NBA Finals Game 4 recap: Warriors' trio nears record for Finals wins ... (USA TODAY)

The Celtics and Warriors are now tied 2-2 in the 2022 NBA Finals, thanks to an impressive 43-point performance from an injured Steph Curry.

He was credited with leading Brooklyn from 20 wins in his first season to 42-40 record in 2018-19 — the Nets’ first playoff berth since 2015. The Warriors will have Steph Curry on the floor. Well, Draymond Green received a similar treatment in TD Garden during Game 3, so much so that his wife called on the league to take action. When asked what needs to change for Game 4, Poole told reporters on Thursday, “Just being able to take what the defense gives us. He has 15 fouls and 15 points in the entire series. Green has had foul trouble in the 2022 NBA Finals, fouling out in Game 1 and Game 3. Steve Kerr is shaking up the lineup for Game 4: He started Otto Porter Jr. in place of Kevon Looney. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green round out the Warriors' starting lineup. This marks his third 30-point plus game of the series, but Curry is going to need some offensive help if the Warriors are going to win this pivotal game on the road. He picked up 2 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal before picking up his second foul and being pulled from the game with 4:18 left in the first. He hit the free throw to put the Celtics up 91-86. He’s scored 6 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. In 2015, they trailed the Cleveland Cavaliers 2-1 before Game 4 in Cleveland.

Stephen Curry shakes off injury, wills Warriors to Game 4 win to knot ... (The Washington Post)

Golden State's star fought through a Game 3 foot injury to take control of Game 4, lifting the Warriors to a 107-97 win that evened the NBA Finals.

For Steph to take that kind of pressure all game long and still be able to defend on the other end [is big]. I think this is the strongest he’s ever been in his career, and it allows him to do what he’s been doing.” For the fourth time in the series, the Warriors outscored the Celtics in the third quarter, this time erasing a five-point halftime deficit to take a 79-78 lead into the fourth quarter. “The things he does we kind of take for granted from time to time. Curry’s fingerprints were all over that push, as he held his follow-through after drilling a three-pointer from the top of the key and sneaked into the left corner to hit another. In the tightest game of this series, Curry displayed what he often calls his “championship DNA.” As Boston missed open looks from three down the stretch, Curry knocked in a one-legged runner, made a three-pointer from the right angle with just under two minutes left and then ran a pick and roll with Draymond Green to set up a layup for Kevon Looney in the game’s final minute. Curry’s optimism about the extent of his injury — he insisted it wasn’t as bad as a left foot sprain he suffered in March — proved well-founded, as he showed no ill effects.

The Warriors can enjoy this win for now, but it’s back to San Francisco to prepare for the biggest game of the series. Curry sinks two more free throws, finishing with 43 points on the night. He finds Draymond on the roll, and Green draws and dishes to Looney for the easy layup. The Warriors turn it over, but Boston bricks another open 3-pointer — this one from Al Horford following great defense by Thomson to close Brown’s driving lane and force him to pass. I know it's baked into the style, but it's just unsurvivable against a team this good at making it hard for you to score under ideal circumstances. 6. Brown converts back-to-back driving layups off Warriors turnovers to give the Celtics a four-point lead with 7:32 left. 8. Curry scores 14 of his 33 points in the third to give Golden State a 79-78 lead heading into the final quarter. Is this the beginning of another dominant third quarter from the Warriors? A Curry runner is followed by a Tatum 3-pointer (he’s 3-for-3 from deep so far), then Jordan Poole got this to go against the Time Lord’s defensive wall: 14. Boston is making a push late in the first half, ripping off a 10-0 run to turn a three-point deficit into a seven-point lead with just under three minutes remaining. Wiggins has a pair of 3-pointers and a nice step-back shot from the post; he’s looked great so far as a scoring complement to Curry. Here are 24 thoughts on Game 4 as it unfolded in Boston.

Curry pours in 43 as Warriors edge Celtics to level NBA finals at two ... (The Guardian)

Stephen Curry scored 43 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 107-97 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the NBA finals on Friday night.

Williams was listed as questionable coming into the game with the knee injury that kept him out at the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs. Curry’s ankle was an issue coming into the night after Boston’s Al Horford landed on it late in Game 3. The amped-up crowd spent much of the game booing Green, chanting an obscenity at him that is usually reserved for Bucky Dent, and jeering his many misses. “The things he does, we kind of take for granted at times, to go out there and put us on his back. Marcus Smart, who scored 18 points, hit a three-pointer to give the Celtics a 94-90 lead with just over five minutes remaining. Andrew Wiggins had 17 points and 16 boards for the Warriors, who have won at least one road game for 27 consecutive playoff series.

NBA Finals: Warriors' Andrew Wiggins emerges as second star next ... (CBSSports.com)

Wiggins has been Curry's most reliable running mate on both ends of the court throughout the playoffs.

Though it doesn't happen often, Wiggins can reliably come to the rescue with isolation or post-up creation when his team needs him, as he did on this fadeaway in the first quarter of Game 4. This is nothing new for Wiggins, however, who has gone from a disappointing would-be franchise player as a No. 1 overall pick with the Timberwolves to an absolutely elite role player with a Warriors team that sits two wins away from its fourth NBA championship in eight seasons. He needs at least a couple of teammates to come along for the ride -- and if you look up and down the roster, Wiggins is the one who's been sitting shotgun with Curry at the wheel this whole time. It's clear that it's going to take at least two more herculean efforts from Curry if the Warriors are going to beat what looks like, on paper at least, a superior Celtics squad. But every once in a while, when the Warriors' offense collapses and the shot clock runs down, they need someone who can get a bucket. "I just want to win. On the next Warriors possession, Thompson hit a 3-pointer that gave Golden State a lead it wouldn't relinquish. He came crashing in from the weak side with reckless abandon for 13 defensive rebounds, and also came up with three offensive rebounds, none more important than this put-back on Jordan Poole's missed layup with just under five minutes remaining. At plus-20 for the night, he gracefully played Mercutio to Curry's Romeo performance of 43 points and 10 rebounds on 7-for-14 3-point shooting, as the Warriors pulled out a gritty, inspiring 107-97 win to tie the series at 2-2. Tatum is shooting just 50 percent in the restricted area during the Finals, compared to 68 percent in the regular season. After an 8-for-23 performance in Game 4, Tatum is now averaging 22.3 points in the Finals on 34 percent shooting. Stephen Curry, we knew, would bring it on a nightly basis, and he's exceeded expectations against the Boston Celtics so far with masterpiece after masterpiece.

The Celtics looked more composed speed and pace wise, particularly in the first half, but were prone to turnovers. But as a three-time NBA champion coach, Kerr has been in difficult situations before and he backed his judgement by making big calls at the right times. It worked as the Warriors fought from behind to take the lead and never relinquished it. The Warriors had various aspects they were looking to improve on coming in and they ticked every box. But Boston, despite some big plays from that pair and from Robert Williams III on the defensive end, did not have enough. Andrew Wiggins pulled down the most boards of his career, 16 of them, to go with 17 points.

2022 NBA Finals: Stephen Curry, Warriors played the hits in Game 4 ... (CBSSports.com)

Nothing is easy against the Celtics, but a legendary Curry Flurry kept Golden State alive.

Curry said that, even though Golden State had a poor start offensively, the tone of the game was completely different from the previous one: "It wasn't a perfect first quarter, but we gave ourselves enough life." There were also Games 2 and 5 of the Finals, both in Toronto, both narrow, gutsy victories against an opponent that was ahead in the series and pulling out every defensive trick in the book. The Celtics' defense blends the best attributes of those Rockets (switchability) and those Raptors (intelligence). It has pushed Kerr to an uncomfortable place, where every lineup decision is a bet on Golden State either circumventing a spacing issue or scrounging up just enough stops to survive. That was its first experience on this stage, and it was down 2-1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers before it won three straight. Looney's layup turned a one-possession game into a two-possession game, and it deflated a crowd that was ready to explode. "The heart on that man is incredible," Thompson said.

Inside The Box Score: 2022 NBA Finals, Game 4 (NBA.com)

Take a closer look at Golden State's 107-97 win over Boston in Game 4 to tie the Finals at 2-2 with a deep dive into all aspects of the box score.

• In each of the first three games of the Finals, Marcus Smart was matched up with Stephen Curry for the most minutes of any Celtic, followed by Derrick White each time. • Stephen Curry shot the ball better when he was contested (9-for-14, 64.3%) than when he was left uncontested (5-for-12, 41.7%) in Game 4. • Boston doubled up the Warriors on box outs in Game 4, 12-6. • The teams tied in loose balls recovered as every 50-50 ball is critical in the Finals. No play may have demonstrated that more than Jayson Tatum’s dive and slide across the sidelines to try to save a ball from going out of bounds. • No player was on the move more than Klay Thompson in Game 4 as he traveled just under three miles on the court with a game-high 2.97 miles. In Game 4, the Warriors had 14 screen assists for 38 points – the top two marks of the series. • The Warriors assisted on only half of their made field goals in Game 4, which is not only their lowest assist percentage of the Finals, but is also their lowest mark of the entire postseason. • Boston has finished with a higher free throw rate in three of the four games in this series. He not only made the same number of 2s and 3s, he was also assisted at the same rate on both shot types (42.9%). • The first three games of the series featured only 11 total seconds of clutch time – score within five points in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime – and that came in Game 1, when Al Horford made a 3-pointer with 4:49 to play in the game to put Boston up by six. Boston’s Jaylen Brown led all players with 12 points in the paint, while Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 10, followed by Andrew Wiggins at eight. • In Boston’s two wins in this series, it has shot 50.6% (Game 1) and 48.3% (Game 3) as a team, respectively.

Warriors show Celtics how hard it is to win an NBA title: 'It's not going ... (USA TODAY)

The Boston Celtics had a chance to seize control of the NBA Finals in Game 4 at home but couldn't close out the Golden State Warriors.

Up 3-2 against Miami in the conference semifinals, Boston failed to finish the series at home in six games and had to win Game 7 on the road. Miami is a team that we went and did it against. But Boston didn’t cough up Game 4 as much as Golden State won it with offensive and defensive execution in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Celtics played in back-and-forth series ever since sweeping Brooklyn in the first round. It's a championship-caliber opponent that's not going to lay down. Golden State forced missed shots and turnovers and was 5-for-7 from the field with two big 3s from Curry and Thompson. Golden State coach Steve Kerr made the right substitutions, even sitting Draymond Green during a key stretch, and Curry, Thompson, Green and Andrew Wiggins made winning plays. “As much as we'd like to do better on our own, you've got to give them credit for how they stepped up defensively. “We had our chances … It's not only solely dependent on one team. Curry had a game-high 43 points on Friday – the second-highest scoring output of his Finals career. I think that's kind of the beauty of it, that it's not going to be easy. It shouldn't be'

NBA Finals MVP Ladder: Stephen Curry vaults to No. 1 with electric ... (NBA.com)

Could it be anyone else? Golden State's sharpshooter goes off for 43 points and seven 3-pointers to continue his torrid Finals.

In Game 4, his 13 defensive rebounds helped the Warriors limit the Celtics to 12 second-chance points, compared to his own team’s 19. Thompson and Curry (18 points) nearly outscored the entire Celtics roster (19 points) in the fourth quarter as they combined to hit 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep. Thompson joined Curry and Green in winning 19 career NBA Finals contests to match San Antonio’s Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili for the most Finals victories by any trio over the last 50 seasons. But of course, we’ve still got to let this play out on the court as we step back into the thick of this dogfight of an NBA Finals on Monday at Chase Center. In the second half of the first four games, Tatum is minus-19 while averaging 8.3 points on 26.5% from the floor and 21.4% from 3-point range. Usually aggressive, Brown took his first shot of the night with 7:31 left in the opening quarter and finished with just two points before scoring 10 in the second quarter. In Game 3, Boston crushed the Warriors on the boards (47-31) with the forward producing just seven rebounds in a 116-100 loss. In doing so, he became the first Golden State Warrior since Nate Thurmond in 1967 to finish with at least 17 points and 16 rebounds in an NBA Finals contest. “Wiggs has done what he’s done all playoffs: make it tough for the opposing starter to score” Warriors forward Draymond Green said. “I just know last game they had outrebounded us and got all the offensive rebounds,” he said. That just carried over into a 14-point third quarter, then an uber-efficient final frame as Golden State embarked on a 17-3 run over the final five minutes. “To go against Boston, you’ve got to deal with Tatum and Brown, and they are just powerful, skilled players.

When a coach takes a gamble in NBA Finals, it's often a matter of trust (The Athletic)

Draymond Green was removed from the game for Kevon Looney, who was playing great. Green was struggling again, just as he had in Game 3.

So if he has to ride a hot hand — and Looney was terrific in the second half — he can make major withdrawals from that bank of institutional memory. The Warriors rallied in a must-win because Curry was otherworldly, with 43 points and 10 boards, and because he had lots of help — from Andrew Wiggins (17 points, 16 rebounds), Klay Thompson (18 points) and Looney, who had 11 rebounds in 28 minutes. Kerr would have gotten withering criticism as well for taking Green out, as poorly as he played, had Golden State not won and tied the series at 2-2. Loon went in there, dominated the paint, got us some big rebounds, created a presence. “It’s not just your physical abilities; it’s the high-IQ teams that are able to make adjustments.” It worked and Milwaukee pulled out a series-tying win, the catalyst for the Bucks’ ultimate six-game victory. Down the stretch, Green made a couple of monster plays — a short-roll bounce pass to Looney for a layup and a pristine dime to Curry for a dagger 3-pointer with 1:42 remaining. Boston was closing in on a 3-1 lead, which would put them a game from their franchise’s 18th title, and the Warriors were in deep trouble. He came back in and made huge plays down the stretch, finishes the game with four steals, eight assists, nine boards. But it’s still a huge roll of the dice. A hundred games, eight months together, and often, a coach has to make a big decision, in real time, that can galvanize a team toward a huge win, or splinter it into a dozen pieces. BOSTON — Game 4 of an NBA Finals is, often, the championship series’ fulcrum.
