Golden State needed every bit of Wiggins' contributions on Monday. Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry was limited to 16 points and failed to hit a three-pointer in the entire game, ending his streak of 233 straight games with a triple. He was aggressive in attacking the basket and also played some strong defense throughout Monday's game. After being drafted No. 1 overall in 2014, Wiggins has largely fallen short of the expectations placed on him when he came out of Kansas. But the 27-year-old seems to have finally put it all together this season, which earned him his first career selection to the All-Star Game as a starter. Wiggins put up 26 points and 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double in the series. The Warriors will be taking a 3-2 lead into Boston for Thursday's Game 6, and Wiggins is relishing the chance to win the first championship of his career. Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins helped lead the team to a 104-94 win over the Boston Celtics in Monday's Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

"He's embraced the challenge of consistency and what he's capable of doing on both ends of the floor," Curry said. "In a situation like this series where things are not as smooth and you have some rough patches, he finds a way to respond with the right energy and approach and toughness that, if you're watching the game, you notice him at all times because he's kind of everywhere," Curry said. In addition to Wiggins, Kerr named Green and Gary Payton II as central figures on that end of the floor. "I mean, buying in is one of the biggest keys to success in this league, and for what Andrew did tonight, I mean, we don't get -- we don't get more excited than when Wiggs dunks on somebody," Klay Thompson said. All season long, the Warriors have hung their hats on being a defense-first team -- a notion that's not necessarily obvious because the roster boasts two of the NBA's best, most dangerous shooters. Boston jumped out to a 19-4 run in the second half and took their first lead of the game. Thompson, Poole, and Wiggins scored all of Golden State’s points in a 10-0 run to start the quarter. In spite of Steph Curry’s least efficient offensive quarter of the series, the Dubs led 27-16 at the end of the first quarter. But the Warriors have Wiggins. He has had a sterling postseason and is topping it off with a monumental run at the most crucial time in this frantic NBA Finals, ...

“It’s something I dreamt about for sure, being in the league, and this is the ultimate stage,” Wiggins said. That’s a guy — you want a guy like that, when the stage gets big, they respond and play their best basketball, and that’s what he’s been doing.” He’s attacking shot-blocker Robert Williams (not very effectively, but somebody’s got to do it). He’s in Tatum’s face on every defensive possession and smacking at the basketball every chance he gets. “He loves the competition. “He loves the challenge,” Steve Kerr said. And we need him to do that for one more win. If they were going to win another title, they definitely needed him guarding the best wing players, digging out some rebounds and taking advantage of the space provided when defenses overloaded on Curry. They needed him. A neon indication: He’s played 40, 43 and another 43 minutes in the past three games, by far the most on the team, almost entirely matched against Tatum. Yes, the Warriors are now only one win away from the fourth championship of this era and the first since they acquired Wiggins in a February 2020 trade. “We don’t get more excited than when Wiggs dunks on somebody (and) mean mugs them,” Klay Thompson said of Wiggins’ flying dunk over Derrick White and quick glare to help seal the victory late in the fourth quarter. So his teammates love it when he gets a little bit out of character and glares at somebody after a massive dunk. That came after Wiggins scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Warriors’ Game 4 victory in Boston to support Stephen Curry’s epic 43-point, 10-rebound performance.

On a night when Steph Curry was ordinary, Andrew Wiggins was extraordinary to lead the Warriors to the brink of the NBA championship.

The support system, everyone on this team, this organization, they support you and they want to see you do good, and they put you in a position to do good. "The bigger the challenge has been that we've thrown in front of him, the bigger he's responded," Green said. At the end of the day, no matter what it takes or whatever they need from me, I'm here to help them win." You kind of need to find the right place, the right teammates, that kind of stuff. Kevin Durant left for Brooklyn in free agency, and Klay Thompson wasn’t going to play in 2019-20 after sustaining a torn ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 Finals against Toronto. "Great people here that challenge you," Wiggins said. "I was out there being aggressive," the understated Wiggins said. When the stage gets big, they respond and play their best basketball, and that's what he's been doing." By comparison, Curry is averaging 30.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.8 steals and is shooting 46.6% from the field and 41.7% on 3-pointers. “He's found such a crucial role on our team, and I think that empowers him," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. Curry struggled in Game 5, just 16 points on 9-for-22 shooting, and he missed his nine 3-point attempts, the first time he didn’t make a 3 in 133 career playoff games. On a night when Curry was ordinary, Wiggins was extraordinary.
