When he was speaking in 2021, Bitcoin was surging in price and would reach a height of $63,000 in April that year. Speaking at an event on climate change hosted by TechCrunch, Gates said he preferred investing in assets with tangible outputs, like farms or factories, “or a company where they make products,” and that he held no position in cryptocurrencies or NFTs. “I’m not involved in that. “I do think people get bought into these manias who may not have as much money to spare,” said Gates in 2021.

Gates has criticized crypto before, sparring with Elon Musk last year over whether Bitcoin is too risky for retail investors and the environmental harm of mining coins. Speaking Tuesday as the founder of Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the climate-focused fund he began in 2015, Gates noted the difficulty of recruiting Silicon Valley engineers to work in industries like chemicals and steel production in need of lower greenhouse gas emissions. Billionaire Bill Gates dismissed cryptocurrency projects such as nonfungible tokens as shams “based on the greater-fool theory” at a climate conference Tuesday, reviving past criticisms of digital assets.

Bill Gates Says NFTs Are Based on 'Greater Fool Theory' (Entrepreneur)

At a TechCrunch event, Bill Gates says NFTs are based on "greater fool theory," continuing the billionaire's criticism of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

In early 2021, Gates voiced hesitation about regular investors shelling out fortunes for Bitcoin. "I do think people get bought into these manias who may not have as much money to spare," said Gates in a 2021 interview. When it comes to investing, the Microsoft co-founder still believes in the value of putting money towards assets with tangibility, "like a farm where they have output, or like a company where they make products," further reiterating his disbelief in the inherent value of digital assets. The tech billionaire dismissed digital assets — particularly NFTs — as " 100% based on greater fool theory" while speaking at a climate conference hosted by TechCrunch on Tuesday. In essence: the assets will only go up in price so long as enough investors are willing to pay more for them, making the assets void of any real value when investors aren't present.
