skill set and tools are just so raw.

After the trade went down, Green took to Twitter to post a heartful farewell message to the City of Brotherly Love. It will be extremely interesting to see if either guy is ultimately able to claim a spot on the roster. Complete NBA Draft coverage Draft Tracker There's still a long road ahead of them, but with Cunningham leading the way, the future should be bright in Detroit. Duren is another tremendous athlete, though in the frontcourt, where he looked dominant at times for Memphis. While still raw from a pure offensive skill standpoint, he's huge, works hard and should contribute defensively right away. There was also a trade that went down the day before the draft, as the Pistons traded forward Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick (via the Milwaukee Bucks, protected Nos. 1-4) and multiple pick swaps. For example, on Wednesday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, who is as plugged in as anyone when it comes to the NBA, said to expect a lot of trades. Either way, it worked out for the Detroit Pistons, who were happy to take Ivey at No. 5. Perhaps they truly believe in Murray, or perhaps they were wary of taking a guard with their first pick for the third straight year. The Rockets had likely been planning on Banchero, but Smith should still fit in nicely as a sharp-shooting forward to pair with Jalen Green. For weeks, the expectation had been that they would take Jabari Smith out of Auburn, and it's still unclear if that was all an elaborate smokescreen or they changed their mind at the last minute.

NBA Draft 2022 winners & losers: Magic, Pistons pick future stars ... (Sporting News)

The Magic and Pistons made smart selections in the lottery, emerging as clear winners at the 2022 NBA Draft.

That is the most valuable NBA skill to have. The Lakers buying No. 35 from the Magic in exchange for cash and a future second-rounder isn't a giant move in the grand scheme of things. That should keep him on the floor for the Cavs, but it's hard to envision how he has major positive impact. This is a move on the margins, but it's a good one. We can't be sure exactly where those picks end up landing, but this is probably going to be a loss from a value perspective. The upside isn't really there, which is what you should shoot for when drafting in the lottery. Agbaji had a great tournament run, but six nationally televised games shouldn't supersede the other 116 games of his career. A little mystery is a nice thing. Everybody suspected that the Kings would take Jaden Ivey at No. 4. That passing acumen is indicative of a high feel level. I got to see Banchero up close at the Final Four, talk to his teammates and interview the people that were around him dating back to his middle school days. I'm a sucker for big men who can pass, and Banchero checks that box.

2022 NBA Draft serves up youth ... and a tasty appetizer to busy ... (NBA.com)

Teams at the top of the Draft doubled down on youth, while others geared up for a run at free agency.

Sharpe is the mystery of this Draft; the consensus No. 1-ranked high school player in the nation for 2022 graduated a semester early and enrolled at Kentucky in January to prepare for the 2022-23 college season. Well: Free agency doesn’t begin until July 1, and in the meantime, the Pistons seized the chance to capitalize on the draft by adding a second first-rounder in a three-team trade. The Pistons, Mavericks, Grizzlies, Hornets and Warriors all added players in the mid- to late-second round through trades. The Kings used the fourth pick on forward Keegan Murray of Iowa and hope he’s a keeper in more ways than one. When the night was over and all names were called, the Draft served its purpose. There was a common thread with the Blazers’ choice of Shaedon Sharpe at No. 7 and Portland’s Anfernee Simons, taken 24th in 2018. The top three projected picks eventually filled those slots in this draft; after Banchero and before Smith, Chet Holmgren, the gangly center from Gonzaga, went second to Oklahoma City. Then the draft suspense began. That doesn’t include forward Jonathan Issac, who essentially hasn’t played the last two seasons while recovering from a knee injury; he’s 24 and signed a rookie extension shortly after starting rehab on his leg. So the Magic’s decision was essentially between Banchero and Jabari Smith, who went to Houston at No. 3. With a stable of young guards — Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz — in the rotation, Orlando put a premium on securing the front line. The Magic chose Paolo Banchero from Duke, one of three players largely considered to be top-pick-worthy. BROOKLYN, N.Y. — What if they held an NBA Draft and it was mainly that — an actual draft instead of a chaotic trade carnival?

NBA draft 2022 winners and losers: Thunder, Pistons, Paolo ... (USA TODAY)

It was a big night for rebuilding rosters and young teams on the rise. Breaking down the biggest winners and losers from the 2022 NBA draft.

Yes, the Knicks are trying to carve out salary cap space to make a big move in free agency. The Lakers didn’t have a first-round pick — that went to New Orleans as part of the Anthony Davis trade in 2019. And maybe to the Kings, Murray was the best available. Last year, the Ignite’s Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga were taken second and seventh, and in next year’s draft, Ignite guard Scoot Henderson is a potential top-three pick. Both fit the mold of productive college players under the radar who have found success in Memphis. Ivey wanted to be in Detroit so badly he wept when his selection by the Pistons at No. 5 was announced. The Knicks regressed in 2021-22, going from a fourth-place team to 11th place. Up until Wednesday, the Lakers didn’t have a pick at all. He was thrilled it was No. 1 and by Orlando. "Man, I plan on bringing everything I have to Orlando. First off, just a winning mindset, a work-first mindset," he said, later adding, "I feel like this is a fantasy. GM Sam Presti added more young, high-upside depth to a rebuilding roster that should continue to make incremental strides while staying in position for French phenom Victor Wembanyama, the prize of the class of 2023 and next year's presumptive top pick. I dreamed of being in the NBA, but being the No. 1 overall pick, this is crazy." Who had the best and worst night?

NBA Draft 2022: Magic taking Paolo Banchero at No. 1 fooled the ... (CBSSports.com)

The top five picks of the NBA Draft turned out to be a relative shocker and may prove to be one of the more impactful drafts in NBA history.

But in their biggest moment in a generation on Thursday night, they twisted the future of the entire NBA — and fooled the rest of the league in doing so. The top five picks going on to be the five best guys, well that has never happened. That in mind, it's been a long time since the top of an NBA Draft felt this consequential. There's a reasonable chance the best player in this draft fell to them at No. 3. This was one of the more intriguing lead-ups into a draft in some time. In what could prove to be one of the most talented drafts in recent history, Orlando and Sacramento — two franchises that have been bad seemingly for generations — subverted expectations and gave us mayhem. If Smith hits huge and becomes the best player, it's not unreasonable we could look up in 2027 and see the Rockets competing for NBA Finals appearances while the Thunder and Magic are still picking in the lottery. Has this ever happened in the history of the draft? Will the Banchero and Murray picks prove to be savvy, or will those decisions backfire on the two notoriously underperforming franchises that made them? Ever since the night of the lottery, May 17, it seemed all the momentum was behind the idea that the Magic were going to go with convention and take Smith at No. 1. The beautiful commotion of all of this is: we don't know. Despite the fact that — as we previously laid out right here — the debate over who should go No. 1 was as compelling as we'd seen in years.

Much like when the Warriors took Poole, Baldwin Jr. is a bit of a reach. NBA scouts question his toughness on the defensive end, as well as his explosiveness and inability to make teammates better as Milwaukee clearly played better when he was out of the rotation. At Milwaukee, Baldwin Jr. played for his father Pat last season but as a freshman, he appeared in just 11 games. But with the current roster construction, the Warriors have the ability to give Baldwin Jr. time to develop before inserting him into the rotation. But they are taking a chance on a player with upside as opposed to someone who can help them win right now. Baldwin Jr. joins a Warriors team fresh off winning the 2022 NBA championship.

The At No. 10 it would've been nice to see the Wizards swing for the fences. Either way, he should serve as enticing trade fodder as the Blazers attempt to once again build a contender around -- to the Lakers for cash. The only knock here is Orlando trading one of its second-rounders -- pick 35! Holmgren could end up being the best player in the draft, so this is already a great night for OKC, and Dieng may have the biggest upside of any player taken in the late lottery. Christie provides shooting, which the Beauchamp is one of the older prospects in this draft with a strong pedigree coming off a big year with the G League Ignite, and Besson is a fabulous scorer from range at his size. Maybe not someone who can contribute next season in a major way, but a promising young prospect for the Smith might actually be a better fit for the Rockets given his ability to space the floor and defend multiple positions, and he'll join With its one and only pick in this year's draft, Boston grabbed a bat and swung for the fences at pick No. 53 in selecting Alabama's JD Davison. Davison is a former five-star recruit with a great pedigree who struggled at times last season in his one-and-done year with the Tide. However, he brings athleticism you rarely see in a point guard and showed enough as a playmaker to warrant a second-round flier. In reality, of course, drafts can't truly be judged until at least a few years down the line, when prospects have been given time to grow and be properly evaluated.

Winners, losers from the 2022 NBA Draft (ProBasketballTalk)

The 2022 NBA Draft saw a lot of trades, but only only bold move, which made the fans one of the losers on the night, while the Pistons were big winners.

They wanted their team to trade up and land a star in Jaden Ivey, or keep the No. 13 pick from that first trade and take the center of the future in Jalen Duren (now a Piston) or do something else bold. Smith is going to thrive in his role in Houston, and that makes the Rockets winners. Outside of the surprise at No. 1, there were no big trades, no record-scratch moments that shocked everyone. By the time Adam Silver said they were on the clock, it was clear the Magic would take Banchero. Some sharp bettors made a lot of money. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski even posted a definitive Tweet a little more than 12 hours before the draft saying Jabari Smith was going first, Chet Holmgren second, and Banchero third. A lot of what follows is my perception and opinion, which could be proven wrong in a few years.

Sochan also has some skill with the ball in his hands, showing the ability to handle the rock and make easy passing reads. The big question in his game is his shooting ability, both from three-point range and the free throw line. Sharpe has the frame and ball skills to blossom into a dominant force at the NBA level. Sochan is the best defensive forward in the class. On the perimeter, Sharpe has the framework and athleticism of a modern first option. Though he shot 45% from the field and 37% from three, he excelled in contested attempts but did struggle with isolation. He was one of the most productive players in the country as a freshman at Gonzaga, and has essentially aced every test he’s faced since first emerging as a top prospect in the high school ranks. Most draft prognosticators had Jaden Ivey out of Purdue as one of the top-four players in this class, with Murray on the outside looking in. This was an unexpected scenario for the Rockets, but a good one, in my opinion, as I feel Smith was the clear best player in the draft. Holmgren was our No. 2 prospect in the class, and feels like a great fit for the Thunder’s long-term rebuild. The 2022 NBA Draft features a star-studded class with four legitimate options to go No. 1 overall at the top of the board. We’ll be keeping you updated with every pick, as well as links to all of the great coverage around the SB Nation communities below the table.

The 10 best picks in the 2022 NBA draft (The Rookie Wire)

1. Detroit Pistons: Jaden Ivey, Purdue · 2. Portland Trail Blazers: Shaedon Sharpe, Kentucky · 3. Washington Wizards: Johnny Davis, Wisconsin · 4. Oklahoma City ...

His 6-foot-10 wingspan is very good as a guard and he has all of the potential to be a great player. It’s easy to see why he fell so far, but he has a lot of potential and could be a very valuable piece. All-in-all a great pick for the Bulls and definitely a guy who can stand out for the team The potential lottery pick fell all the way to 20th and it was way too good to pass up for the Spurs. The 19-year-old from Ohio State still has a lot to learn, but his upside is through the roof. The fact that he was picked 18th in the draft gives the Chicago Bulls real value at the pick and they definitely get a glue guy that will be great for them in the future. The 6-foot-6 wing from Kansas fits that 3-and-D mold to a T and he was one of the best shooters in the entire draft class. Another one of the best shooters in the draft, Griffin, adds a lot to this Atlanta Hawks team. Davis is a fantastic scorer at all three levels, and he was the most improved player in all of college basketball over the last season. The Thunder are in it for the long haul and this draft is where the turnaround will start. This was the steal of the draft and Portland got a phenomenal player. This was a fantastic move by the Thunder. Dieng may not have a lot of film on him, but he has a terrific skill set with All-Star upside. The thing that is so good about Ivey is his burst of speed and ability to attack the rim.

Grade: A Grade: A Grade: A Grade: A Grade: A He's not the shot-blocker Evan is but he is a floor-spacer who can shoot it well and showed some impressive playmaking at his size while at USC. Grade: A- Had some inconsistencies as a freshman but the former five-star recruit brings great length and major upside to Indiana. Grade: A I really like his finishing ability above the rim, but he is a very raw and unfinished product who is still learning the game. He's a big-bodied center with good physical tools and rim-running ability to go with an interesting pedigree as the winner of the EuroCup's Rising Star Award, which in the past has been won by Kristaps Porzingis and Jonas Valančiūnas. Grade: C I have LaRavia closer to 30 than 20, but the Grizzlies' draft history has earned credibility with picks like Brandon Clarke and Desmond Bane. Grade: B He's a big, strong and skilled forward who could be an incredible building block in Orlando. Grade: A His ability to guard multiple positions, and his potential as a shooter, are among the reasons he's a tantalizing prospect and one of the most versatile players available in this draft.

2022 NBA draft grades and analysis for every first-round pick (The Rookie Wire)

Rookie Wire went through and graded all 30 picks from the first round of the draft now that the smoke has cleared from the evening.

He is a good scorer and has great court vision while also taking care of the ball. Jovic can space the floor and has also shown promise as a ballhandler and rebounder, which are areas of need for Miami. He boasts prior professional experience now, which fits more on their timeline to win now, and should be able to step in immediately and play. The Spurs have instituted a great development system so we expect Wesley, and the rest of their picks, to flourish. Roddy figures to give the Grizzlies a floor-spacer given his ability to knock down shots from deep. Memphis needed to make a trade to get him, but the move to do so should be worth it in the end. The Rockets could use a versatile defender such as Eason on the roster and went and got their guy. His potential as a 3-and-D prospect will certainly be enticing as the Cavaliers emerged as an outstanding defensive team last season. He will help them win games next season, and for a team that had a catastrophic finish to the year, that will be a needed addition. The Pelicans absolutely hit a home run on Thursday as Daniels should become a fan favorite in no time. The rest of their roster is in flux right now, with Myles Turner and Malcolm Brogdon on the trade block, but Mathurin will be a good piece to their core. Ivey can not only help the Pistons next season, but he also has the potential to develop into a star in the NBA. The Pistons have a strong development system and it will be fun to see him grow next season and beyond. The first of three picks for the Thunder was a knockout.

2022 NBA Draft notebook: Magic introduce two rookies in Orlando ... (Orlando Pinstriped Post)

OPP was at the Amway Center Friday as the Orlando Magic introduced their two new rookies to the media.

And I know a few others who never stopped believing that Holmgren wasn’t in play to go to Orlando at number one because of his defensive acumen, incredible instincts, and massive length. In 2021, the five-star recruit (who re-classified to the Class of ‘21) was named a McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand Classic participant. But still, I think the second round is an appropriate time to take a chance on a rangy-wing with size such as Houstan possesses. I really thought Smith Jr. was going to be the pick for Orlando, because of his elite shooting prowess, to go along with his positional-size and defensive upside. The former Florida Gator was selected by Orlando fifth overall in 2000, and he’s one of only two players to ever be named NBA Rookie of the Year as a member of the Magic (the other being Shaquille O’Neal in ‘93). The Magic set the tone for the evening, surprising many around the league by taking Banchero over Smith Jr. I had all three of the perceived top prospects in this class (Banchero, Smith Jr., and Chet Holmgren) fairly even throughout my pre-draft evaluation period. “There was a lot of excitement last night, a lot of emotions. Banchero is well aware that becoming a number one overall pick of the Orlando Magic comes with exceedingly high expectations, considering two of the organization’s former first overall selections (O’Neal in 1992, Dwight Howard in 2004) led their respective teams to NBA Finals berths. “I knew there was a chance,” Banchero told reporters, when asked whether he knew he was going to be the first overall selection. I think you learn about what works (and what doesn’t work), so it definitely helped me a lot - more than I can explain.” Houstan, who is the first second round pick the Magic have rostered since 2018, led the Wolverines in made three-point field goals (60 3PTM’s, 35.5 percent) in 2021-22. Banchero told media members Friday that he didn’t even know about Orlando’s intentions to draft him until right before the pick was made.

NBA Draft 2022: Adam Silver shouts out Warriors in opening ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

The Warriors don't have a lottery pick, but they got a shoutout from the commissioner.

The goal is to create the best competition and sometimes creating the best competition means sharing top talent around the league.” And clearly, as the commissioner stated in front of the basketball world on Thursday, Golden State’s front office has done nearly everything right in the last decade – starting with making smart draft picks. “Even the very notion of a draft, you’re taking one of the poorest performing teams, and the partners are coming together and saying let’s give them one of the best incoming players in the league,” Silver said. “And in this case, Golden State was able to keep them but pays a high luxury tax in order to do that. “But what has remained the same is the core of that Warriors team. “A lot has changed in our country and world in the three years since the Warriors were last in the Finals,” Silver said.
