Warriors vs. Celtics: Nine plays that explain Golden State's pivotal ... (CBSSports.com)

In the first four games of the NBA Finals, Golden State progressively tilted its attack toward Curry running high pick-and-rolls. It started Game 5, however, ...

It's a great read by Curry with Smart top-locking him, and it's another perfect pass from Green. But it's also an example of the Warriors getting used to their opponent -- they know that Williams is ignoring Payton, which makes him a dangerous screener. (In fact, he missed all six of his 3-point attempts.) When Curry was cold and the team needed him to bail out a possession, he obliged. In this case, that means Green pushing the pace when the Warriors don't have the numbers and sending a bounce pass exactly where it needed to go to turn a 2-on-3 break into two points -- at exactly the right time. With nine minutes to go and the Warriors on a 13-0 run, Marcus Smart ran a dribble-handoff with Brown way outside the 3-point line. Curry looks at Wiggins after the pass, first pointing at Thompson and then calling for the ball himself. Because the Warriors had nine steals to Boston's two, and five of those Golden State steals led directly to buckets on the other end. After hearing Boston lament its "stagnant" late-game offense in the previous game, this was a tough look. This is my favorite of Curry's eight assists, and it demonstrates why the Celtics have been reluctant to put two on the ball against him. He gives the ball up to Green, who fires a lefty pass to Klay Thompson on the opposite side. Tatum got into the paint with good spacing around him, collapsed the defense, made Andre Iguodala think he was passing to Jaylen Brown in the corner and hit Horford for an open 3. Scoring against the Celtics is exhausting, and they believe that, if they are locked in and limit their mistakes, the opponent will eventually wear down. The Celtics have done a fantastic job defending Golden State's off-ball actions, but that doesn't mean coach Steve Kerr is going to default to static pick-and-rolls.

NBA Finals Game 5, Warriors vs. Celtics live updates: Andrew ... (USA TODAY)

Andrew Wiggins took the lead while Steph Curry and Klay Thompson played the supporting role as the Warriors topped the Celtics for a 3-2 series lead.

On Sunday, Thompson was asked to reflect on that moment and what it meant to be back in the Finals after all he had to go through. "When I hurt my knee, it was kind of unchartered territory for me because I had been able to be consistently present in the lineup my whole career. "There has been," then-NBA Commissioner David Stern said at the start of the 2013-14 season, "an abiding sense amongst our teams, and they've stated two things: One, in a 2-2 series, it's sort of not fair for the team with the better record to be away. The Warriors have gotten off to sluggish starts in the NBA Finals so far, but that wasn’t the case during Game 5. That's a testament to Green's 6-for-26 shooting in the Finals. Even his mother trolled him on Twitter. Jerry West of the L.A. Lakers remains the only player in league history to win MVP from a losing team. The third quarter has normally been the Warriors time to shine, but the Celtics opened the second half on a 10-0 run. He didn’t even attempt a shot before he was uncharacteristically pulled for a breather by Ime Udoka with 4:48 minutes left in the first quarter. It was the first time in the series that a team won consecutive games. Are the Warriors in position to finally make a breakthrough? Klay Thompson started to heat up in the third quarter. It might seem like the Warriors are prepared to make a run to the title.

Warriors vs. Celtics score: Golden State wins Game 5 to take pivotal lead over Boston in NBA Finals · The Warriors responded well after blowing a 16-point lead · Poole: Warriors trying to stay "locked in" · Williams: "Our backs are up against the wall".

It was an all around team effort for the Warriors in Game 5, and it was sorely needed with Curry having an off night. Several of his 3s were hitting off the front of the rim, suggesting his legs were exhausted from carrying the team to a win in Game 4. Thompson had by far his best performance of the series, going 5 of 11 from downtown, and being the only Warriors starter to connect on a 3-pointer. We were bound to get a bad Curry game at some point, and when it happened the attention would turn to which of the Warriors players would pick up the slack. After being an absolute force on the glass in Game 4 to help the Warriors win, Wiggins followed that performance up with an even better showing: 26 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals. The Golden State Warriors are one win away from continuing their dynasty with another championship following their 104-94 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night.

We discuss our favorite same-game parlay of Game 5 of the 2022 NBA Finals between the Warriors and Celtics, including top-value player props like Jayson ...

He’s arguably the C’s best passer and certainly their best playmaker. We’ve discussed in depth that Tatum has not looked like a superstar this NBA Finals. Hats off to Wiggins for playing superb defense on him and never letting him get fully comfortable. His coaches and teammates don’t have confidence in him, and at this rate, he doesn’t have confidence in himself. Expect more of the same in Game 5. For a team that loves launching three-pointers in crunch time, the Celtics sure hate crashing the boards. Kerr also took Draymond Green out for Looney for a crucial four-minute stretch in the fourth quarter, then subbed the veteran in for Jordan Poole for just defensive possessions in the final three minutes. Wiggins had 11 in the second half – nobody in green and white even finished with more than five second-half rebounds. The Warriors had as many second-half offensive boards as Boston had second-half defensive boards. However, Golden State and the best shooter of all time won’t lose Game 5 and risk elimination in Boston. Should we expect another massive upset by Team Green? Will this Golden State squad – with three championships since 2015 – hold onto home-court advantage after losing it at the start of the series and regaining it on Friday? Now Golden State looks to take a crucial 3-2 lead at home, putting all the pressure on the Celtics. We have all the betting coverage you could dream of for this evening’s pivotal game, including our favorite same-game parlay and correlating player props.

Warriors vs. Celtics: Why Stephen Curry's snapped 3-point streak ... (CBSSports.com)

Curry finished 0-for-9 from deep but Golden State got the win in Game 5 against Boston.

After a historic start to this series, becoming the first player in history to make at least five 3-pointers in four straight Finals games, Curry finished 0-for-9 from 3 in Game 5, and he doesn't care one bit. It wasn't just Curry who was cold from deep on Monday. The Warriors missed 31 3-pointers as a team (9-for-40), which is tied the record for the second-most misses ever compiled in a Finals win. "Track record says I'll shoot the ball better next game," Curry said. Entering Game 5 of the 2022 Finals, Stephen Curry made at least one 3-pointer in 132 consecutive postseason games (which, incidentally, is every postseason game in which he'd ever played), and he'd made multiple 3-pointers in 38 straight playoff games. I like Steph coming off of a game like this, too. Counting the regular season, Curry had made at least one 3-pointer in 233 consecutive games.

Warriors vs. Celtics: Stephen Curry is torching Boston's drop ... (CBSSports.com)

Drop coverage against Curry is failure. Always has been. It invites the greatest shooter in NBA history to dribble into pull-up 3s against a retreating big man, ...

It's been the source of great frustration for many Warriors fans over the last five years because Curry is so deadly in pick-and-roll. It opens up Thompson for catch-and-shoot 3s, his forte, rather than having to create more off the dribble as Boston stays conventional in its Curry coverages. That would've registered as the best rating in the league in the regular season, and it's nearly three points per 100 better than Golden State scored with Curry on the court during the regular season. Udoka has said he believes the Celtics would be up 3-1, at least, in this series had they just played sounder offense themselves, and he might be right. Still, it's hard to imagine Udoka letting Curry ignite again in Game 5 without at least trying something different, if only here and there. The Celtics have only blitzed three times in this series. He doesn't want to put the ball in the hands of one player as everyone else stands around waiting for secondary involvement or spot-up 3s. I wrote about this after Game 1, in which Curry stormed out of the gates with a Finals record six first-quarter 3-pointers because Boston's bigs were starting below the 3-point line on pick-and-roll, then retreating from there. It invites the greatest shooter in NBA history to dribble into pull-up 3s against a retreating big man, with the only contest coming from the guard fighting over the top of the screen, who just isn't going to get there in time. In this series, the Warriors are scoring over 116.9 points per 100 possessions when Curry is on the court. The goal is to split the difference: Show just high enough to discourage Curry's pull-up, but then quickly retreat to avoid letting him turn the corner past the slower big and get downhill. They trust their bigs to switch, though they haven't done a ton of that with Curry either.

The Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics face off on Thursday at TD Garden in Boston in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

Golden State is the all-around better team and I expected a bounce-back performance from Curry to help them secure an NBA Finals victory. Devon Platana writes: "After winning back-to-back contests, I expect the Warriors to close out the Celtics in Game 6. The prediction and odds for this game also favors a win for the Celtics." It writes: "For the Celtics, the Game 6 becomes a do-of-die game. It predicts that the total will go over. The Warriors and Celtics will face off in Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals on Monday night at TD Garden. We break down the odds and highlight the best bets, ...

However, in three losses, Brown has been held to 18.6 points (34.8 percent from the field), seven rebounds, and three assists per game. The 25-year-old has played extremely well in the Celtics’ two wins in this series, averaging 25.5 points (49.9 percent from the field), eight rebounds, and five assists per game. Meanwhile, the Warriors are producing 16.3 points per game off of turnovers in the playoffs and 16.1 ppg on the road. It would take an offensive outburst that we saw in Game 1 or Game 3 to surpass the 210.5 total, and it’s hard to see that with two of the best defensive teams in the playoffs. It’s unlikely that he’ll go 0-for again considering that prior to Monday night, he hadn’t had a game without at least one made three-pointer since Nov. 8, 2018, and the last time he had consecutive games without a made three-pointer was in November of 2012. With the way he's boxing out and competing inside the paint, you should hammer the OVER. Wiggins has been the Warriors’ second-best player in this series, and that should continue on the road in Boston. The Warriors showcased their championship DNA in the past two games, which has them on the brink of winning their fourth title in as many years. Thompson produced another efficient outing in Game 5, posting 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 5-of-11 from three-point range. White and Williams were outscored and outplayed by Jordan Poole and Gary Payton II (20 points, 10-of-16 FG, 4-of-9 from three). This cannot happen again in Game 6, or the Celtics’ will be in trouble. In Game 5, Derrick White and Grant Williams were non-existent, scoring a combined four points (1-of-6 FG, 0-of-4 from three) in 37 minutes. Heading into Game 6, the Warriors are 5-1 with a 3-2 series lead under head coach Steve Kerr. However, Golden State has not fared well on the road in the postseason, going 4-5. Golden State is one win away from hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy after defeating Boston 104-94 in Game 5 on Monday night.

Warriors vs. Celtics: How a play starring Andrew Wiggins showed ... (CBSSports.com)

With a roaring crowd behind him, Wiggins zoomed past Derrick White through an empty lane into an unguarded basket for the capper to his career night. Wait a ...

Watch as a defender that otherwise might have shifted over to contest Wiggins refuses to take his eyes off of Curry because the thought of doing so for even a moment was more threatening to him than a wide-open dunk. Just take in the moment that repeats itself dozens of times throughout every single Warriors game, the one where the opposing defense is so petrified by the idea of Curry taking even a contested shot that they're willing to sacrifice an open one. When a team decides to acquire a player, especially one as expensive as Wiggins, they're doing so with the belief that the player in question is suited to playing off of their star or stars. But in this scenario, Curry is still the star that Wiggins is orbiting. There isn't a Warrior that can do for him what he does for them, so he's been forced to create the bulk of his own shots through pick-and-roll. Some version of this dilemma plays out on almost every Golden State basket that isn't scored by Curry. If you want to understand where the overwhelming majority of Warriors points come from, you only need to watch a possession and ask yourself "where is Steph?" That will typically take you in the right direction. Of course, Looney is so big that he can initially angle the screen directly behind Smart, but at the last second slide up a step to throw off White, who he knows will be meeting Wiggins after the inevitable switch. Jayson Tatum should have been the low-man here, sliding into the lane and off of Gary Payton II in order to contest Wiggins at the basket, but he's a wing used to playing in gigantic lineups. He's so stuck on Curry that by the time he evens looks back toward the basket, Wiggins is already in the air. White starts the possession on Stephen Curry, but when Curry scampers down to the corner, the Celtics don't even wait for a Kevon Looney screen to preemptively switch. With a roaring crowd behind him, Wiggins zoomed past Derrick White through an empty lane into an unguarded basket for the capper to his career night. White, 6-4 and skinny, was at the other end of that preemptive Boston switch, and he follows Looney back up the floor.
