Rise of the nice guy: Andrew Wiggins erases rare Curry dud in NBA ... (The Guardian)

The former No 1 overall pick has long been accused of failing to fulfill his potential. But he was crucial to the Warriors taking a 3-2 series lead.

In total the Celtics committed a fatal 18 turnovers to the Warriors’ six. But on Monday at Chase Center he was merciless, impassioned, effective and emphatic as the Celtics lost back-to-back games for the first time in this season’s playoffs. The defining image of this game was not Curry sinking a shot from distance but Wiggins bustling to the basket and crashing down a dunk to hand the Warriors a 15-point lead with about two minutes remaining. Not to mention family bragging rights: his father, Mitchell, was on the Houston Rockets team that lost to the Celtics in the 1986 finals. But it was the all-round excellence of Andrew Wiggins that helped disrupt the visitors while ably compensating for Curry’s below-par production. Curry followed his 43-point Game 4 genius-storm with a tepid 16-point effort, the presumptive NBA finals MVP an inconceivable zilch-for-nine from beyond the arc.

Warriors on the Brink of Most Unexpected Title in Dynasty Run (Sports Illustrated)

On a night that Stephen Curry struggled, Golden State found help from a cast of afterthoughts and reclamation projects.

And then, with the quarter down to its final seconds, and the Warriors racing upcourt in transition, Wiggins swung the ball to Poole, who calmly drilled a 38-foot bank shot at the buzzer for a 75-74 lead. The Warriors had given up a 16-point lead on Monday and fallen behind by five points late in the third quarter. and the fact that you had four guys step up in meaningful ways to help us win.” Payton’s season was in doubt six weeks ago, after a hard foul in the second round fractured his left elbow. From Jordan Poole, who was still logging time in the G League last year, and who has been alternately electric and erratic all postseason. Everyone on this team, this organization, they support you and they want to see you do good.” From Andrew Wiggins, the former No. 1 overall pick who was deemed a bust in Minnesota and jettisoned by the Timberwolves two years ago. The ever-serene Thompson drilled a pair of deep threes. They have two chances to close the series: in Boston on Thursday or, if necessary, back home on Sunday. If Thompson is feeling unusually philosophical now, it’s wholly understandable, given the journey he’s taken since the Warriors were last on this stage. And yet, suddenly, the scoring sprang from everywhere… Even for the NBA’s sole reigning dynasty.

Warriors' NBA Finals Game 5 victory was 'checkbook win,' Brian ... (NBC Sports)

The Warriors went from "Steph Curry has no help" to "They paid for this title" in the span of three days.

But the Warriors aren't breaking any rules in order to have this roster. They are able to go over the salary cap to pay their own players. When that didn't work out, they turned him into Wiggins, but most pundits wondered if he would fit considering his track record in Minnesota. Taking nothing away from Andrew Wiggins but this was a checkbook win for the Warriors." "Andrew Wiggins is not an underdog," Windhorst told Scott Van Pelt on "SportsCenter" moments after the game. You don't just have to beat the Warriors on the court, you've got to beat their checkbook.

Eye-popping NBA Finals stat details importance of Warriors winning ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

This stat shows just how important it is that the Warriors win Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

Fortunately for the Warriors, they're well-versed in defying the numbers. As mentioned in the graphic, Boston is 7-0 following a loss in the playoffs this year and has won eight road playoff games this postseason, one behind the all-time record. According to NBA Communications, it is the 31st time that a Finals series has been tied at two games apiece and in the previous 30 instances, the team that wins Game 5 went on to win the series 73.3 percent of the time.

Warriors punish Celtics for frigid start to Game 5, move to cusp of title (The Washington Post)

Golden State dominated early and overcame a quiet night from Stephen Curry to move within a win of another championship.

Buckner: The Celtics should be on their way to the title. That’s the part where we’ve got to have carry-over, not only game to game but quarter to quarter.” Yet the Celtics also found themselves in uncharted waters as they fell to 7-1 in these playoffs after a loss. In the decisive sequence, Wiggins scored 10 fourth-quarter points and threw down a thunderous dunk that proved to be the dagger. Later, Draymond Green and Tatum engaged in a jostling match in front of the Celtics bench. At several moments in the fourth, the Celtics appeared to crack under the pressure. Boston committed 18 turnovers and fell to 0-7 in this postseason when it turns the ball over at least 16 times. Boston did its best to make up for its slow start by briefly grasping control in the third quarter. With the victory, Golden State moved to the cusp of its fourth title in the past eight seasons. Golden State reclaimed the lead by the end of the third period and pushed ahead to start the fourth. It was a great effort, but we’ve got to rev it back up and do it again.” But we’ve got a lot of talent and depth to make up for that.

The Celtics beat themselves with turnovers and missed free throws in Game 5 as they fell to the Warriors, 104-94. Here are our takeaways from the loss as ...

As for Jaylen Brown, he struggled mightily in the first half with four points on 2-of-10 shooting, along with three turnovers. While he did his part to get Boston back into the game, Tatum once again failed to make his presence felt in the fourth quarter. Tatum's night got off to a rough start with a turnover on the C's first possession. Wiggins came out firing with 16 points in the first half, his postseason career-high for a single half. They ended up outscoring the Celtics by 15 in the quarter to earn a 104-94 win and a 3-2 series lead. But Jordan Poole shifted the momentum back in the Golden State Warriors' favor with a 33-footer to end the frame, and Boston wouldn't recover.

The Warriors have their first series lead of the NBA Finals over the Celtics and are now just one win away from a title.

Curry returned to the floor with 7:44 remaining in regulation with an 85-77 lead and the Celtics would never get closer than that. Boston jumped out to a 19-4 run in the second half and took their first lead of the game. Thompson, Poole, and Wiggins scored all of Golden State’s points in a 10-0 run to start the quarter. In spite of Steph Curry’s least efficient offensive quarter of the series, the Dubs led 27-16 at the end of the first quarter. Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins, in particular, set the tone with their best stretch of the NBA Finals. Green was all over the floor defensively, and, for the first time in the series, he had early success scoring. After defending their home floor in a 104-94 victory over the Boston Celtics, the Dubs have a 3-2 series lead and are just one victory away from winning their first title since 2018.

Warriors observations: Andrew Wiggins leads Dubs to brink of NBA ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Despite an off-night from Steph Curry, the Warriors beat the Celtics in Game 5 of the NBA Finals behind 26 points and 13 rebounds from Andrew Wiggins.

The Warriors had won the third quarter in each of the first four games and came into Game 5 outscoring the Celtics by 49 points in the frame. But the Celtics caught fire and opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run. He was phenomenal in the first quarter, scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds. He also was a one-man show too often for the Warriors. His teammates promised to give him more help after he scored 43 points in Game 4, and they came through when needed most. Then, the Celtics gave them a scare in the third quarter before the Warriors buckled down and put this game away. He fouled out with three minutes remaining and was a game-high plus-13 at the time.

Warriors pick perfect timing to step up for Steph Curry in NBA Finals (NBC Sports Bay Area)

After carrying the Warriors for the first four games of the NBA Finals, Steph Curry's teammates took over to have them one win from being champions.

Tonight is a great start, and I look forward to going into Game 6 with the same energy and effort." Thompson was behind only Wiggins with 21 points, and was an efficient 7-for-14 from the field and 5-for-11 from 3-point range. From the opening tip, it was clear Wiggins was bringing the energy and force required for a Warriors win. Before fouling out with three minutes left in the game, Green scored eight points to go with eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal. He's going to be livid going into Game 6, and that's exactly what we need." But in the fourth quarter, he scored 10 points, went 5-for-6 from the field, snatched five rebounds and was a plus-15. He can smell the taste of another ring. He was then held scoreless in the third quarter and only grabbed one rebound as the Warriors were outscored by 11 points. In the past two games, he has taken his overall game to new heights. Scoring a team-high 26 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds, the quiet and soft-spoken small forward might as well have taken a bow at halfcourt. Curry carried the Warriors up to this point. Curry finally turned down the heat and went cold Monday night at Chase Center, scoring only 16 points on 7-for-22 overall.

Warriors-Celtics NBA Finals: Why Stephen Curry's snapped 3-point ... (CBSSports.com)

Curry finished 0-for-9 from deep but Golden State got the win in Game 5 against Boston.

After a historic start to this series, becoming the first player in history to make at least five 3-pointers in four straight Finals games, Curry finished 0-for-9 from 3 in Game 5, and he doesn't care one bit. It wasn't just Curry who was cold from deep on Monday. The Warriors missed 31 3-pointers as a team (9-for-40), which is tied the record for the second-most misses ever compiled in a Finals win. "Track record says I'll shoot the ball better next game," Curry said. Entering Game 5 of the 2022 Finals, Stephen Curry made at least one 3-pointer in 132 consecutive postseason games (which, incidentally, is every postseason game in which he'd ever played), and he'd made multiple 3-pointers in 38 straight playoff games. I like Steph coming off of a game like this, too. Counting the regular season, Curry had made at least one 3-pointer in 233 consecutive games.

5 takeaways from the Warriors' Game 5 victory in 2022 NBA Finals (NBA.com)

Andrew Wiggins steps up, Jaylen Brown steps back, and the Warriors are one step away from the title.

After that, the Warriors owned the fourth quarter and claimed the win. In that quarter, the Celtics flipped the momentum in their favor. And when the Celtics can’t break 100 points, that’s a recipe for disaster. This was partly due to poor play from the bench, putting more pressure on Brown and Tatum to produce. So Curry finally had a performance more in line with mortality and shot 7-for-22, the Warriors fumbled away a lead, and another game was up for grabs, and what do the Celtics do? The Celtics twisted themselves in a knot to find a way. Still, it was a risky decision by coach Ime Udoka; Brown and Tatum draw all the attention and therefore must work harder than others. it was the perfect storm and avalanche, much of it self-inflicted. If you want to know how the Celtics did, look no further than Brown and study his performance. So, let’s recap: Golden State loses Kevin Durant to the Nets, gets D’Angelo Russell from Brooklyn in the transaction, has no use for D-Lo, sends him to Minnesota for an underachiever whose contract was poisonous to 28 other teams … and now is watching him potentially help them to a title. It was officially a wrap — with a nice bowtie, much like his ferocious dunk on Luka Doncic in the Western Conference finals. That player today has chopped up the Celtics’ main weapon, emphatically delivered on back-to-back games in this series, and hasn’t blinked once in the bright lights.

Boston, on the other hand, looked daunted and suffered a second consecutive defeat for the first time in this postseason. He had 14 points on the night and renaissance man Gary Payton II, who fractured his elbow just a month before the NBA Finals started, was also a big contributor in Game 5 with 15 points and 5 rebounds. As for Wiggins, who has been the Dubs' second-best player in the series by a distance, he had multiple highlight plays. Tatum looked like he was on the cusp of his best performance of the finals for a spell in the third quarter but he undid that work with some poor decisions and on two separate occasions, the 24-year-old missed both free throws after being fouled. Curry, for his part, failed to make a three-pointer in an NBA game for the first time since November 8, 2018. Andrew Wiggins was the star man on this occasion, impressing with his scoring, defense and rebounding in a magnificent all-round display.
